Homophobia: Fear of Homosexuality or Homosexuals
« on: September 23, 2005, 12:33 PM »

The anatomy of a homophobe.....

While going through the newsletter our dear [Administrator] sent to me today, I discovered that the topic "Like Will Smith, Would You Consider an Open Marriage?" was on the hot list so I did a little research on the matter and I came up with some very interesting issues one of which was the issue bothering on homophobia.

Now I ask, who is a Homophobe?  What is his/her motive and drive?  Why act this way?  Can we find traces in ourselves?  I thought this would make an interesting discussion so let's hear it folks.

The term "homophobia" is constructed from Greek όμοιος (homos), same and φόβος (fobos), fear. It has two meanings. The less common or literal meaning is "fear of the same". It is, however, almost exclusively used in the alternate sense of an intense aversion to, or disapproval of, homosexuals and/or homosexuality, bordering on the irrational.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia

ho·mo·pho·bi·a
   1. Fear of or contempt for lesbians and gay men.
   2. Behavior based on such a feeling.

Thanks 4 providing us with the dictonary meaning of the word but the question is "who is the person?"  His he or she your wife, teacher, preacher. brother, lover or friend??? Is the act excusable of accepted and if not, what are the disadvatages and (or) advantages??

The term homophobic can be applied to anyone who has a fear of homosexuality.  It is meant to be directed to those who have a fear of it just like one who is afraid of spiders or heights.

Now I see the term used moreso towards those who flat out disagree with the act.  This is using the term out of context.   Those who may accept the person but do not agree with the act and those who dislike it altogether [the person and the act] are now considered homophobic.  If the term is used like this, anyone may fall into this category.

I really don't see what "homophobia" has to do with "open marriage".

he dictionary already said it's been afraid of people with the same sex. This is just like saying someone is not for Lesbianism, or homosexuality. Some of people say they are "alergic" to same sex... i guess that means they are homophobic. I don't get why one would be afraid of someone with the same sex.

In the regoin were you reside, same sex marriages are permitted in some states and while Jada Pinkett-Smith was recieving a certain award, she made comments on the open marriage issue between her husband and herself which some perople felt had certain tendecies. She was therefore termed as been homophobic and that brought about this issue.

So let say you boyfriend is Homophobic and your best friend is gay. What happenes next? Does he stop seeing you because of your friend or he kill's ur friend because of what he is or ur Brother was homophobic and .............. u understand?? What are the risk factors to a situation or belief/feeling like this one?? That the issue !!

Ps. I also read that most repubicans have homophobia...

Not true, generalized statement.  Anyone can be homophobic, not just a certain "group" of people.

What I don't quite understand is that "phobia" is used when speaking of a fear, not a hate.  A person who kills another because they are a homosexual would make them a murderer, not a homophobic.

If your boyfriend stops seeing you because you have a homosexual friend makes him discriminatory, not a homophobic.

It's interesting that they would label Jada a homophobic because of the comments she made.  Do you know what she actually said?

U have to understand that phobia=fear=fright=defence=attack which can lead to serious injuries or death.

Also, it is a know fact that people fear what they don't underestand and they hate that which they can't conquer so if we have to judge by this, The homophobic will dispise you bacause of your association with someone who he see as having behavorial parrterns that he might never understand.... U dig??

I can dig it.  I thought of lack of understanding=fear=irrational behavior after I posted my original comment.

But there are some who accept the person, but do not agree with what they do that are still labled as homophobic.

Those who have time to worry about homosexuals, are just jobless yahoos Huh.
Get on with your own 'intriguing' lives and leave the homos to the private sanctity of London's public toilets.
Peace and love to all! Grin

please tell me how homosexuals affect you personally. please tell me how people that practise anal sex in the privacy of their own home, affect you personally.
I don't believe either affect me at all. Homosexuals do not influence my life in anyway shape or form.
I respect peoples right to 'free dominion of their own lives'... when it does not affect me.
Their is nor will there be any price to pay for homosexuality, by those that do not impose themselves in other peoples personal business.

Intriguingly awaiting your retort. Smiley
