olofofo,
I have called my friend on your behalf for the 4m fibre dish but my fear is that I wouldnt want a situation where you would back out because of unexpected expenses from other sources.my friend is too blunt for excuses.besides,the owner is her neighbour so she wouldnt want any embarrassment from him.you start negotiations today,you pick it up the following day.I will get a definite schedule and price from her this evening.

All,
Here's a question on motorising dishes: Is there any particular reason why we are
still using diseqc 1.2 and external positioners with our jacks (actuators)  when we
can simply use the inbuilt positioner (USALS) in our recievers to move our dishes?
Looks like most of us don't realise that with USALS, you don't have to buy an
external positioner to store your channels one by one over a two week period.
Just a thought, though. Maybe someone needs to throw more light on this?

TV3 is still showing live. You need to check you setup.

These former Nss 7 channels (RDV, STV 1&2, Canal 2) are really very promiscuous.
I found them on W3 bird yesterday. This is not that the W3 dish picked signals of
Sirius because i got the Canal 2 and STV 2 on the same transponder which is not the case for Sirius 4.

@maddoxoj,
That was quite a handful. Thanks so much. It looks like it's early days
yet for USALS to be fully deployed in this part of the world. But will keep
keep on trying though. Who knows, the Chinese may soon come out with
their own cheap version of jacks that are USALS compliant. Grin

@whimsical,
You can get a satfinder in lagos or any other major city. Just check where they are selling
satellite tv items like decoder and stuff. Or better still contact olofofo to send it to you. He
will tell you what you need to do. As for 90cm dish, Lnb & Receiver you can get them in any
MYTV store near you anywhere you live.

I have explained how the USALS motor works a number of times before. Use the search tool at the bottom of the thread; you can enter for example "enigma diseqc motor". In the meantime here is a link to a picture I once posted: http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-7715.832.html#msg2176624

To simplify/add to what maddoxj said: the diseqc/USALS motor is more readily usable with a dish up to 1.2m using specifically a receiver that is USALS capable (most modern receivers are). When motorising bigger dishes, the motor is not a USALS motor but a jack/actuator combined with a positioner. The jack/actuator does not ordinarily work with USALS which is why you have to locate each satellite manually.

With regard to the usefulness of the diseqc/USALS motor in Nigeria, I personally think that they can be useful for some people with 90cm dishes in that you can use just the one dish for the satellites that can be received on 90cm e.g. the one motorised 90cm dish will get 27w, 5e, 7e, 36e, 68e etc. In particular if Daarsat starts operating and if they are on 27w as is rumoured, people will have to consider whether they really would like three dishes to get Daarsat, HiTV/DSTV and MyTV or one motorised dish.

PS the diseqc/USALS motor has become very cheap now and can be bought here in the UK for the equivalent of 10,000 naira.

@Enigma,
We need to find out why the USALS motor can power a 1.2m dish and
not 2.4m or 3m. Perhaps we can adapt it over here to suit our needs?

George_D

If you look in the picture in the link that I posted earlier, you will see that the dish goes on the diseqc motor; looking at the size of that motor you can see why it can never carry a 2.4m dish; even a 1.2 dish is pushing it to be honest (though it is claimed that one particular motor can do 1.4m). So, it is not merely a question of electrical power but also one of ability to support the weight of the dish.

I believe that should really not be a big deal if someone wants to get it done. in Europe where USALS technology is commonly used there are several satellites that are easily receivable on dishes that are 90cm and less, so it'd be quite unusual for anyone to require any dishes larger than that. I guess that's why the manufacturers have limited their production for only KU dishes. I just wish someone would take advantage of the fact that most KU and C Band FTA installations in Nigeria are done on big dishes (1.8m and larger) and develop such a product for bigger dishes. My only fear is that the thing might not sell. Take into perspective the fact that most big dish users in Naija still don't motorise their setup even as cheap as the gear come. Unless, maybe, the ease of installation and use may become an attractive selling point.

To think of it, I remember that I once had literature from a company that manufactures and supplies TVRO systems (those large, usually aluminum-alloy type dish ensembles used by big broadcasting outfits like CNN and NTA) which they touted to act very much like the USALS system. I can't remember the company's name now, but the prices of those hardware are prohibitive. Their polar mount fixed dishes start at about $1,500 while the motorised type started at about $8,000. No matter, I still believe a USALS-like setup for bigger dishes should not be quite a big deal. I think I'd try and make out time to research this, any findings would be duly posted. Wink

@Enigma,
Yes, I noticed from the picture that the USALS motor is rather frail looking.
That can be taken care of by producing one that is heavy duty. Once again
I think the Chinese can take care of that (they are always copying everything
these days Grin)

@maddoxoj,
Necessity is the mother of invention as they say. If we need it here and there
is a market for it, someone will eventually make it available.
Maybe we should start creating the awareness. Who knows? The fire may catch
on faster this time.
