Okonko And Ekpe Confraternities
« on: September 26, 2008, 04:07 PM »

These confraternities are popular among the ibos , ijaws, ibibioa and Efiks. i believe they are responsible for most ritual related kidnappings in iboland and are very very dangerous blood suckers.

My question is: why do we still keep an underlying culture like that in Africa? Is it something to write home about? Secret cults like this should be banished like the govt did to the university ones. What do y'all think?

Do you know the meaning of a cult or confraternity?  Ekpe is a masqurade confraternity among ibibios and not even igbos. okonko is the same I think and I think those things are defunct in this christian era. there is nothing in igboland called new yam festival cult. new yam festival is not even a pagan festival. It's as plain as the name suggests. Whomever is telling you any different needs to have his head checked.

My bad. Which part? I've always known Ekpe to be an ibibio thing but Okonko am very sure of. There are some igbos that live in the riverine area that have similar cultures with ibibios. same goes for those in ebonyi state that have a similar ogoja culture. But ekpe must have been an adopted culture.

he he he.
You don't want to go there.
do you know what location the ritualists travel to in order to obtain their "powers" Lips sealed
My sister from what I heard,
It's none of the locations you mentioned
The same area of Nigeria has even exported rituals and juju to other parts of the world.
guess who they are? Lips sealed

I bu ada mazi? ekpe is no way in arondizuogu because that is where I come from.  May be aro chukwu , the home land of the whole Aro people and it's possible because of it's proximity to the ibibios. Get your facts right because abu m ama ala,

Ikwuano areas of Abia state.
They border cross river/Akwaibom that may explain the similarity in culture

You see what I mean. That's why about 95% of igbos do not know what is ekpe. It's people like me that wangle and meager with women that knows the nitty gritty of these cultures.

As a Christian of course I hate all these cultural things because they all believe in sacrificing chickens and goats to some god.
It's nothing like what people like deepzone would want you to believe.
I know people from those areas and during Ekpe festivals all they do is invite frends and cook and eat rice then go to the village square and watch the Ekpe kill a goat.

I also hear some areas of Ngwa have it also and like you said all these areas have a common boundary with our Ibibio neighbours

They are mere masqurade societies for men and christians do not partake in them because it was a pagan culture. It's not a diabolic entity or supreme cult like Ogboni fraternity which Deepzone tactically ignored.

You are wrong here !
Ekpe is a festival celebrated in places like Arochukwu,Ihechiowa,Ututu,Ikwuano,Umuahia etc.
Its a masquerade  festival capped with native dances and wrestling in some places.  Undecided
It might be pagan oriented  Undecided but i know Christians alike still celebrate it.(cook, invite friends and have fun)
Its has nothing whatsoever to do with ritual killings or sacrifices.  Cool

Arondizogu and ekpe not too sure, what they do is IKEJI FESTIVAL.
As for Okonko my villa do that one, every 3rd month of the year. Its just festival to usher in the new planting season. The wkend is always lively, peops come from far and wide to celebrate it.
