Multicellularity: Plants and the transition to land
« #32 on: October 15, 2008, 05:52 AM »

algae and land plants are both green plants. First multicellular organisms to live on land were land plants.
ecosystem- all the organisms in a particular area with physical components of the land. plants produce oxygen. Plants build soil, plants hold soil by roots that hold particles in place. Plants hold water: when the tissues take up and retain water. Plants moderate local climate by providing shade and reducing temperature and land from drying out.  Plants provide food for herbivores and omnivore. Plants take CO2 from the atmosphere and make sugars with it. Using plant trees for fuel and coal and building furniture and paper.

Bioprospecting or chemical prospecting are using plants for such things as drugs, fragrances, insecticides or fungicides. Many of the plant molecules we use for medicine is actually used for defending against enemies.

Nonvascular plants- liverworts, hornworts and mosses don't have vascular tissues.

Seedless vascular plants- have well developed vascular tissues but no seeds e.g of such are horsetails, ferns, lycophytes and whisk ferns.

Seed plants are plants with seed- embryo and a store of nutritive tissue- and vascular tissues.

The transition to land

light is reduced in water as waters absorb and reflect light.
preventing water loss with Cuticle and stomata. cuticle is a waxy, watertight sealant that covers the plants and prevents dessication. WHen guard cells soften the stomaa is closed. When guard cells become tout they open to allow O2 out and CO2 to diffuse into interior of cell.

Water transportation: Vascular tissue and growth upright. erect growth was possible due to the evolution of water- conducting cells that contained lignin and strengthened stems.

Gametophytes produce gametes by mitosis.
Two gametes unite to form diploid zygote.
The zygote develops into a multicellular, diploid

Plants moving to land caused some problems, they wanted gaseous exchange but not desiccation therefore they employed stomata and waxy cuticle. Plants use vascular tissues to transport water up to different tissues. For plants to enhance their chances of getting water they became erect with the help of cellulose and leginin deposits in tracheids. They are able to reproduce in the absence of H2O by producing pollens that can be transported with the help of animals and wind. They also produce seeds to protect their embryos.

all plants are photosynthetic ( autotroph)- use sunlight to make food
they all chlorophyll a and b
have embryos protected by parent's tissues
are multicellular and eukaryotic
store carbohydrates as starch
