Nutter, don't get me wrong. I said swimming is not a pre-requisite to join the NAVY. Many people from dry lands in the norther part of nigeria who have never seen a stream before not to talk of swimming join the NAVY by virtue of quota system. I tell you they don't know how to swim but they were recruited as officer cadets into the NAVY, and they did their training in kaduna before moving down to portharcourt. NAVAL Training college and SEA school is in PH, you may be trained on how to swim and go into water using other swimming gadgets that divers use when you get there. But for BASIC MILITARY training which is 6 months for short service commision officers you do most of your training with the army and airforce cadets as combatants. Get my point, you do not need to know how to swim before joining the NAVY; you can join and you,ll be trained on how to swim effectively.

@Ishmael,

Now that you have clarified, I understand what you mean. I said what I did because earlier you said: "I don't think swimming is compulsory because so many people joined without even knowing what swimming is and they are still in the NAVY."

Do you know how long the training in PH lasts? As Naval officers, I think  it should last longer than the 6 months in KD. What do you think?

Yes ma'am, I sure am.

If people who didn't even contest elections can become members of the senate (the highest law-making organ of government), then swimming as a naval requirement is a small matter.

Nutter, NDA Kaduna is for the BASIC MILITARY TRIANING. You do all the basic military training like the airforce and army cadets there; shooting, marching, obstacle, bush exrecise etc. It is after passing out from the academy that you go to PH for  NAVAL training as an officer. But during the six months training you may spend up to a month in PH and Lagos to learn about NAVAL equipments and installations before passing out. After passing out you MUST attend course(s) in any of the NAVAL Colleges or Training school before you can can be posted out to any of the NAVAL units to work.

hey thanks 4 that Ishmael, I'm assured. As for you nutter, though u might have a point, I don't it's everybody in the navy that goes on a ship, it just depends on your area of specialisation, I mean if u are in administration what the hell do u need a ship 4? You might as well teach everybody in the airforce how to parachute!!!! even people in control towers,

« #46 on: July 27, 2006, 05:53 PM »

Yes Kuntakinte, you understand me very well why i said swimming was not a pre-requisite for joining the NAVY. Some of them work in administration units far away from the sea. A lot of them work in Navy HQ Abuja, NDA kaduna and AFCSC Jaji in kaduna where there are no ships and no ocean. We will only be naive to be thinking that you must know how to swim before joining the NAVY. Its like saying you must know how to drive a car before buying one. Its not true because some people buy cars before they start learning how to drive.

Sorry folks, I don’t mean to put too fine a point on it but I don’t think I agree. ALL Naval men/women should know how to swim whether they are to hold administrative positions or not. It’s like saying not all soldiers should be trained in firearms because some will be manning desks. Firearms training is a basic requirement. You then go on to specialise in other areas such as the use of artillery, communications, medical support, intelligence gathering and analysis, engineering support et cetera. The fact that this may not be the case in Nigeria does not make it right or acceptable. What happens in better-run countries? My friend here applied to join the British Navy and faced the same problem. He couldn’t swim. He was given time to learn before the next round of interviews but he just couldn’t make the cut. He not only failed the swimming test, he also failed because he could not hold his breath underwater for a certain period of time. This is how I know things to be. Perhaps the Nigerian situation is different.

I believe Txlonghorn is in the American Army. It will be useful to get his take on this.

@ Nutter,

I've not read the whole thread, but I think I know that you trying to say.I can't speak for the Marines, Air force or Navy but in the ARMY, new recruits go through the 9 week  basic training. In basic training recruits go through a massive program in military life.

Week 00 Reception

Week one Fall in

Week two Directions

Week three Endurance

Week four Marksmanship( just the basics)

Week five Trials

Week 6 Camaraderie

Week 7 Confidence

Week 8  Victory forge

Week 9 Graduation

After basic training, you can then go to a specialty school/ job you good at. In my case I never did go to basic training because I was in the ROTC in High school. And the ARMY paid my way through college.

To all my ARMY brothers and sisters out there, SIMPLIFY_

Thanks TX,

We were trying to work out if the ability to swim is a requirement of the navy. For commonsensical reasons, seems unlikely to me that it isn’t, but maybe the case in Nigeria is different.

Thanks again, mate.

You don't have to learn how to swim to be in the navy, you can be a cook, or repair mechanical parts, or be an electrician

Re: Nigerian Navy Recruiting Graduates!
« #51 on: July 28, 2006, 07:59 AM »

Zebudaya, don't mind them jo. Some of them don't understand what we are talking about. Please oo!!, we are talking about the NIGERIAN NAVY and it does not affect the way and manner cadets and recruits get trained in the US, Britain, Germany, Australia, Ghana or SouthAfrica. Lets limit our discussion to nigeria alone please. Training, organisation and administration differs from country to country, it can never be the same. Even British and US military are not the same in terms of training, organisation and administration. Like what Txlonghorn said, the US army recruits spend 9 weeks in training, but in nigeria BASIC MILITARY training whether in the army, airofrce or navy and either as a cadet or recruit is 6 MONTHS minimum; some people in the airforce and navy have had to spend 9months before to be trained as recruits in nigeria. I will still say it again a lot of people in the NIGERIAN NAVY do not know how to swim and they are still there. Its not everybody in the NAVY that goes to sea mind you. Its like saying everybody in the airforce must know how to fly either as a pilot or aircrew, which is not possible. Lets not compare US and British military with that of Nigeria, they are far far ahead of us. Imagine in nigeria it is only the airforce that has airplanes; the army and navy don't have; which is not obtainable in the US and Britain. The army, navy and marines have their own airplanes and helicopters. The Us and British(Royal)navy even have jet fighters that take off from aircraft carriers on sea which nigeria does nt have; while the army and marines have combant helicopters which nigerian army does nt have. There is a difference between nigeria and other foreign countries in terms of training, organisation and administration.

na wa for the content of una argument!  Just try scaling through the preliminary tests and if u can't swim, u have sometime to start learning now. The relevance or not shl not be an issue, even without being interested in the Navy it's advisable to learn how to swim!

Ishmael,

The problems I am having are:
(1) I am a Chemical Engineering graduate and cannot get COREN certification since I am still serving and you cannot be a COREN registered member until you have worked for atleast 4 years in an Engineering related firm.
(2) Is my still serving(NYSC) any barrier?

I have already collected the NAVY form though, but I just want to know if those 2 conditions above, disqualifies me authomatically.
