Edge,
Over here in America, they purposely do not want black kids to learn how to read.
In the past it was even against the law for Black Americans to learn to read.
Think about that: against the law.
Making such statements about hiding things in a book from black people is a way for them to start the process of lowering expectations for Black children and then not teaching them to read.

Also in the US, the stereotype is that blacks are good for only 3 things - SSS - Sex Singing and Sports. There was a time black authors couldn't even get a publisher to publish their work because they said blacks didnt read, unless it had to do with romance . It is also commonplace here for people in general not to recognize the face of bush in a picture, yet if u show them puff daddy, they will tell u till his residential address. In general, black or white, here is a question for u, if u spend most of ur time watching "Big brother", "American Idol" or any other reality show like that, or sports shows as opposed to reading educational books and watching educational shows, then the topic of this thread applies to u. Books in my opinion, are the best way to keep informed. Y? because it enhances ur brains via the power of imagination. If u r basing ur opinions and thought on what u c on TV, u r being dumbed down. Sorry but true. Especially with what is being shown on TV (and sadly, naija media is going this way too), people r being dumbed down and subliminally hypnotized. As always, my 2 cents

I don't know about your part of the world but in the UK the blacks (Nigerians/Ghanaians) and Asian are the most educated people I see around. A Vast number of black people can boast of at least 2 degrees and a Masters. So I don’t know where you are coming from.

The point of such things is this:
Blacks don't read = Blacks are animals, apes, monkeys, savages, simians.
Only good for slaves, sex, singing and sports.
Things you do not need to know how to read to do well.

It's not applicable to Nigerians. The West admits that Nigerians are well educated, but like to tag us with the 419 label. By the way, I 've never met a fool that does Jibiti, gbajue.
But among Americans, many of whom detest anything that could "tax" the brain.
Yoruba 've a saying "iwe lomo, ondo a ka e" ~ If your name is a book, Ondo will read you.
I could remember back in the mid-90s, the neo-cons published a book, Bell Curve, saying all those negative stereotypes about blacks, w.r.t IQ. They should 've gone to Oluwole to prove their theory.

Kabiyesi,
Continental Africans have the highest number of college degrees when they immigrate to America.
Even higher than Asians who come to America.
The West is not really interested in the uneducated illiterate people of Africa, who can do nothing for them, except work the fields giving the West their raw goods.
The West would have no choice but to acknowledge what they pretty much insist upon -- the only Africans getting in are the ones with college degrees.
Yet I have never even heard of them acknowledging any good thing about Nigerians or other Africans. You got a link for that?

I am so sorry to say this but here in America most of the black Americans don't read. Don't want to go to school. They just go to high schools of which some don't even graduate and the next thing is pregnancy or wasting their lives on the streets and after they will be saying they are deprived of education. A 15yr old B A girl already has two kids. I'm sorry tho. I am not trying to be a racist or anything but I am saying what I know and have seen. Even at school( colleges), they are the ones parambulating and making noises all the time. So I believe this thread is talking about them and not all the blacks.

Edygirl,
You don't have to convince me. You have to convince the Nigerian, posting from Nigeria, who said that he hears it about black people in Nigeria and around the world.
Of course one can go anywhere on this web and find whites talking about how Africans were not writing or reading hundreds of years ago, when they first got there.
It has been said about Blacks for at least 600 years long before there were African Americans.
Instead of trying to find excuses for racist nonsense against Black people ANYWHERE, we should just rebuke it for the garbage it is.

Drusilla please I wasn't trying to convince you. I only gave my honest opinion. That's the reason I don't go on Politics or Racism whatever posts. because I know people gets pissed off by me easily. Off course people from Africa are always ready to learn but there is no money at times but here the blacks can get grants and loans to go to school but no they NO they just don't want to go to school.

Edygirl,
I wouldn't think that pretending something that has been said about blacks in Nigeria and Africa for centuries, is suddenly really only about those easy victims of criticism: the African American slave descendants, would be taken well anywhere.
Are you saying only in the political room, they do not like false pretenses to prop up their self-esteem?

Edygirl,
You said: "Off course people from Africa are always ready to learn but there is no money at times ."
Were you aware that in America, after slavery, the African American former slaves, using just a bible, from 1880 to 1910 (over 30 years), went from 5 percent reading to 85 percent of them reading?
We did not have money. We did not get grants. We took what we had in our hand, a bible and used it to teach ourselves to read.
Isn't there at least one book in Africa? Don't your people care enough to make sure everyone can read even without money? It would just require people who really believed in education.
You claim you guys care so much more than African Americans.

To all u blacks talking about "them" and "you guys", please stop the stereotyping. fact is, both sides have their fill of bad people and things. Finally, WE ARE ALL ONE!!! Don't let the white man make u think otherwise. United we stand, divided we fall. Whitey knows this and trust me is afraid of what would happen if we worldwide decided to unite against him. As long as there is a "them ("them Africans" sold us into slavery)" and "us (all those people do is have babies from different fathers at a yng age)", we as black people will never unite/succeed. It is a calculated attempt by mighty whitey. Don't fall for it please. Also, where does one blk person get to call another black person "racist". What does "racist" mean? Let's start from there before proceeding. A word is enough for the wise

Edy, i guess you know all african americans to make such a blanket statement. I don't know any one that doesnt know how to read. Yes a few idiots i went to high school with are losers now because they wanted to be rap thugs, but hey thats not my problem, its their life. I guess it just depends on how u were raised. i don't think its fair to say they are only talking about us and not about u guys. Oh as for grants and financial aid, it would be a fool that would choose not to get an education that will be practically free. White students on campus at times are louder than the black students i might add. I have never been one of those loud talking, laughing and acting a fool sterotypes. So they are on their own with that. Well with all that said next time i think its better to say "some african americans, " instead of "most or all african americans, "
