  ‘British officials stripped me’

British immigration officials are alleged to have subjected some Nigerian women to dehumanising treatment, stripping them in the guise of security screening.

The women, our correspondent learnt on Monday, were among passengers on Emirates flight EK 0015 to London on August 5, this year.

The flight left Lagos on August 5, made a stopover in Dubai and arrived Gatwick on August 6.

But after the passengers disembarked, some female immigration officials randomly picked some Nigerian women and ordered them into a room where they were reportedly stripped.

One of the affected passengers who narrated her ordeal to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, for fear that she might be stigmatised, said she and her colleagues were compelled to take off their clothes and underwear while the officials used security gadgets to frisk them.

She said, “Immediately we were taken into the room, we were compelled to take off our clothes. We protested but they threatened to deport us if we failed to co-operate.

“But they were not even satisfied with that. They ordered us to also remove our undies and brassieres. They then started to frisk our private parts and breasts with security equipment.

“I wept profusely but the officials were unmoved. They said they wanted to be sure that we did not conceal hard drugs in our bodies.

“At a point, one of them knelt down, asked me to open my legs wide while she looked deep into my private part. It was dehumanising and I felt as if I was raped. I felt ashamed as I dressed up and left the room. I regretted the trip.”

The woman, who is her 30s and married with children, said she and the other women were later released after nothing incriminating was found on them.

When contacted on the matter on Monday, an official of the Public Affairs section of the British High Commission in Nigeria, Mr. Dele Oladokun, promised to reach the relevant officials and then get back to our correspondent.

The facts of the story are incorrect. UK Immigration Officers DO NOT HAVE ANY POWERS to strip down any passenger on the pretext of searching for hard drugs, that power is conferred on the HMI Revenue & Customs Officer.

There is nothing wrong in being asked to subject oneself for further examination if there is 'reason' to believe that a passenger is a drug facilitator.

Jamaican passengers are being stripped every day at the airport,it is not a big issue.

Nigerian passengers are the second highest drug traffickers into UK, so they will be targeted if the finger of suspicion is pointing at them (based on intelligence/ tip-off's).

Nigerian Immigration Officers do also strip Nigerians arriving into Nigeria if they have reason to believe that a passenger is a drug courier.

Most tip-off's to UK Immigration about Nigerian passengers carrying drugs to UK are done by Nigerian Immigration/Customs officials (they can make deliberate wrong tip-off's to innocent passengers).

They do the same thing on this end. They can select you at random and search you. Nothing illegal there at all. Considering Nigerians reputation for drug trafficking, it not surprising that we are more likely to be selected. Until our folks stop giving us bad name all over the world, we will be subject to this kind of behavior. A lot of us Nigerians, even as US citizens, are sometimes subject to further scrutiny, questions, whenever we are returning to the US from Nigeria. It has never happened when I am returning from another country.

The only iffy part of this story is the fact that Customs Officials was mistakenly interspersed for Immigration Officials. Not only do they have the right to ask you to spread your legs wide, they are also well within their rights to shove their arm up your arse if they wish.

IT IS CALLED CAVITY SEARCH, If you don't want to be subjected to such, they have the right to put you on the next plane back to wherever you are coming from.

To those who think these things do not happen, open your eyes. The only reason it does not happen frequently to Nigerians is because any plane flying to UK from Jamaica is surrounded by dogs, whilst the plane coming from Nigeria is surrounded by immigration officials. Go figure.

It was SAD last month to see what was fished from a woman's vagina at Heathrow. This checks are very vital.
