Harare - The speed with which Zimbabweans took back their land from white farmers is "commendable" and Namibia wants to do the same, Namibia's deputy land minister was quoted as saying on Tuesday. "We feel that the speed they took the land is commendable and we would like to see how they did it," said Isak Katali, who is on a visit to Zimbabwe, according to the state-owned Herald newspaper. Zimbabwe launched its controversial land-reform programme in 2000, and now most of the country's 4 000 formerly white-owned farms are in the hands of black farmers. The programme has sparked Western criticism but won Zimbabwe the praise and admiration of other countries in southern Africa. 'We feel that the same colonisers are the same people who colonised Zimbabwe' "Land reform is important to Namibia and we feel that the same colonisers are the same people who colonised Zimbabwe," Katali said. "We also feel that if Zimbabwe did this we can do it in the same manner," he added. - Sapa-DPA http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=68&art_id=vn20060524020310823C141643

You think it makes sense to give farm land to people who have no knowledge of farming? Destroying the economy in the process? wouldn't it be better to emulate South Africa's land reform programme which did not result in destroying the economy?

You have got to be kidding. How can you call such a vile bigoted figure inspirational? Should he be propped up because he's black and stood up against whites, even if it means destroying the livelyhood of thousands of his (black) citizens?

I hope some of us bother to keep current with the News. Mugabe an inspiration in deed 1]Zimbabwe has the world highest inflation rate for a country not at war 2]It cost as much as 50,000 Zimbabwean dollars to buy a loaf of bread 3]Zimbawe's economy is in a terrible mess and has reach failure state 4]A country that was once one of the most prosperous countries in Africa and whose economic mainstay was agriculture is now suffering from food shortage 5]There is serious health problem in zimbabwe When I was in primary school around the eighties and up to my secondary school in the ninties I saw Zimbabwe as a country to emigrate to because it had a glowing economy Then Mugabe had a rush of political madness called "taking the land back from the colonisers" ,actually a political gimmick, and in less than five years Zimbabwe had become a failed state with the majority of the populace in abject poverty. Life is worse in Zimbabawe than in Nigeria. Many, many times worse. And this is the country and president Namibia wants to learn from and imitate. Welcome to the next failed state in Africa [NAMIBIA]This black africans have a curse on them otherwise why do they keep doing stupid things to themselves ? Somtimees it is such a big shame and always a stigma to be Black African because we are never able to take care of ourselves but the little we have we love to destroy for selfish and self centered reasons.

Nah they will blame Zimbabwe's problems on western nations instead of accepting responsibility. And day after day we wonder why we are so backward compared to other continents.
I mean for someone to call mugagbe an inspiration? Wow, maybe we (black africans) are subhuman indeed.

Slavery is easy, being a freeman is hard.
I am sure that slaves would benefit too from having their food and clothes and housing provided.
As sure as I am that ex-slaves would benefit more from having to struggle as freemen to provide for themselves.

Whites died at a rate of 50 percent when coming to explore Africa.
Yet their countries and people considered this an acceptable loss because they knew what the end reward was.
When some say: "Let us keep what we have stolen, because if you do not, then we are going to make it as painful as possible for you by putting sanctions on you and undermining your economy at every turn."
This is not an acceptable argument.
It is beyond belief that some would in the 21st century be encouraging Africans to keep the same system of whites owning all the good land in Africa because it hurts to readjust ones economy.
You got to crawl before you can walk.

no one is saying that we have to maintain the same system of whites owning 90% of arable land, all I am saying is that returning land to the rightful owners can be achieved in a more organised and civilised manner so as not to destroy the economy. South Africa is a good example of this.

New,
Mugabe had already agreed to hold off on taking the land for a decade during which time the British were supposed to buy off the white farmers.
The British claimed Mugabe was stealing some of the money and so stopped making payments. They said that they could not figure out who to pay at that point.
The white farmers kept insisting on getting outrageous prices before they would sell.
It could have been done better but it would have to have been done with different players apparently.
Cause nobody in the situtation seems to have acted right.
You can't blame only Mugabe. And you also can not insist that because of problems, the whites should have retained the land until everything was absolutely perfect.
It's never going to be perfect.

Quote From JOHANNESBURG - Civil society in South Africa has told government that the pace of land reform in the country needs to be speeded up. 'In this regard, an approach pioneered in Brazil could serve as a model for South Africa. Under the Brazilian initiative, unused farmland is expropriated, then subdivided into family-owned units with land and production costs financed by subsidised loans. The system exists parallel to a commercial land sector regulated by market forces.' Just another civilised example. No one gets killed and the economy maintains its growth
I agree its never going to be perfect and you can't please everyone. Lets stop laying blame. You can't say because the British government backed out of the original deal, Mugabe is right in destroying his country's economy?

as far as the south african example, you need to ask the blacks there if the slow pace is working for them. it isnt.

For saying that, I wish you were one of those pawns whose lives sacrificed on the altar of Mugabe's "inspiration". What I don't understand is why followers of tyrants like Mugabe won't ask him to sacrifice his own family first. People are so stupid. A thief is making stupid decisions that are killing people and you are supporting him.

I will be surprised if all this people attacking Drusilla on this thread are not inpostors, all those farmers should have paid for all the years they 've been farming illegally on those land, Drusilla is very right in saying that you have to crawl before you walk, if Africans would not stand up today they would always live to be threatened with western sanctions, Africans always think that one day every thing would be alright, the west would make every thing alright, let me tell you this today, if we black people would not change our way of thinking and believe in our selves, we can't survive. Mugabe was right in taking back the land and Namibia should do the same with immediate effect and make them pay too, If any body would disagree with me I wont be bothered.

Mariory,
If the Nigerian and Zimbabwe governments agree to give me ownership of the land which is unused. I would locate to Zimbabwe or Nigeria.
In Nigeria, they say a large percentage of the land is unused and in Zimbabwe 60 percent of the land that he has given back to the people is unoccupied. (this is why pushing people out of the cities and their shanti towns was necessary -- he is forcing them to reorganize their economies to serve the people and not just foreigners who might come and buy some trinket in the market. China did the same thing to realign their economy and nobody is complaining 50 years later.)
Better Zimbabwe, I think they keep the lights on more.

I hope you realise that the "village/peasant" Chinese farmers are complaining. There are documented cases of farm riots supressed by force. The Chinese system is kept alive by movement and residential restrictions. The farmers are not all on their farms willingly simply because the benefits of China's economic growth are not leaving the cities. The fact remains that if the Zimbabweans allocated the farms wanted to farm and could live satisfactorily off the land they would not need to be forced. I'm guessing changing the constitution and sitting tight at the age of 80 was also necessary to reorganize the economy.

mochafella,
The fact remains that if Zimbabweans had not been forced off the land in the first place, we would not be in this situtation today.
I wonder if we will have films coming out showing Mugabe doing what Jerry Rawlings had to do in Ghana to change their economy back to a normal one?
Jerry Rawlings actually went out to the farms and taught the people how to farm in a systematic way. I watched a film of him doing this.
You got to crawl before you walk.

They should upon up all their land and resources to the west and let western corporations and mega corporate farm bussinesses take over the countries economy and resources. Afterall we barbaric Africans are too stupid to raise ourselves and feed ourselves, we need the aid and technology of the west, I mean before colonial rule and western imperialism we where dying by the millions and starving and committing genocides and colonialism changed all that. Infact if we where still under colonial rule we would not have all the problems we have now, sub-saharan Africans need to be spoon fed as they are totally incompetent at self government and sustenance.
Look at how Shell and other multinational corporations are developing the great country of Nigeria, I mean compared to Ghana with no oil our people are living like Kings and are not in want or need of any basic amenities or utilities, that is why we have such few Nigerians in western countries compared to other Africans, just look as the US, Nigerians are the smallest group of Africans due to the success in our mother country.
Infact what we need in Nigeria to further out economy is to sell off more land to multinational white owned corporations, it will ensure our citizens are even better fed and have more choices and products at the cheap than we currently have, we need to kick out all the villagers sitting on fertile land and make way for ConAgra.

Your statement of low self esteem makes me to want BIAFRA to secede from Nigeria the more, Because the IBO NATION are the only African nation that has Indigenous technology, so that after we must have used our technology to build our place, we would re colonize all of you and possibly transfer some of the technology to you people, we can relate as Africans but staying in Nigeria you are bringing us back, and our talents are wasting.
