I Want To Be A Programmer But I Don't Like Mathematics.
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:02 PM »

I have  flair for programming in different languages e.g Java, C#, .Net etc I don't have an I.T background and not ready to go for certifications or school cos i believe i can learn via books and net, but my major problem is that i hate mathematics. How would that affect my passion for it because i know it involves lots of calculations?

and who said you need maths, per se?  All you need is the ability to think logically.  if you have that down, learning a particular language is a matter of syntax.

At the end of the day, there are different types of soup but they are all "soup".  How good of a cook you are of any soup depends on your ability to learn how to cook and your ability to try out new things.

In the end, practice makes perfect.

The languages u mentioned above are not maths driven, they are object driven. So take them on.

You really need mathematics for one reason, and that is toi improve your thinking faculty because, you have to be logical and remember, logics is the father of mathematics

logics is the father of mathematics?  Huh

u got it backwards. logic is a branch of mathematics.

Mathematics will surely help you in thinking and reasoning because programming is mathematical-like and not essay-like

While it's true you do not have to be a Math guru to be able to program, your ability to think logically and solve problems will determine how successful you can be as a programmer. If you totally suck at math though, programming will be very challenging to you. It does not matter what language you develop in. You just need to be able to think come up with solutions to problems.

Inasmuch as you dont need Maths to be a programmer, lets not forget that the first set of programmers were mathematicians, the first set of programming languages were designed to solve mathematical problems, where do you think words like variable and constant come from, mathematics was an integral part of programming, and I want to believe it still is.

One thing I know mathematics will do for you is help your problem solving skills. Wenever I pick a new language, I solve problems like fibonacci, tower of hanoi, pascal triangle, etc with it and thats all, I can do ANY OTHER THING with that language. Programming is all about problem solving, and like a colleague of mine said, "Your program is not the solution to the problem you are trying to solve, it's a way of expressing the solution so that you wont have to repeat the process of solving the problem again"

Learn mathematics and you will be a better programmer, shun mathematics at your own peril(just kidding, you can still be a good programmer).

I dont use to like maths, but this is waht I did. I bought new general mathematics for JS1 to JS3 and I solved over 70% of all the problems in it. Try it too. If NGM is too advanced you can try that for Pry 6 for a start. By the time you finish NGM book 1, you will find out that Maths is not so tough after all.

I used to hate maths right from my primary school, and boy I was very bad with numbers but I excelled in every other subjects.

I did electronics in secondary school, studied computer science in tertiary. I just managed to get my butt out of there.
They thought me nonsense there, always calculation, even the lecturers couldn't handle computers very well.

I started self-study immediately I left school, now I'm very good in mathematics.

What I'm trying to say in effect is that your programming enthusiasm & skills will definitely increase your math skills thereby making you a great mathematician.

You can program without knowing mathematics, but it won't get you far.

This is what you need to do:

Pick up a programming language, preferably JAVA, learn it very well whilst also learning algebra, Trigonometry and calculus.
It did wonders for me and I believe it will work for any one.

u don kolo i swear !!!

all u need is to be logically sound and u know what> logic is a bit harder than maths but u need maths to improve your logic and reasoning

I hate Maths too but i am stuck with it

You don't have to be especially good at Maths to become a good programmer but its a bonus your ability to think out of the box and try new stuff is what would help you because Maths can get pretty abstract at times and you have to apply real-life scenarios to your programs which go way beyond your knowledge of Maths

programmin aint all about maths, logic and creative reasoning is what is needed.your ability to know what you want to do and develop algorithms to make your code is what works.good luck Wink
