Hi Guys?
I recently found out that there is a huge shortage of Certified Internal Auditors (CIAs) here and I am considering registering for; and writing the exams to become certified. I just want to know what the propspects are in Naija. (As you know: 'Ile l'abo isinmi oko'
Do we perhaps have any CIA (in Nigeria) on Nairaland? Is there IIA in Nigeria?
P.S. The IIA (Institute of Internal Auditors) administers the certification.

The issue of whether the IIA exists in Naija is also of keen interest to me. I am also in the practise but not sure of the prospects in naija myself! Does anyone know? I have done some online searches and there seems to be more mention of ACCA!

@ poster. Nice 1.
CIA's are not really much in Naija, but U'll find a couple of them in KPMG as it is encouraged to become a CIA in the Internal Audit Unit. If U're interested, do it as I have seen an advert where NLNG requested for either ICAN, ACCA or CIA. U know Nigerians now, as soon as dey see the value, evrybody go begin write am.
Though, ACA is in vogue 4 now, i think CIA will take centre stage soon 4 Internal Auditors especially as Internal Controls, Corporate Governance and Risk Management is becoming better embraced by Naija companies. All d best

Hi guys, I have been an Internal Auditor for 9 years and a Member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) since 2007. so YES there are IIA's in Nigeria. I will be starting the CIA exams this year. CIA has an edge over ICAN ACA ACCA and the rest. As Auditors we know this. and some companies have started demanding for it here in Nigeria. So there is a big prospect for CIA. I will be one soon and u can get in touch with me if u are interested, ocube3@yahoo.com or 08035889911 cheers

Of course there are CIAs in Nigeria. Quite many I believe. Not so many when compared to the number of ACAs though. I worked in a Big 4 in Nigeria which had a large specialist audit unit providing internal audit services. Every member of the unit were required to be CIA in addition to being ACCA or ACA. While you're working on your CIA, I'll want to believe you also have audit experience because it’s your level of professional experience that actually sets you apart. It might be difficult to pass audit interviews (unless it is for entry level auditors) without the right experience, your certification notwithstanding. You’ll do very well if you have other relevant qualifications (ACA, ACCA, CPA, CISA, etc) in addition to your CIA. I quite agree with you. For the avoidance of doubt, CIA is not superior to those qualifications you mentioned as each one of them have their unique objectives and are designed to be complementary and not to compete.

Thanks Avenir, but can u advice me on one tin? I want to write my CIA exams soon then i tot of the ACCA Exams too but i feel ACCA takes more time to complete all 14 papers onlike the CIA exams with just 4 stage. so if u were in my shoes, which would u pick as an Auditor with 9 years job experience.

I'm sorry for not replying to this before now. I have just seen it. To answer your question, I'll do both exams concurrently if finance and time are not going to be problems. There is a great deal of overlap between the curriculums. It is like using one stone to kill two birds. In terms of choosing between the two qualifications, I don't know what line of auditing you're into but the norm is that a financial auditor has to also be a chattered member of a professional accountancy organisation. ACCA requires more sacrifices and resources but it is more rewarding if you must choose between the two qualifications. You cannot escape ACCA or ACA if you want to be taken seriously as a financial auditor. CIA will give you added advantage but it is definitely not a substitute for ACCA or ACA.
