QLink 600VA UPS for 10,000 Naira at Computer Village?
« on: September 12, 2005, 08:27 PM »

Hello,

I'm about to buy a new UPS to replace one that recently stopped working.  Since I hate leaving my site to go anywhere, I found someone who is going to Computer Village, Ikeja for some PC pheripherals, and I'm thinking of asking him to buy me a UPS  too.  He's asking for 10,000 naira for a 600VA Qlink UPS.

I think he's overpricing this too much, since:
- He's going to buy other items during his journey, and not just the UPS.
- 600VA UPS systems of other brands are listed on Gafunk as costing 5,000 naira.

What do you advice?  Is a Qlink branded UPS really that expensive, or is this guy trying to make 5,000 naira (100% profit!) off me for just one purchase?

Seun.

Mine first UPS was a Bluegate 650VA model, and the coil got spoilt in a month.  The repairman showed my his store and 80% of the damaged and abandoned UPS systems in his store were Bluegate models.  In addition to this, after another few months my Bluegate UPS got spoilt again a few months after repairs.  This shows that Bluegate is an unreliable UPS brand.

What UPS Brand would you recommend?  I need something that will last and I'm ready to pay 1k extra for it.

It's ridiculous. You can get 2 of those that go for as low as 4,500 and hope for the best! Even when one give way you will still have a backup.

The guy's charge is too much. You can get other brands but I learnt APC is the best so far but costs more. I'm not sure of the price at present but I know it's above 10K

I got a Mercury UPS for 6,000 naira and I think it will be ok.  They told me Mercury and APC are the best, after I asked for Mercury.

Mercury, I think it's also good. Since you've gotten it, give it a try and let's see.

Yes, Mercury and APC are the best. I have been using an APC in my office for over two years and there hadn't been any problem yet. I even use one at home, for my electronics. Sometimes I use it to charge my phone, TV and DVD player and at times my blender, all simultaneously! This reveals how rugged APC is, and its only 450VA. I power my own with a 500VA Densine stabiliser 'because i discovered one problem with UPS is power fluctuations.

Y ou can convert your UPS into an inverter or generator. Remove the battery it came with and replace it with a car battery. Note the power of the UPS, so as not to overload it, the higher current battery you buy the longer it will last. If you have battery or battries already, get more current from it by connecting them in parrallel. I.E Positive to positive and Negative to Nagative of the same voltage.

If I replace the 7Ah battery with a 200Ah battery how long will it take to charge the battery?

If I even connect 2 or 3 of them in parallel how many hours will it take to charge them?

AFAM, it will take very long to charge, I advise u charge it externally. Get a DC power supply of at least 10 amps 12 or 24 volts depending on your battery voltage. If you can't, measure the voltage coming out from the UPS and buy the battery of the same voltage with it.

Good, so people should understand that replacing the battery with a bigger one may take up to 20hrs or more to charge and that they may need an external charger which comes at a cost for the charging to make sense.

Thanks.
