Unless you have a mobile provider that doesn't charge for text messages, it will be fairly impossible for anyone to offer such a service without eventually going bankrupt!
Instead of looking for free mobile text alerts, why not just activate a WAP over GPRS service (Glo Direct, MTN Sights and Sounds, etc) on your phone and use it to browse news sites daily?

Or better still, subscribe for their newsletters at various news sites, using your Yahoo! email. Then you can check your Yahoo! email on your GPRS-enabled phone at anytime using either Glo or MTN GPRS>
