Abn: American-born Nigerian>>> "i Aint No African!"
« on: July 15, 2006, 02:43 AM »

I typed this quoted post below up on another Nigerian site a few years ago, please read it and tell what you think of the situation it covers. I mainly want to know if those of you who live in the US or other places outside of Nigeria/Africa find this mindset of my sister-in-law and her mainly American born Naija friends and family pairs to be consistent with alot of Naija kids around your way.

I know around my way, the majority of the American born and raised African kids---- mind's well be just plain ol African-Americans cause that's what they feel most comfortably expressing themselves as, and being referred as, ESPECIALLY Igbo and other South East Nigerian-American kids; they seem to melt into the greater African-American populous super quick from what I've observed.

Quote
Yesterday I was over at my wife's parent's house helping her dad do some home improvements. While there, my sister-in-law was talking on the phone to one of her friends, when I overheard her mention to her friend that she doesn't like Nigerian guys, and would never date one.

So after her talk with her friend I asked her why she felt the way she did about dating a Nigerian boy, and she replied that they just weren't her "type", and furthermore it just wasn't Naija boys, but African guys period.  Now that struck a bit of a nerve with me, and I asked how could she say such a thing---- when she herself was African. Well, to say the least, that was obviously the wrong thing for me to say, because she immediately when ghetto on me and in a loud bitchy voice blurted out "I aint no African".  Shocked

In a state of utter shock, I replied with, " you are an African; aren't your parents African, aren't they Nigerian? Her: "Yeah, so what, that's them, not me. I wasn't born in Africa, I don't talk like one, I don't speak any African languages, I don't act like one; and I only been there like once, and I don't even remember it all that much. And plus I don't even really know any Africans other than what's in my family,  so!!! BENIN: "What about Kells, and Nina (two Naija friends of hers)?" HER: "They ain't African, either. Our parents, and uncles and stuff are African, but we aren't!!! We were born and raised in America, and hardly know anything about Naija or Africa period,  so what's the point? Even our own cousins from Naija say we aren't African,  Sooo. And plus we don't want to be African; what's so special about being African? Nothing!!!"   Undecided

As I stood in shock, and in an state of discontent,  shacking my head side to side in a show of disbelief over what I just heard this little 13yo say, her father came into the area from the next room were he must have been standing listening to the conversation. In a sad and distraught voice, he blurted out,  "How can you say that? You are African!! Your mother and I, your sister!! Where did you get these foolish ideas from; who's been teaching you this stuff? Your cousins back home? HER: " No, it's the truth. And you guys can't make us be something that we aren't and don't want to be,  Ok? Sorry!!  Lips sealed

So that was about the jest of the conversation. Now my question to you'all is, have any of you living outside of Nigeria ever seen anything like this happen? Is this a common feeling amongst 2nd, 3rd, and so on,  generation Nigerians and or Africans alike,  in the US or whatever other nation you live in?

By the way; I found this article below in which gives a little insight into this situation.

Quote
ABN: American-born Nigerian

When a stranger takes a look at me, they immediately assume that I am of Caribbean descent. After denouncing this assumption, I proudly declare, “Actually, I’m Nigerian”. The statement that follows is usually something like this, “You don’t look African” or “But, you don’t have an accent.” Already accustomed to these remarks, I often respond saying, “Both of my parents were born in Nigeria. I am a first generation Nigerian-American.” It is rather amusing to engage in a debate regarding whether I should consider myself a Nigerian.

Who defines what it is to be a Nigerian? Is it the color of our skin or the manner in which we speak? Perhaps, it is a “state of mind” or it can be seen in our character. In a past issue of either the African Abroad or African NewsReel newspaper, a young woman wrote about the Igbo ethnic group. Before anyone labels what it is to be Igbo, you must first be a living example for others to see. Simply knowing your ethnic dialect whether it is Igbo, Yoruba, or Edo does not exclusively make one a Nigerian. Allow me to illicit this point by using an interesting example.

An annual African beauty pageant consisted of many young women of color from various parts of Africa and the Caribbean. When asked by the organization’s coordinator to bring a flag of any African nation or one of their own countries, there was one Nigerian contestant who revolted. She argued that she wanted to represent the American flag because this is where she was born. However, this individual although born in the US., was brought up in Nigeria! My question is, “When an American citizen is reared or spends a great deal of time elsewhere, are they not still considered a Nigerian?” Many couples and families today continue to leave Nigeria to give birth to a child in the US. After doing so, they return back home and continue with their lives until that child is ready to enter the university. Indeed, there is nothing wrong with allowing your child to have access into what many refer to as “The Land of Opportunity”.

The main line of reasoning that I am trying to arrive at is the fact that in order to keep Nigeria alive, we must carry our father’s land not only in the back of our minds, but also within our hearts and in our daily lives. Parents, who bring up their children in the US., should try to instill the culture and rich heritage of Nigeria. Teach your children their language, tell them stories about Nigeria, provide them with recipes for cooking Nigerian dishes and guide them while preparing it; most importantly, take your family home with you when you visit every summer or during Christmas. It has become a common thing among Nigerians, particularly among the Igbo, to find a child of Nigerian parents who denies their heritage due to indignity. The younger generations of Nigerian-Americans as well as those born home who now reside in the US. are lost. Dressing in provocative attire, sporting tattoos and multiple piercing is the cool thing to do. My question for them is, “ Does these material things define you?” If so, this is not a positive reflection of Nigeria. No one said that it would be an easy task to maintain our own culture on American soil, but what about the Asians, Jews, and Indians?

I can still recall the day when my fellow Nigerians called me “A.B.N.” as I walked into the room. They laughed as they spoke in Broken English saying, “Ah, come and see American-born Naija oh!”  What was later revealed to them is a young lady who epitomized what it means to have class, dignity and respect for herself and the land of her ancestors. Yes, you can see Nigeria when you look at my past, my present, the future, and me.

Hero I would go by the accent with which a person speaks English for an initial assessment of their nationality and cultural background, regardless of what their travel documents indicate.

If a person speaks with an undiluted American accent then in my book that person is culturally an American citizen.  Conversely if person speaks with strong traces of a Nigerian accent then that persons basic cultural sensibilities will certainly have been molded by Nigerian rather than American preceptions and moral values, even if that person can produce a birth certificate from Mars.

Anyone born of Nigerian parents in America or Europe who decides to reject being a Nigerian, Let the person be. But, I know an outstanding young lady born in America and also lives there who is proud to tell me and others that she is a Nigerian. And I am equally proud of her.

The Nigerians who migrated to the US and Europe who are even ashamed to display their Nigerian identity online are the ones who have ego-problems.

Humm, interesting. Bonny Island, aka, Black Gold Island. It first came to fame as one of the major hubs of the extensively lucrative and historical Atlantic Slave Trade in which saw MILLIONS of living black gold pieces in the human flesh,  shipped out of the continent from ports on that one single Island--- most of whom were IGBO and IBIBIO, man of which ended up in the original 13 colonies and states of the US in mass.  Now a few centuries later another very lucrative trade in an new and improved black gold in the slick Oily form has taken root and is shipped in mass from that location. I hear that Island is very polluted, is this true?

Bonny Island is better than any place in Nigeria.
We have the most exotic beach, nature park and an awesome golf course. And the natives are friendly.

its people mixing ethnicity with nationality. Its pure idiocy. White Americans NEVER call themselves European Americans even though they should. They call the natives of the Americas Native Americans and blacks African Americans and Chinese immigrants but they are always just Americans. They created the illusion which implies that they are indegenous people of the Americas.

This problem would be easy of all the silly terminology was gotten rid off. Anyone who is a citizen off America is an American. Terms such as Black American, Nigerian or Chines or Carribbean American tell you nothing extra about the person. If you tell me You are Nigerian American it tells me nothing about your ethnicity or ancestry, wether you are edo or ijebu or isaleko or fulani etc just as the European American term doesnt say if you are Nordic or Swedish or Castillian or Sicilian. They are all terms meant to divide. And the world is actually become a global village to the point where you have citizens of African ancestry of nations as far flung as Australlia or China or Germany.

So the girl is a citizen of America. She is an American. That is seperate from her ethnicity which is cultural and historical. She obviously is of African descent, her ethnicity would be what culture she is surrounded and was raised in as well as what values her parents taught her. There are many Nigerians in Nigeria raised that where raised with none of the ethnic values or traditions or culture that is indegenous to their parents or so called tribe or ethnicity.

So when she says "I aint no African" she is being ignorant on multiple fronts. She is of African ancestry though perhaps truly her cultrual and ethnic upbringing is not. But if her parents choose not to impart their indegenous culture and ethnicity on the parent then that is really the parents fault and if the parents tried and the child refuses to its partly Americans cultures fault which demeans and puts down different African cultures and ethnicities and creates a stigma that those that posses it are somehow inferior, much like it did with those of East and Middle European descent in the early part of the nineteeth century and had Italian Americans or Irish Americans for example drop alot of their culture and customs and ethnicity to conform the the WASP puritan ideal.

True, am mixed but i tend to say i'm nigerian first and maybe after a while i remember oh yeah am mixed, i was born in nigeria, raised there and i may not have/follow most of the traditions i nevertheless consider myself a nigerian and i'D keep considering myself one no matter the citizenship i have or the country i live in, For me it's something ingrain, something that makes u more than u and more of a whole.  U have a sense of history, a sense of belonging 2 something wonderful in time past and present. Some of u might say then y take another citizenship or whatever but that could be due 2 many reasons. That does not nevertheless makes u less of a nigerian.  When i was a kid, i used to say i'm mixed i'm mixed! my friends and family told me that no matter what i will always be a nigerian because of my father and I'm happy for that, I'm proud of that and i carry that with me.  Now i go I'm nigerian! I'm nigerian!  Wink Wink

Hero,

I think of course it would be wrong as two left shoes to deny any American born or raised Nigerian, their African American heritage.

I see Chinese and Hispanic children complaining about their parents gettting mad because they do not know the rituals or the language.

And in the Nigerian child's position, an African American heritage is in a way, an Nigerian culture.

So why can't they claim it?

How different would this world look if Black Southern Baptist preachers had not taken Nkrumah into their church and helped him (he was here as a student and went broke)?

He went back with real knowledge, you can't buy it from a college, and became president of the first African country to recieve independence. They even have tapes of his speeches, showing how he would imitate the black american preaching style to sway the people to support him.

My point is AA and CA both benefit from the melding.

If she begin talk say she be Nigeria, she go bastardise and misrepresent Nigeria ways/cultures. She be Nigeria only to the extent that she is of Nigeria descent. In reality, she be american; no be say she no get claim to Nigeria o. But she be more american than Nigeria

I was born in America and grew up in Nigeria. Due to my dual nationality, I regard myself as a Nigerian-American, but usually, when asked, I tell people that I am from Nigeria because I grew up there. My parents were Nigerians so, automatically, I am a Nigerian. For kids, who were born and raised in America of Nigerian parentage, lets put ourselves in their shoes and accept their reasoning that they are Americans. I am sure, most of us, if we were in such a situation would consider ourselves as one. This calls for understanding and acceptance, even if it contradicts our African culture of hailing from our father's village.

This is very common among  Nigerians, once they're mistakenly  born in America they try to claim America even more than the Americans. Those that have  stayed for some few years act like their ancestors  founded America.  I'm sure if someone like Akon was from Nigeria  no one will know because he won't be identifying with the country like Akon does with Senegal.

I am what u would call an ABN ,  but i tell people straight up that i am Nigerian ,  and sometimes its not the parents fault. like my parents and late grandma taught my sibilings and i nigerian cultures and yoruba,  my yoruba isnt all that great but i understand 100% ,  anyways my sister and i picked up my the culture but my brother decided not to,  he doesnt deny being nigerian but he doesnt no a thing about the culture ,

what pisses me off sometimes is when people say that i'm not nigerian b/c i wasnt born there ,  or u don't look or act nigerian ?

what does a nigerian look like ? and how does a nigerian act ?

I find it very stupid  when Nigerians no matter were they are born claim another thing especially those in the first or second generation.
In other words if its the grandparents that migrated. or maybe if one of the parents is American

Seriously you can tell o.  There is a BIG difference.  I can tell acata from naija any day and most other people can.  We don't act the same and a I'm if you think about you can tell the difference too.  As for the look part me myself I don't look like you typical naija woman, people tend to think I'm acata when they look at me but my attitude, the way i speak lets them no right away I'm not acata.

For example i had to join a lab group for school, there were 2 naija, 1 indian and 6 acata's.  I remember that first week, the acata's always asking "esther where are you from?"  I would say Dallas because I just moved from there 2 months earliar but they would always say "No something different, thats not how dallas chicks behave."  One of them even said "i act too quite to be american."
So basically even Acata knows that there is a difference between naija, Africans in general and them.

, it really depends on the person.  my best friend peju is yoruba born here and raised here, she hears yoruba well but speaks it poorly.  only through facial features you would be able to tell she is naija.  but she doesnt believe she is nigerian. shes black american according to her, she dates AA's all of that.
If you were to tell me hey I'm naija, i wouldnt argue with you, you are proud of who you are, were you come from, and you know your lineage and you don't deny it.
me i was born in nigeria, I came to the states when i was 10, people always say "do you even remember home sef, you are an american"  The thing is my parents never let me forget home, america was outside but asoon as you stepped into my parents house its naija.

If you feel ok with the term ABN then no problem, the one i don't like is acata naija/acata nigerian, ugh and a majority of my friends who are ABN are now using that term to describe themselves.

, but seriously omogenaija between us Esthers (i wont tell anyone Wink ) u fit tell naija from acata abi?  you know us africans have african radar (similiar to gaydar) Grin
