@ Gamine,

what's with the naija blah blah beginning part of your post? It was simply unecessary, you could have just posted without that.

Newayz, most S.A music i listen to is Hiphop. Outside that, the other genres are very few.

Tumi
Proverb - from Heartbeat, to that song he used Martin Luther King. Jr's speech as a sample
ProKid
Optical Illusion
H20
HHP
also  feelin' Zola's Don't Cry.

Others are Hugh Masekela or somethn like that, Freshly Ground, Danny K, MXO, Prime Circle, like Mafikizolo as well, then there's this girl, can't remember the name, song was with Hugh, thandiswe or somethng like that. . .

South Africa ranks among the top music makers on the continent. Congo has been a serious contender in that region (I heard), but I still doubt if their music can compete with south African rhythms.

Nigerians do appreciate S African music- the problem is people like Mpele and his cohorts who storm other countries' websites and start raining abuse and insults on any black person who isnt South African and colored. Such people have to be corrected and straightened out since there are very few other solutions to that kind of craziness.

Personally to me, SA music sounds naturally for Charities. I mean it just has that sound and tone that makes you just pull out your check book and started writing your life savings away.

Exactly there is just too much soul in their music even listening to their national anthem is enough to make one sober

I'm not really conversant with the new artistes but at least I know freshlyground. I was impressed with the song "I'd like". I've always liked songs from Lucky Dube, Mariam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, Chaka chaka.

Oh beautiful south african music!!!
i spend four years there and got hooked.
i still remain a big fan even after i left the country.
if you love live music, you must see Freshly ground. one of the best world music bands around.
I saw them a few times in Cape Town and was smitten.
Every album of theirs (all 3) has a cherished place in my collection.
The lead vocalist - Zo is simply amazing. That girl rocks.
as good as some Nigerian acts are, live performance is still a big problem. i have seen most of the nigerian big acts on stage and i was rarely impressed.
Freshlyground blew the roof each time i saw them play.

the biggest heritage of the south africans music wise is Jazz.
the pool is enviable; Bra Hugh (Hugh Masekala) remains a force and i could post a coupe of his more popular tracks later (I want to get the spellings right). in the interim check out Stimela and the duet he had with Sibongile Khumalo.
that lady Sibongile Khumalo has the most amazing voice i have ever heard. her voice is as big as her body.
if you are a fan of live music and have a jazz leaning, buy, borrow or steal a copy of Live at the Market place by Sibongile Khumalo.
to have a feel of one of the greatest Bassist to ever come out of Africa check out any of Sipho Gumede albums. he died a few year back but his works still speak. Popular tracks include Thank you for listening, from me to you and song for John Kyali.

Kwaito is king in SA and it does not get better than Kabelo (Mr Bouga luv) , he is reformed and living on the safe lane these days and the music is better than ever. check out the track 'I am King' from his latest album.
Mzekezeke is the Dbanj of SA and is another linch pin of Kwaito.
I loved Zola's Don't cry and i was suprised when i then saw a similar song by Mode 9. i wonder who copied who.

for rap fans, it does not get better than Skwatta Kamp (mkhukhu funkshen is one of the best) and pitch black afro, although the raps are in Zulu.

for the english rappers, Tumi and the volume   is the main man. i was never much of a fan but he is good all the same.

Yeah!

I have to see Freshly ground LIVE sometime!

im not so much for Jazz, still like it tho Wink

i love the Kwaito, and i dont care that the rap is in Zulu, its still FUN.

@Still,

Yup! We used to have video tapes of Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Brenda Fassie and Mariam Makeba

Its Your wedding day, i can still remember how we used to act this song Grin

nkobruthi

kun jani, people!

for those saying their music is too soulful, it's probably because you only listen (or watch on tv when flipping through channels, as in most cases) that particular genre. i love kwaito and house genres.

Afro Z - My Coldest War
Judith Sephuma- A Cry, A Smile, A Dance
Brenda Fassie- Vuli Ndlela
