You guys should quit dissing the laudable efforts by companies to set up an e-payment system in Nigeria  Angry One would think developed countries like the US and the UK didnt go through the same learning curve (online fraud) when these services were being introduced. In fact, these scams still occur as we speak in these developed countries, is it because a lot of noise is being made by the US about Nigerian online scams? For chrissakes, its because "they've been there and done that" so they know what to look out for.

Its going to take trial and errors to get it right in the Nigerian context but pending that time, there are other alternatives which are undoubtedly expensive. The reason being its just being introduced into the Nigerian market and these companies are trying to recoup their investment. This is the exact same scenario with the gsm & cdma networks, look at their prices now! They're literarilly giving their sims out for free!  Grin

And while we wait 4 naija's ecomerce to develop, why not get a US non-resident acct, order 4 your own platinum Visa card, link it to paypal to get verified & do biz with ease. It's very easy n legit.

Dissing them is a good way of encouraging them actually  Wink
Developed countries went through learning curves and whoever gets it right first laughs at the other "slow comer"
Since they have "been there and done that" then nigerian companies don't have to do much then, they should implemet it, when theres a vaccine for malaria you don't ignore it to start formulating you own medicine from scracth!
criticism is good!

I must admit that the starbicpay online payment option is a brilliant idea. We can all gradually welcome an era or influx of online business that will be focused on serving the nigerian population without the usual fear of scams and all. Hears a herty cheer to the brains behind it.

The fact that Nigeria is still developing in the E-commerce sector does not necessary mean that we should not work on the existing payment gateways and e-commerce platforms. Talking about E-biz in Nigeria, I don't think this in any will be possible if there is no seriousness attached to the issue of Payment Gateways and E-commerce. One problem I foresee present in the existing payment gateways is the high cost of registration of users, their conditions and commissions. This is really malling the effort of the development of E-Business in Nigeria.

I also  think we should work towards making free online setup a reality for Naira Web pay.

As in all things business folks, it's about monetization.  Add a little twist for the Nigerian factor with respect to "mafia"-tization and product delivery to the mix too.

If I don't see how to make money off of anything, why would I be motivated to do that thing?  This is where hard numbers come in - how many people presently surf the net in Nigeria?  How many of those people hv had a desire to actually buy something online?  What's the demographic of such surfers?  What would such people like to buy? etc.  That is why I will always say I like America: they have statistics for everything, including how much vapor you excrete from your nostrils on a sunny day in march at 2pm (probably not, but you get where I am going with this, I hope)  Tongue

In a country like Nigeria where we like to chop in a highly profitable area alone, if there is someone who could enter the market much cheaper, will the likes of interswitch et al want such a competitor?  Besides, I have had this conspiracy theory in mind for a long time: Interswitch is backed by paypal in disuguise  Cool

Okay now, assuming we have 1001 online payment solutions right this very minute, how will the garri I order from a company in Kogi State get to me in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State?  What of if I suddenly realize that I don't want the goods and/or want to return it?  Have we thought about that?  This issue isn't mutually exclusive.  Both online payment and delivery go hand-in-hand.

In conclusion, let's not be troubled by the likes of interswitch.  Remember, at a time only First Bank was processing Western Union transactions.  Now, not only are there other banks, you also have moneygram and probably a host of others.  Eventually, online payment will be everywhere.  It's just a matter of time.  However, for it to happen, we will need leaders and not followers.

As always, my 2 cents.

I am not bothered about Interswitch and their over-priced entry fees. When real competition hits them, they'd lower the ridiculously high fees. Remember that erstwhile Econet and MTN starterpacks cost as high as =N=35,000 when the GSM networks debuted in Nigeria. Today, how much do the starter packs? About =N=500.

All this clamour for payment system and credit cards!
Lets face it, even if we had world accepted credit cards in this country, in fact even if you have your own foriegn card as most of you do, you will fond out that most international marketers will NOT ship goods to Nigeria! complements of the yahoo yahoo boys.
The only ppl still shipping are those that have not fallen 'mugu' yet. notice the word yet!
How much more to trust ourselves? Its all about TRUST, INTERGRITY, HONESTY and ability to stand by a 'money back guarantee'!
So where do we stand?Huh

How about selling the prepaid visa or  mastercard in Nigeria. That will help pay for on-line services.  You don't have to have a bank account to get it. The only major thing it will require is to  have a branch in Nigeria affiliated  to mastercard or visa so we can reload the card anytime we run out off cash.

Another major thing is to write a simple code that transfer dollas value to naira and vise verser just is case you run a website that deals with naira.

This will help until we develop our own on line payment system

On more observation please,

how come you see all the websites refered to in this thread are all either half baked, undone, still in beta stage or simply do not have relevant content despite their name?

I think all the sites are owned by ppl who have just completed a course in web design and suddenly feel that they can put up any site online with free software!
Most site are just down right rowdy and as a potential customer you dont even know where to start.

Now what do we realy want? Are we looking to be able to pay for goods and services in Nigeria with Naira or are we looking to buy things from outside the country?

If we want Naira service for Nigerians in Nigeria, then I think you need to check out this site http:/www.softpay.org
Simple and to the point.

please dont register yet, as I have not registered because I would like to get the bonus from you as a refferer.
So pls wiat for me to register first then I will come back to give you the link so you can be under me. Howzzat?

So you have actually been a victim. ha! Well what can I say?
How bout 'One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch'? I know a method that is not HYIP, will give you plenty cash,  not millions as most promise, but loads! and guess what? you only have to spend less than a grand(naira!) You know the best part? You don't have to pay your money to any company so no mastermind somewhere ripping you off! Yes! its real, it works, its here in naira, not *@#~|e-gold !
What are you waiting for? Mail me now for the details (saletrade@ymail.com) Trust me you will wonder how you managed without it since.
My brother used this system to get money for his flight to come to london! With this system I don't send money home anymore insead they just take from my account there!
Anyway, curiosity wont kill you, no harm in knowing the details, just send mail saying 'please tell me more' to saletrade@ymail.com and your on. No looking back, no shaking,  lol.

Yes Bug24,
It is one thing to look yet another to see.
It is one thing to listen, yet another to hear.
Only the diligent will seek, and of those who seek yet, few will find.
Not all info is for general consumption.
To get to the point, the letter is too long and detailed for a forum like this.
To be honest, I dont want to bore those that have not the interest.
The info is free and will only benefit those who act on it, and of course myself.
(why else would anyone send you free info? ,   Wink )
On a serious note thogh, everyone will benefit, even those in America.
as well as them back home.
The word is 'TRY'.
Peace.
(I'll be looking out 4 your mail >> saletrade@ymail.com)

cost of maintenance u said? cost of electricity and what?
Now,  take it this way,
u are a cab driver charging N200 to a particular destination and everyone keeps begging u with N120,  u keep saying "NO" and you are still headed towards that same destination with an empty car,  isnt this foolisheness? madness? craziness? what other name?

Ain't you burning the same fuel?

InterSwitch should think well. and bring down the setup cost if they really want online thangs in Nigeria to grow.
