The MTV Africa Music Awards 2008 takes place at the Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria on the 22nd of November 2008.
The award show will focus on music from a variety of genres includig Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, Afro pop, Afro beat, Kwaito, Bongo flava, Dancehall and Soul. The MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain will be preceded by four concerts celebrating the musicians nominated for the awards. The concerts featuring international and local nominees, will take place in Johanesburg, November 5th, Nairobi, November 9th, the Democratic Republic of Congo November 13th and Lagos on November 15th, 2008.
The nominations are released on or around 7 October and consumers make the final decision in all voting categories; voting closes on 18 November.
There will be 13 separate music award categories including
1. ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2. BEST MALE 3. BEST FEMALE 4. BEST GROUP 5. BEST NEW ACT 6. BEST ALTERNATIVE * 7. BEST HIP-HOP * 8. BEST R&B * 9. VIDEO OF THE YEAR 10. BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE 11. MAMA LEGEND AWARD 12. MY VIDEO AWARD 13. LISTENERS CHOICE AWARD…
* Categories that include both international and African artists.
The “Listeners Choice” Award will be decided by radio listeners across Africa. All categories are open to African artists except the My Video Award which be awarded for a viewer created video. The Best Alternative, Best Hip-hop and Best R&B categories are open to international artists as well as African artists.

Looking at the list of nominees, you'll realise that our Nigerian artistes deserve it more than all the others. Quality of music, popularity (Africa and international), even looks - however you look at it, our artistes deserve it more.

You are asking why include non Africans or Africans not living in Africa. If your question is the first one, let me ask you; why did the Mobos / MTV Europe have 'Best African Artistes' category even though the winners are not Europeans and most live in Africa? Heck even the Grammys too,
