As she tried brushing and flossing after meals? if yes, then she might have a problem with a tooth I.e. the breath can be caused by a pus in the gum, she will need to see a dentist idf this is the case.
bad breath can lso be a reflection of the state of her internal organs e.g. liver, kidney e.t.c.

I recommend she intensifies her personal hygiene and also see a dentist. dentist will advise her on what steps to take.

LOL krazystage:

The poster is in Nigeria.  Are there that many dentists there and most importantly, if present, are their prices affordable by the "common man"?

Here are a few tips:

1) Brush/Use chewing stick frequently

2) Since bad breath is caused by sulfur deposit on the tongue mostly, perhaps there is a herb/chemical that can b designed to get rid of the sulfur?  I don't know.

3) If the person can afford, buy mouth wash, preferably listerine if available.  If the person knows someone abroad, have them bring a bottle.

4) Avoid foods with garlic.  Garlic settles in the lungs and hence will be percieved with every breath u take.  In other words, no cure until levels subside.

Interesting the way you people underrate Nigeria. Do you how many dentists are produced every year in Nigeria? Most of them are even jobless, looking for teeth to fix. Grin

Oga Skidoc,

From from underrating my friend.  Did you look at the latter part of my question (because I knew someone wd say what u ended up saying)?  The one about Okorafor in Isiala Ngwa being unable to afford Peak Tin milk for his tea, not to mention tea, not to mention dentist?

Read it again and then tell me if I am under-rating Grin

That was why I also added in the latter part of my post that most of them are jobless looking for teeth to fix meaning that a hungry dentist's price would surely be less than affordable sef! So Aki na Ukwa Grin, carry Okorafor to dentist now now!

It is important to see a dentist, but at the same time you need to help your self too. How?

Flossing is very important, preferably twice a day. Use can use a thin thread. Try to smell what's on that "thread" and you'll be shocked of what lies between your teeth. Flossing helps prevent tooth decay.

Your tongue is the melting pot of bad breath. A tongue must be pink, no white residue. Use your brush or a tongue scrapper to remove any white residue from the entire tongue. This is very important 'because not many people know how to brush properly. They just brush the teeth only, and that's it. What of the tongue?

If you observe people, you'll see many with whitish tongue, that's H2S. And once you get closer, you'll need to bail out 'because of Halitosis.

Personal hygiene starts from the mouth, down.

YinkaGal ~ Do you brush in that order? So you use Listerine before scrubbing the tongue and flossing? Don't confuse the guy.

After flossing and brushing as described earlier, then you can use any Antiseptic mouthwash. Listerine is the most popular here.

well bad breath is not only caused by lack of oral hygiene
but once she has implemented all the wonderful suggestions on this thread, including eating parsley and the bad breath does not subside
she should see a dentist
finally, some people are genetically predisposed to halitosis. sorry
if you are looking for a dentist, i know an excellent one. if you don't have money, don't worry, he will take whatever goats, rams, cows, chickens and tubers of yam that you may have. f'real

Contact your dentist and brush twice a day- before breakfast and after lunch with dentist recommended toothbrush and toothpaste and a good mouthwash.

gigitte ~ Is the dentist a relative? I can't laugh.

I believe that bad breath can be cured. As long as there's no gum disease or tooth decay, all the suggestions prescribed in this thread should eliminate the source of bad breath.

If there were no gum disease or tooth decay and the bad breath persists, despite all the these suggestions, it means it's an internal problem. Even the dentist can't help 'because it's no longer a disease of the mouth. The dentist will just refer you to a Specialist in Internal Medicice - Check the throat for throat cancer, the wall lining of the intestine for ulcer, e.t.c

Since bacteria is the main cause of bad breath you need to use methods to reduce their numbers.

1.Visit your dentist to make sure that tooth decay or periodontal disease are not present.  These conditions will increase the bacteria count in your mouth thus increasing your risk towards bad breath
Keep your mouth as clean as possible to remove the offensive order created by the bacteria

2. Consider the cleaning process as a "full-mouth disinfections" by focusing on all areas where bacteria may reside.  This disinfections involves:

Brushing-twice a day or more for at least two minutes

            Flossing-once a day

            Mouth rinse- alcohol free

3.Tongue scraping- Using a special tongue scraper, scrape your tongue with the scraper.  You can do this by making sure you reach the back part of your tongue, as far back as you can reach, and than with a light pressing action pull the scraper forward over your tongue.  Repeat this procedure until you have scraped the full surface of your tongue until all debris is removed.  Do this twice a day and follow it with a mouthwash, rinse or gel.

4.Rinse vigorously during the day with an ALCOHOL-FREE mouth rinse like BreathRX.  Avoid rinses/mouthwashes that have alcohol and lauryl sulfate ; these can dehydrate your mouth, damage gum tissue and encourage the development of bad breath.
Chewing sugar free gum for no longer than five minutes (to reduce your risk of developing TMD) to decrease dry mouth by stimulating saliva production
Avoid coffee, which is a heavy mouth-dryer
Drink lots of water through out the day to increase saliva flow which help to dissolve sulfur compounds.  This is especially important while exercising heavily, pregnancy, or during menstrual periods
If you have dry nasal passages or a dry throat try using a saline nasal spray
Breath spray/drops that are sugar free can be used throughout the day
Stop smoking or chewing tobacco.
Crown and bridge dental restorations provide more areas for bacteria to reside, so they require through cleaning with interproximal brushes, floss holder and floss threaded

Do try as much as possible to avoid

1.Excessive mouthwash use, this produces sloughy, bad smelling tissue that is worse than you breath!

2.Breath mints, long lasting sugar candies subject your teeth to acid attacks and increase your risk for cavities

3.Chewing gum, it only masks bad breath

4.Mint chew tobacco, smokeless tobacco causes gums to recede and increases the chance of losing the bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place and can cause oral cancer.

5.Infomerical items, use items that have the ADA Seal of Approval. Unapproved items could do more harm than good.

6.Alcohol, will cause dry mouth causing bad breath.

7.Brushing with cleanser, it is poisonous and dangerous, don't laugh people do do this!

8.Intestinal cleansing methods, bad breath does not originate from the stomach.  Anaerobic bacteria in your mouth produces bad breath.

9.Using mouthrinses with alcohol, dries out gum tissue and only covers bad breath it does not deal with the cause.

hope these tips are helpful.good luck to u, oh sorry i meant 2 say 2 ur pal

Brush your teeth and tongue first thing in the morning and before you go to bed at night
Minty chewing gum helps too

Nigeria has good medical system if u have the money. i pulled my first tooth at an nnpc clinic when i lived in nigeria. On the other had, bad breath can be caused by sensitive gum. Some people r born that way and a few medications can help but might never totally go away. It will help it not smell as much and at the same time help prevent the gum from being reddish i know this because my papa is a dentist. But there r other reasons too but i am sure a dentist will help.
