Enough has been said-for and against.
I'd be more interested in a local mail company though. Like saintchux said, What we need is not yahoo Nigeria. But a Nigeria company that will out perform yahoo.
Take search for example, we all know the story behind Google. Yahoo, for one, has been frantically working to leapfrog Google, which has already been relegated to the back in several key markets worldwide, getting less than 2 percent of queries in Internet-happy South Korea, and 17 percent of the queries in China, the world's most important emerging online market. The company has also been trounced by local competition in Russia.
What this means in effect is that, there are people out there trying to break the strong hold of the Google empire, and even in some countries their Governments are putting up money for search engine research. Can we get that kind of funding here, because for governments to be putting up such funds just for research-it is evident of the potential market such enterprises still have. The internet is a potential market for users in every country, but it seems only people in developed economies are able to see that,as the internet has become a part of their lives.
For example, according to newsweek magazine(
http://www.newsweek.com/),Google dominates searching in Western Europe—82 percent of queries come its way in Germany—but the German and French governments plan to put up $165 million and $122 million, respectively, for search-engine research. In Japan, not only is Google running behind Yahoo, but the government is reportedly pumping some $125 million into local search efforts.
The company has also been trounced by local (search)competition in Russia.
In effect, what this means is that people have started building their own local search engines to fit into their own perspectives. It's all about localized content. The innovation has already begun.
