Is "trying" Good Enough?
« on: August 04, 2006, 03:30 AM »

By the time this thread is locked, it would have gathered more posts than the one about Ngozi's resignation Grin

So, I have this conversation with Nigerians in Nigeria (NIN).  It goes along the lines of me saying that Nigeria has a long way to go in terms of development.  The response I usually get back is of the nature "We are at least trying now.  Y do you and others abroad always say negative things about your motherland?".  In other words, they make me look and feel like a traitor.

Is there anything wrong with me pointing out that having electricity for, if at all, 6 hours a day is absolutely bad, as opposed to saying, "we are trying".  In essence, I ask - when will Nigeria stop "trying".  I don tire o!  Me pointing out the negative doesn't make me any less Nigerian.  As I tell the NINs, I am probably more Nigerian than they are.  I just have been blessed with the opportunity to see things from both sides of the pond.

It is either we have 24 hour power supply, for example, or not.  Let's stop this "we are trying" crap, because we have been "trying" since at least I got there for the first time in 1980 and we have been "trying" ever since.

Again, am I smoking the wrong kind of crack?

Let the replies begin to flow Grin

My3cents?

i understand you. Its like most nigerians believe those of us in diaspora have suddenly abandoned home. I remember when i first started my blog
virtually all my friends in nigeria were so "is it because you are now outside nigeria that you are now bashing it" thingy. the truth is most nigerians in diaspora are more vociferous because they know that Nigeria has the human and material potential to be greater than many of the countries we call home today, many of us would pack up and go home at the slightest opportunities and we have seen what is required to make life better here. ITS SIMPLE! it does not take a magician to fix things, these oyinbos have just one head like us! What is wrong with us?

It is not about "tying", we've been trying before my grandfather was born but things seem to be getting worse, why?

Abeg u guys talk true, i have had certain instances when someone tried 2 bash me for some negative comments, plz view things realistically and practically.  I love my country but truthfully its just a mess.  Yes oh as davidylan pointed out, we have been trying since before and things are not getting better.  Let me stop here, be back 2 see whats up

Banana republics try; nations genuinely committed to development accomplish.
