XYZ: Hello Davidylan, this is XYZ from Nairaland.com
Davidylan: hi
XYZ: hello
5 minutes wait,

XYZ: asl please
Davidylan: please introduce yourself first
XYZ: XYZ from nairaland.com
Davidylan: are you new? i've never seen your Nairaland id before.
XYZ: yes i'm new
XYZ: Buzz
XYZ: talk to me
XYZ: Buzz
*Davidylan sets YIM to invisible*

Am i the only one who is constantly peppered with this kind of desperate girls who don't seem to have anything to say beyond "hello this is ABC from nairaland" or "will you be my friend?".
I sometimes wonder why people still havent learnt the basic skill in human relations. If you initiate a conversation, the onus lies on you to carry that conversation at least until you can convince the other individual why you deserve a piece of his precious time. don't say hi and then start buzzing and telling me to talk to you because i just can't! i don't know you and i did not start my day planning to talk to you!

@Daviddylan

It is the Yankee Factor. I get females call my phone from Nigeria and tell me they got my number from a friend and that they want to be my friend. OK then here comes the daily flashes from Nigeria. When i call them back after the tenth flash, i say hello and ask why all the flashes? "Oh i Just wanted to hear your voice". Is it me or are these chics just desperate?

Oh my God! I get that A LOT! I've blocked and deleted more than 20. I'm practically always invisible. It's so annoying. It's always like:

- Asl?

Whenever I see that, I block and delete immediately.

Rhodalyn and I used to get that all the time Angry Damn annoying, til we decided to play them at their own game.

Everytime they type asl? we would reply, asl?

Everytime I got - hello this is bla bla bla from Nairaland.com, I'D reply with, hello this is 2cantango from Nairaland.com Grin

Pisses them right off! Grin

Some of them would argue with crap like - but I asked you first - big babies.

I've since removed my messenger id from my profile - just like j-girl said, if they want to contact me, they can approach me here first. Cool

I'll agree with you, Badman, I've made quite a number of friends through that. And I always keep myself ''invisible''

Nope David, u are not the only one, and its mostly newbies. There's always a learning curve.

Have no fear, u are under no obligation to carry on the conversation. If they started the convo they are responsible for piquing your interest.

First i welcomed all sorts to say hi, then after annoying hrs where colleagues had to tell me to stop the constant YIM pinging i started setting my YIM invisible, then i lost a lot of valuable opportunities to talk to friends and now i'm back to the constant pinging again with annoying nitwits!
I met a great person via that method though lol she knows herself!!!  Grin

Well, what I normally do is to study the line of thought or the pattern of my would be friend discussion. I also take time to go through the person's profile. If it's filled with smileys and things like that, I quickly back off. But if it's filled with interesting write ups and constrictive arguments, then, I can connect. That's how I got Chinani and 2cantango - as good friends.
