Why Is Nigeria Backward?
« on: August 03, 2006, 11:31 AM »

What do u think is responsible for our backwardness in Nigeria or Africa in General.

I wonder where we (Nigerians) were when the rest of the world were busy discovering and inventing, maybe we were sleeping or have not started existing then.

I don't think its only the leaders that are bad, an average Nigerian or African is bad

well if the leadership is bad the followership will definately be bad too. The whole system is rotten from the top and can only be sanitized from the top

Why killing, how do that help? That is how they killed Funsho Williams. what about schooling the people for a change.

@omonozozo

this people are old cargoes and don't need schooling, infact they very educated more than u and me.
we have tried dialoguing and its not helping matters. old bones are hard to bend!
what in my opinion wil solve the problem, is revolution, a little shedding of blood like mandela. without this, we will still be where we are and funsho has got absolutely notin 2 do wit this let's leave d dead and deal will those living

Re: Why Is Nigeria Backward?
« #7 on: August 03, 2006, 01:49 PM »

leaders r the cause of our problem. but thinkin about it oh if our leaders change r we nigerians ready to change? government will say don't litter yet u ll see nigerians litterin all over the place and u can see that litterin is also one of our problems!! i don't knw if any of u hav  been to onitsha. so we shouldnt blame our leaders for everthing its also nigerians or africans in general that need to change.

Re: Why Is Nigeria Backward?
« #8 on: August 03, 2006, 02:21 PM »

@luvlymoi

exactly my point. d problem is not really the leaders but all of us in Africa including u and me.
even a baby is corrupt. if u want 2 go c ur b/f or g/f and hv a litu sis/bro, if u don't giv them biscuit, dey will tel mumy but d moment u promise them vanilla icecream u hv their vote of confidence. is there really a solution 2 all this in afirca? 'because i think our problem starts rit 4rom embryo level

@ Aleroaruya

Revolution is good, but do not have to involve shedding of blood. It can all take place in our heads.

Re: Why Is Nigeria Backward?

Because of bad leaders.

Colonization and the therefore the lack of patriotism has made people selfish.

Nigeria and Africa in general is backward because it's foundation is highly faulted.

but we have to look beyond this to move forward. Identifying the root of the problem is the first cure of this disease called african countries. The next step is repositioning ourselves in global affairs and we should find a way of improving our relevance and reducing our dependency. We need to think for ourselves and refuse leaders that are dogs to the west. We need leaders that would have the interest of the people at hearts.

maybe if there was a good leader to straighten things up most of the things will be going the way it suppose to go and many talents will be discovered but when there is no job no money nothing and allo everyone is doin is just to survive what do u expect

@alero
Fine people are corrupt , and lawless but can u stop and ask your self if there is any rule of law. When a driver on the street drives carefully on his lane and some lame ass governor or government official drives carelessly with an escort and disregards traffic laws, do u expect this same person to be lawlful next time .
see ehn people are tired and frustrated. They have no one to look up too. The country is in such a state that people believe there isĀ  no rule of law so they can for example kill funsho williams and nothin is going to happen.

we are backward because the leadership which ordinarily should chart a course of honesty,vision and unity for the polity has failed to address dese salient issues but concentrate on acrimony,corruption and whipping up of sentiments. ghana (our neighbour) is advancing in leaps and bounds ahead of us while we keep on with our rigmarrole

that is part of our backwardness, religion and education.
dangote prefers to give scholarship to people in Lagos than give to those in kano (his place of birth) so that the next time he goes there, the uneducated youths come out to do 'rakar dede' for him and when he does something wrong they just wont have the guts to stand up to him 'because they depend on him for food.

i have been to kano and the situation there is very pathethic, the governor was a school teacher but since he became governor he has not done any single thing for the youths (education wise), all he did was form a millitant group in the name of religion

you think Nigeria will ever be one country with patriotism when you have 3 large groups roughly with different religions, ethnicities and native languages? Only  brute dictator like Saddam can hold the country like ours together, there is no clear majority or dominant culture in Nigeria, we have different groups with deifferent agendas and different beliefs. Nigeria was a fabrication of the British, it was never meant to be a country.

But anyway Nigeria is backward because its foundation is backward. There is no "first world" nation on this planet that has the kind of secterian divide that countries like Nigeria have. You cannot have the North majority moslem live with south and easter groups who are majority Christain, all with different ethnicities and cultures. A Nation needs a dominant culture and pride and nationalism that can never be derived from the mishmash of a country we have now.

One thing I still stand to be corrected,  Most Nigerians don't want a break up.

on this site the votes proved it, on the streets it is the same thing, it is about leadership and it values.

I think why Nigeria is backward or black generally is that we don't want to leave our comfort zone.

We can live in the same house for 20 years driver the same car for 20 years, where the same cloths for forever.

We don't like change, afraid to take on challenges.

We are losing our values fast, Thieves are honored on the TV, giving chieftency titles in there villages by their chiefs.

Bad guys are taking over everything we do, they are becoming the Kings, L G chairmen, Senators, Governors etc.

When you have guys that are interested in personal gains, don't expect much results of a change.

And if we make the wrong choice 2007 be sure to post this topic in 2015

a people get leadership they deserve. The reason we are backwards is because of visionless leaders and the reason we have visionless leaders is because the populace who should determine who governs them allow it.
