Why Do We Nigerians Love Been Respected Too Much, Yyyyyy
« on: September 28, 2008, 06:06 PM »

Sometimes i just wonder why we Nigerians love been respected too much. Imagine a 45 year old man who left his position as a manager because he is tied of been boss by a 27years. Imagine a Nigerian particularly been very very angry and pissed off because a junior called him without adding something like bro. and co to his name.
Its just too ill ,

What exactly is wrong with it?

If it was the other way round, many of you will complain that Nigerians have no respect.

How much more can anyone detest everything associated with themselves?  Shocked

The whole thing is irritating to me. The man who quit his job is a loser and as we all know losers never win. As far as I am concerned it is ignorance. My kids will be taught that an older person is Ma or Sir but I will not force my kids to kneel or freaking lie down and stain their clothes all in the name of making someone feel that they can now begin to live because someone "showed them respect". respect yourself and everything else will fall in place.

It's just our thing. I mean would you want yourchildren to treat their elders the way Americans treat thei elders. Mba, Tufia. But your right, we try too hard to get respect.

I think it's just a culture thang, it's our way of showing respect. They do it in some Asian countries too. For instance, in Thailand and India, they have a title for elderly people as a sign of respect. Leaving your job because your boss is younger than you or insisting on being addressed as Engr., Pastor, Lawyer is what I really don't find necessary.

must we jetison everything that identifies us for the western way of life?

I do agree that there should be moderation in the whole thing but respecting your elder(not kissing the ground to make him happy) is African and we will do well to uphold that good old virture.

But the title thing, chief this, mama that, ochina nwata (with stolen money) is uncalled for.

Nothing is wrong with addressing someone with engineer. After all the westeners invented it and use it. The write it against there names.

Please let us remain africans while we try to get the good things from the west.

@poster
so you ll rather have the situation in the western world where  child beats his/her parents up and they make excuses for them or children telling their parents to shove it or shut up of mess off
people who like titles is an individual thing and you can't generalise besides people have ben called chief bla bla since forever
