Tips For Maintaining Braids by PTBNaija(f): 8:06pm On Aug 03, 2006
Hey does anyone have tips for maintaining your braids? Things from washing and drying to moisurizing.

Especially because I wear braids a lot, and I hate how it's hard to comb my hair out when the braid comes off. It probably has something to do with how I wash my hair, but any ideas on how to prevent this too?
Re: Tips For Maintaining Braids by iice(f): 7:49am On Aug 04, 2006
I knw what u mean o, i wear braids alot 2. Hmmm i tend 2 never carry my hair more than 3months coz it will start locking and the combing is really painful, i also use a spray just 2 keep the hair moisturized so it doesnt dry off. Thats all i do cheesy
Re: Tips For Maintaining Braids by WesleyanA(f): 11:55pm On Dec 03, 2006
don't take out all of your braids before combing. comb each braid individually (in sections).

always start at the top/tips and work your way down when you comb.

use some mosturizer/oil so it doesn't break off from being too dry (never comb your hair when it's dry)

leaving braids in for 3mths is bad. angry never do it again (i do it sometimes. lol )

don't do single braids all the time. once or twice a year is enough if you want to keep your edges.

don't use cheap shampoos or anything that contains alcohol.

Re: Tips For Maintaining Braids by WesleyanA(f): 1:49am On Dec 21, 2006
thanks @funketobi and TOH smiley

try to stay away from products that contain petrolum aka grease. you can use a little on your braids to make it shine but don't use it on your scalp. they're cheap but . . .

pink oil, sulfur 8 (spray for braids) = really good for braids obviously. lol I don't know much products that work well.

Re: Tips For Maintaining Braids by neelsel(f): 6:42pm On Jan 22, 2007
Just did the micro because Lord knows am tired with this head of hair. Anyway the first couple of days I had migraines from the tightness. Just recently noticed some whitish things have began forming at the base of the braids, so I have been using " Organic root stimulator air oil" in my scalp, and "Perfect for perm hair oil" in the braids. Also I sleep in asilk scarf at nights. Next week I am planning on having them washed in a quest to maintain them longer.

@fellybabe,
Micro braids are not meant to be carried for longer, The last one I had on stayed 4 months!!

The one I have on now is really micro-mini. this is the 2nd month and I never even start. I no go sit for two days, then remove am after 7 weeks.

WesleyanA:

never heard of that.

They got them in Naija too. I saw some last holiday at the market in warri, still regret why I didn't get them.

Re: Tips For Maintaining Braids by abbygirl: 3:00am On Sep 27, 2007
winkThe best way to remove micros's: wash hair before removing them with motion shampoo and condition. apply the shampoo before wet hair. then you wash the shampoo , may have to do it twice. then condition, wash out and then take down while wet, carefully. it's quicker too! and your hair will not knot up while you are taking them down. After you remove all the braids, wash with a tangle shampoo and condition.

Tips for maintaining braids and cornrows:
• Always make sure your hair is properly washed and treated with deep conditioner before putting in braids and cornows.
• Do not use heavy hair cream, this tends to weight your hair down, causing build-up and flaky scalp.
• For your comfort, select a style that is appropriate for your hair length and texture.
• Do not leave your braids in for more than eight weeks at a time. As your hair may begin to lock causing severe breakage.
• Put your hair in a silk or satin scarf before going to bed at night to avoid frizz.

I am actually not a braids person, but since i started transitioning to natural hair,i've done a lenghty kinky n am goin for cornrow next.D micro or mila braids is a no no 4 moi.
Re: Tips For Maintaining Braids by sammyjl(f): 1:32pm On Mar 09, 2009

Re: Tips For Maintaining Braids by Sissy3(f): 2:15am On May 29, 2009
i use a medicated spray conditioner for braids with olive oil, jojoba oil, shea butter and t-tree. it helps with the dry scalp, dandruff and itching
