6-3-3-4 Educational System To Be Changed to 6-9-3

The Federal Government/Ministry of Education says the Nations 6-3-3-4 educational system will from next session be changed to 6-9-3 .

Personally I think this people are just out to kill every sector in the country. They keep chasing shadows, leaving out the real problems .

What do you think about this development?

This is big news, Layi, and we need the following information, in detail please:
- How exactly did you learn about this?  Tell us everything!
- What does each stage of the 6-9-3 system represent?  How will it work?

This is really big news for education in Nigeria, and we seem to have beaten the Newspapers to it.

"The Federal Government has scrapped primary and secondary schools nationwide from the next academic session to give way for the new 6-9-3 Universal Basic Education (UBE), which would kick off nationwide in September next year." (layi's source, the Nigerian Tribune)

Are they crazy? Huh

This is unfair. But do you think this will work? and is this what we need concerning our education? It seems they really do not care again because most of their children do not attend Nigerian schools and if they do, it is just at the primary level.

@layi your source is wrong. i read it somewhere else that it is 9-3-4 not 6-9-3. the space between primary and secondary was scrapped because they felt there was no point separating it from the primary school. a commissioner in lagos even said something about common entrance exams being obsolete. check and confirm.

Layi heard about the new 6-9-3 system on radio and provided a link to the National Tribune which also says it's 6-9-3: "pre-basic 6 years, Basic — 9 years and Post-Basic — 3 years".  Kodewrita, are you sure your source more reliable than a National Newspaper?

Whether its 6-9-3 or 9-3-4, Nigeria Government nor get work! They should tackle the problems of the quality of education in Nigeria rather than waste time trying to adjust a formula.
This is highly irrelevant!

So does the govt think they can salvage the fast sinking boat of the nations education this way. A first degree in Nigeria is nothing but a school cert equivalent in the 80s.

Merging primary and secondary school seems to me as a not well thought out plan.

When i did my calculation it translates to student finishing secondary school by 21! Angry. So before they will finally get to and out of the university they will be about 30 something!

What gave them the idea that this will stop Nigeria from having an overpopulation of unemplyed school leavers.

You guys have got it twisted here....its not going to be 9years of secondary school, it will be 3years instead (that is just senior secondary)....meaning junior secondary will be combined with primary school. there will no longer be the normal common entrance examintaions
I'm sure none of the authorities will be crazy enough to want anyone in secondary school for 9years i mean c'mon now!

@ obong, its not exactly 4years in d rest of the world.

This is Stupid. Arrant Nonsense. Total Rubbish, Extremely ridiculous, And absolutely Foolish.

Why in the world would they want kids to go to Junior and high school and high school for 9 years? Nigerian universities say 4 years, but Strike and holidays make it 7 years. I wonder how they gon cope with 3 years university levels.

This is just insane... like come on!! A country should improve, not diminish. Nigeria needs Help! I think the youngsters in nigeria should stand up and Go against those [people]. They just sit <snip> and decide with their <snip>  mind that it'D be better if they toy-ed with people's life.

Times like this I wish I had some great powers.  This is so stupid.  I can't imagine being in high school for 9 years!  The six years is full of punishment, kneeling down under the sun, wearing useless uniforms and so many more.  This is crazy!  Isn't there anything that can be done to stop this useless and foolish disaster?

it's just a misplacement of priorities.....the configuration is not the problem with our educational system....there's alot more to be done than what the fed.ministry of education is doing

i don't agree with the new system and hope it won't go into effect.
it's going to ruin things. nigeria's illiteracy level/rate is over 50% or so. this is not the best way to reform. providing suppies and qualified teacher who are capable and commited to teaching is the strongest and best way to reform the educational system.

its not right, i  hope it doesn't get to be put in practice, i mean something should be done about the high rate of illiteracy in the country even among the supposed graduate, though I'm still in secondary school i don't think the 6-9-3 system will do the nation good. when i get back to school, me and my friends will get down  and talk it out. i think its time we started writing to this commisions. we the students should have been consulted before making such decisions. i mean shouldn't there be an annual conference concerning education that will bring the student and the commisions together. its time i went to ASO rock Grin

I guess we should start thinking of sending our children to school abroad. By age 21, they should be talking about their masters and not writing JAMB.

Our children? What about those of us who don't have children yet? Huh

Moreover, from my calculations, the normal age for a child to finish school here in Nigeria is 16. But with this new "development", it will be 19.

Kodewriter is right. Its 9-3-4 not 6-9-4. What this means is that it is now mandatory for every child to have 9 years of basic education from where he/she can either proceed to the senior secondary or opt for technical education.

This policy does not scrap 6-3-3-4 it is only an improvement on it. This means we will no longer have the primary school certificate as the minimun qualification in Nigeria but JSS 3 certificate.
