i made a healthy assumption and it was not abusive in any way. I don't see why u should take offence and call me a market woman. I simply inferred that you got bored and probably didnt think deeply about the topic before putting it up. I see nothing wrong with that. You should prove your "deep thoughts" rather than call me a market woman. Am not offended though. TO lioness I told you before be civil in you approach, don't use abusive words, stop this market women style of approach, lets have a healthy argument here.

you have said it yourself. Ethnicity is what your born into. I am born into Ikwerre and thats it. I see that you'D prefer people agree with you or u see them as abusive. So am going to live your thread. TO lioness LGA's are created but ethnicity is something you are born into, or to some extent a natural thing.

NINETOFIVE Am surprised you take offence at a post. Below is your reply on Zahymaka's post. you Directly/indirectly told him he was talking trash, calling him a traitor and telling people they had no ethnicity and they were confused. But i guess you didnt think that was abusive. Who conferred it on you , why have you refused to make any sense, are you listening to yourself, you came on this thread and introduced yourself as a Delta Ibo. You see am just seek and tired of having traitors {Note: very very few traitors, not generalizing } around me, please show me your ethnic group and your Ukwani language on the map below. people are laughing at very few people like you . are you confused?. Nkwerre is a town in abia state Is not a very good comparison because your Ukwani language is just the same as Uguta language in Abia state, try to find out.

Hello Eddy tells how are you doing today. Hello NINETOFIVE, i understand where your coming from but i don't honestly think you'll make any head way. Alot of past historians have argued this and even brought more than just Maps to prove it but at each time, there has been a counter map and historical background that has proved them wrong.
How can you say obvious tribes that stand alone should agree that they are igbos when even the igbo's feel that not all of them are truely igbo's. I asked my flate mate who is anambra and he said they are the true igbo's his words "core heart of igbo" and he said the abia's are just outsketch of igbo. Even at marriage time, the igbo's select even within themselves.
So i really don't see you making any head way with this.
don't get me wrong, If like you said a lot of historians has been wrong on this same topic then a concession would have been reached and it would have appeared on the map, I don't see anything distinct or obvious about the language of the IBO's people in Delta state that makes it a different language, come alive bro. every town in IBO land has slightly different dialectical Intonation [ try to find out you 'ill be surprised, is larger than life ] and thats what we have in Delta and Ikwerre. Am from Anambra and I don't consider my self more IBO than any IBO person, IBO is IBO, Your flat mate is part of the problem and this thread deals with all that. check where delta or Ikwerre is in the map you will see is just one block of land with the rest of IBO land, and I don't mean any harm in bringing up this topic is just to foster unity among our people. They have the same dialectical differences in Yoruba land but non of them claim they are not Yoruba's because of that, for example a typical Yoruba person can not possibly understand 40% of Akoko language or Ekiti language in Ondo state if he or she is not used to it.

It is a shame some people are too lazy to research their own origin or ashamed of it. Lioness and every Ikwerre person should read this link below. By the way Hausa and Fufulde(the fulani language)are totally different, someone ignorantly said they were similar. The Igbos lost the Biafran war so the Ikwere people say they are no longer Igbos. And to the "delta ibo"Major Ifeajuna who gave his life for Biafra must be rolling over in his grave when he hears your ignorant utterances. As Igbos would say, after the race,we'll calculate the mileage. http://nigeriaworld.com/articles/2006/jun/221.html

Hey ya'll give NINETOFIVE a break. I think it's a valid question. @ Zahymaka & LionessCan Ikwerre and/or "Delta Ibo" people understand Igbo? What are the basic (greetings) words? The word for water? I'm honestly asking because I don't know. This is a question that's been burning a hole in my head for a long time too. So if ya'll - or anyone else - could calmly explain the thought process behind it then I'D appreciate it. What do the elders say? Was there a time when ya'll were Igbo? My own opinoin: I've previously believed that Deltan Igbos & Ikwere were Igbo. Though I'm yet to confirm this, I think that the schism came about either during the (time period of the) Arochukwu Confederacy - when other Igbo villages were chaffing under Arochukwu "control" - and/or during or after the Biafran War. Maybe their Council of Elders feel out w/ the majority or something. Another thought: anyone who knows Igbo people knows how independent, individualistic, and goal oriented we are. Even w/ the elders and tradition rearing its lovely head, a man still must prove himself. Along with that, Igbo people make distinctions among themselves. Long story short: back in the day a man didn't say "I'm Igbo, be nice to me, let me trade w/ you" but more like "I'm Ikwerre" or Nnewi or whatever and "I'm here to prove myself" blah blah blah. I think the difference is that some people never got "used" to calling themselves Igbo. (It's relatively recent that we call ourselves Igbo - I think my old Mum's just getting used to it. But really as a kid besides saying "IGBO KWENU" when never talked about "Igbo this" or "Igbo that" but rather "Ihechiyenwa".) What I'm trying to say is that calling oneself "Ikwerre" rather than "Igbo" might be the most Igbo thing to do!

Alright, just to play devil's advocate, I think that it's possible that people were mistakenly misnamed by "outsiders" whether Africans or not. Secondly, I don't think saying "I'm not an Igbo" is an insult. It's simply a correction. Thirdly, people (mainly outsiders & doomsayers) use "I'm not an Igbo" or "fake Igbo" as an insult either to Igbo people or those "non-Igbo" people in question. Those people are just trying to breed dissension and we - all Nigerians sha - should shun those people! They don't have anyone's interest at heart not even their own. Fourthly, (as an example of Thirdly ) I've only ever heard someone call others "fake Igbo" when they themselves were not even Igbo! When I asked "Who are you to determine fake or real" both persons stammered "My mum" or "My grandmum is Igbo". . .so being a self-identified non-Igbo means you can run your mouth? Anyhow, we should all stand guard against those people. They want to make people feel less than they are. Lastly, I do not think that Fulani and Hausa languages sound alike. Also Ibibio sounds like Efik b/c the peoples are related. So will you (anyone) admit that "Deltan Igbos" and/or "Ikwerre" are related to ndi Igbo or no?

@ babyosisi,
You shdnt call people's post ignorant uterrances. There isnt any reason to be rude just because a delta man says he isnt Igbo or because an Ikwerre girl say's she isnt igbo. The fact that several tribes fought for the same course doesnt make them one tribe.
When you come to think of it, The ikwerre language differs alot. You may not know this but an isiokpo man speaks differently from an akpor, phalga or etche man. No matter what the origin you claim to know, if Lioness's LGA doesnt fall under an Igbo State, you can't say she's igbo. If you read my previous post, you will see that i clearly stated that may articles and historians have commented about this. The fact that your link was on the internet or anything doesnt neccessarily make your article true.

@Eddytells The Ikwerre igbo differs from Etche the same way Ekiti differs from Oyo yet they are both Yorubas. Kwara is mainly Yoruba though geographically they are regarded as northern Nigeria.
Have you heard Ikwerre names before? They are all Elechi,Chioma,Ngozi,Onyinye,Chukwuma,Okoro,Core Igbo names with the exact same Igbo meanings. I am from Umuahia and does not understand a word an Afikpo man says and yet I don't claim umuahia as an ethnic origin while the other claims Afikpo. The link I gave clearly shows you the distribution of the Igbos, believe it or reject it,some Ikwerre elders know the truth and have told the lie so much that they have now believed it. I grew up in PH,most Ikwerre people know their history, why they deny it beats me.
please show me a link about the origin of Ikwerre.

The Igbo today After the Nigerian Civil War, Igboland had been severely devastated. Many hospitals, schools, and homes had been completely destroyed in the brutal war. The Federal government of Nigeria denied the Igbo people access to all the hard currencies such as pound sterling they had saved in Nigeria banks before the civil war, and only allowed them a minuscule compensation of £20 per adult. For example, a man who had over £450,000.00 savings could only receive £20.00 following this policy.
In addition to the loss of their savings, many Igbo people found themselves discriminated against by other ethnic groups and the new non-Igbo federal government. Due to the discrimination of employers, many Igbos had trouble finding employment, and the Igbos became one of the poorest ethnic groups in Nigeria during the early 1970s. As an even greater insult, in Port Harcourt, their control was handed over to their Ijaw neighbours and the Ikwerre (an Igbo subgroup who have separated and claimed no Igbo origin). Igboland was gradually rebuilt over a period of twenty years and the economy was again prospering due to the rise of the Niger Delta petroleum industry, which led to new factories being set up in southern Nigeria. This recovery, from the depths of the Biafran War, is an example of the uncanny resilience and resourcefulness of the Igbo. Many Igbos eventually regained government positions.
The Igbo, however, also face many problems and challenges today. Even today, Igbo people have sometimes continued to face discrimination from other ethnic groups. Igboland towns, such as Enugu, Onitsha and Owerri, lack sufficient resources and good infrastructure for their inhabitants. Also, because the traditional Igbo homeland was becoming too small for its growing population, many Igbo have emigrated out of Igboland.
This is an excerpt from wikipedia, full story in the link I sent earlier, draw your own conclusions. I'm done with the topic.

I disagree with this point. For one, Lioness disputed the factualness of the map so should we still use it as evidence either way? Secondly, a location does not necessarily change the culture/language. Please re-read Babyosisi's Afikpo/Umuahia reference. True talk, Babyosisi. Your last two posts were excellent!

@EddyTells Babyosisi is right. People from Anambra and Enugu do not hear a word of what people from Ohafia, Abriba, Item Alai, mostly from Abia state and so on speak. Does that mean that the ibos in Abia are diffrent from those in Anambra and Enugu? NO
Dialects are different and they all don't talk the same way. They are still the same ethnic group.

Now isn't it ironic that the same Ijaws who helped them deny their Igbo heritage and become "Rivers"because of the ill treatment Igbos got after the war(which is still ongoing)now throws his Igbonness in his face at a time he probably needed the support of his SS people.

I agree with you, I have a Delta friend, he sees himself as a tipical IBO MAN and that's the way I see him too, he is even pro BIAFRA than anybody else, he is an IBO brother, this disease called ignorance is not really affecting everybody in Delta or Ikwere, I once hard an Ikwerre freind that speaks IBO just like me or any IBO person, he even once gave me something of a very high value to keep for him because he sees me as an IBO Brother, am surprised why some of these people claim they are not IBOS.

@ NINETOFIVE, I think the problem with Igbos as a people is individualism. How else can you explain a lot of Igbos getting into the Army with Northern names back in the 1950s and 60s?
On the average, we tend to look more towards the success of the individual than the success of the collective. It has always been so and if you read through Things Fall Apart, you will see that it has been so since time immemorial. . .
The British had to reinstate Ovonmwaren's son because no Bini man agreed to rule as Oba while the rightful heir was alive. In Igboland, they managed to get a lot of warrant chiefs installed!
On a more bizarre and personal note, a colleague of mine here at my office whose name is Onyekachi would rather die than accept that she's Igbo. She comes from Benue State (I saw her CV), but I don't know the name of her hometown. I assume it must be one of those border towns less than 20km from Nsukka. One day I was speaking Igbo with another colleague of mine (a conversation about oto ndi umu nwanyi), and from her reaction, she understood everything. Her surname (which I wouldn't divulge here) is also very Igbo, but then I digress. . .
Our own arrogance as a people also drives this seeming disunity. As a student back in UNIBEN, I know of Delta indigenes who were refused Ohaneze membership because they aren't authentic Igbo.
In politics we tend to be the ones who mess ourselves up.
I would be pleasantly surprised if the entire Igbo sub nation can produce just one person to run for president of Nigeria next year, but I sincerely doubt that this would happen. Our track record so far since 1999 heavily points otherwise. . .
