According to experts, N1b has been lost due to closure
WHICH EXPERTS???did they tell you how much lagos state losses every day/month/year due to tax evasion?and did they tell you what you are loosing by this evasion?? @ cabali, stop barking at the wrong tree. Tell our leaders to pay there taxes first, it's called leadership by example. When they pay there taxes then the followers will too. They don't pay tax or utility bills, government offices owe PHCN more money than private users combined.
you cannot pay tax when you are a debtor, tax is paid when u credit an account, government owes government, private owes private, tax retrieved on payment.please go to computer vill and collect a phone without paying u hear then pay tax!! , u need tax lectures dont u?

There is no need to fight over the issue of tax here in this forum, we should accept the fact that the right thing to do in any situation that affects human economy is dialogue, both parties should come together and work out a solid and agreed plans to sort the issue for the progress of the state

Everybody wants something good,a better country,a better environment.a better living but nobody wants to pay the price.Even the village women and men pay taxes.how much more in the city. When the citizens are going the wrong way and the government retaliate everybody open teeth and shout the government is bad.but when it is the reverse the citizens are good.imagine it is this same your igbo and yoruba brothers and sisters that queues up at the embassy just to leave the country to another mans country where he pays tax through his nose and he doesnt complain.but to pay it in his own fathers land he is shouting.and for those who calls fashola a drop out have u considered that despite the fact that you are the investor of books and fountain of knowlede there is a problem with you 4 a dropout to be ruling you and if you can do better why havent we seen your face even in the newspaper.nawa fellow nigerians change your menatlity if u call your governor a drop out yet he knows about paying taxes how much more you an elite why didnt you educate you brothers and siters why they have to pay theier taxes if they dont know.

I wonder what we have been able to achieve in Lagos after the closure of the market. The real thing our so call SAN was able to achieve was that he now has money to share among his friends for the ILEYA and CHRISTMAS celebration and some fools are saying EKO ONI BAJE. Let’s face the reality we have not gotten any leader who think about development in our country I am not saying that we should not pay TAX but what are the benefit of the tax that we pay? I asked a friend 2 days ago when she showed me her tax clearance certificate if she has benefited from the tax paid in Lagos and her response are as follows: - I have to wake up very early in the morning so as not to get to the office late and I have to pay extra for doing that. - I have to pay extra when I am coming back home just because there is congestion caused by bad roads. - On getting home there is hardly light from PHCN. That the worst of it all is the bad road that you have to experience before getting home e.t.c. That is someone that pays tax. Please let’s get things done the right way. Our country is rich enough to put all this things in place and then everybody can pay their tax if they are enlightened enough that the tax is going to the used for maintenance.
Tax is good but let’s put the social amenities in place first just like the developed worlds are doing. I have the following questions and needed help to understand 1. Who are the people expected to pay tax? 2. Are the graduates that do not have jobs also pay tax? 3. How do I pay the same tax as my friend that earns like 3 times my salary? 4. Should students also pay tax because they school in Lagos. 5. If yes where should they get the money from? 6. Should robbers also pay tax at least they have a job at hand.

My friend what do you mean by undergraduate. So if u are an undergraduate and you make money of some sort of business in a state you are not suppose to pay tax?
well mayb you dont know any better; I suggest you go read off abt tax and stuff, then you will understand. Who taxed students and where did u hear that?
How can you ask if robbers should pay tax? is that a legitimate job? should they not be arrested?
In fact why am i wasting a post on this??

Tax is good but let’s put the social amenities in place first just like the developed worlds are doing.
Tax is also meant to provide financing so social amenities can be put in place. The problem is we in lagos have been paying taxes but so far, it seems the money has not really been used to provide the people the expected amenities and so I, like you, am wary of paying more taxes, without some assurance that this time the money will go to good use. I have the following questions and needed help to understand 1. Who are the people expected to pay tax? Technically, everyone ought to pay taxes. I use the word 'technically' as I believe that is how tax ought to work, but I prefer that what we have be a solution tailor-made for Lagos, that works best for us. 2. Are the graduates that do not have jobs also pay tax? Technically, you do not pay taxes if you are unemployed. 3. How do I pay the same tax as my friend that earns like 3 times my salary?
It should not be that way. 4. Should students also pay tax because they school in Lagos. 5. If yes where should they get the money from?
well, if they can afford to( say the student owns a business), then yes, but if not. I would rather. I went to school with some wealthy students oo. 6. Should robbers also pay tax at least they have a job at hand.
They better pay!! roflmao!

This is arrant nonsense from all these yoroba, hausa and other nigerian minority folks. When it's to kill Igbo people by any means, that's what unites you foolish nigerians. Until other yoroba dominated markets are closed on such unfortunate excuse, then you people can come back here to talk. As for now, this is pure and complete witch hunting of Igbo business, trying your other means to check mate the ever expanding Igbo Business.
Asking people to pay tax by force of closing their shops where you don't have a serious tax collecting system in place is nothing but pure insanity. Those of you using America and Europe as your comparison, have you ever asked yourself why tax payers in those countries rush up to pay their taxes instead of waiting for their IRS to come asking for it? Have you ever seen anybody who in his whole sincere most heart is ever willing to pay taxes?
You can claim there is, but fact is there is not, but the solid systems in place makes it possible for people in those countries to pay up their taxes or face the law. Yet under such solid and tight tax collecting systems in those countries, there are still people evading and finding their ways through it and successfully avoid paying taxes. In those countries you are blindly using as comparison, every official registered businesses, how ever big or small must have their own accountancy office where they are affiliated to and this is by law and they pay this accountancy office at the end of the month. The job of this accountancy offices is to account for everyday sales of their customers who are these business shops, industries and so on.
Some accountancy offices might have up to 20 business shops under their care, this in turn makes them to employ more workers. Such is part of the job creation that you porous heads in nigeria doesn't know about. You have fresh university accountant graduates roaming your Lagos streets without work and all you idiots are here hailing your fashola for closing down Igbo businesses. Each an everyday, this accountancy offices knows each and every sales that their client's selling machines recorded for the day.
All the sales receipts are turn in to those accountancy offices on daily or weekly bases depending on your agreement with your accountancy office. The accountancy office in turn is responsible for calculating your everyday business sales and turning in the record to IRS which in turn sends you your tax bill for the month. Now, don't pay and face the IRS music. Do you see that IRS don't deal directly with business owners, rather they deal with your accountancy office. Now, i am giving example about holding the little business shops accountable for paying up their taxes. Check out how many accountancy offices that will spring up in Lagos if every shop is forced by law to be affiliated to an accountancy office. Check out how many fresh graduates those accountancy office will employ and finally check out how easy it will be to collect taxes from those alaba shoppers.
What makes these accountancy offices attractive in those countries to have them account for your business is that they will also in turn help your business to grow. You don't spend unnecessarily when you know that someone is counting all the money you made in your everyday sales and that tax will be deducted from your money according to the account he made and presented to your country's IRS and not according to your own very account which "must" have cheating inside it against the government.
In those countries you are quick to blindly use as comparison, no registered business does their everyday sales account by themselves. It is not allowed by law. You must be affiliated to an accountancy office that does your everyday sales calculation and you pay them for their services. Check out how many accountants such offices will employ in your nigeria if such rule is being used other than sending yoroba alayes in uniforms with tax office receipts in their hands to invade Igbo shop/businesses in the name of collecting tax. That is not an efficient way of collecting tax from anyone. Don't expect anyone to pay you tax through such way.
All of you opening your dirty stinking mouths here, have anyone of you or your parents and siblings ever paid tax at anytime or the other in nigeria? Tell your almajiri government in connivance with their yoroba servers to copy the American and European tax collecting systems and put it in place in your rotten country nigeria and lets see how people are going to evade taxes. In those countries, we hear that so and so individual is being hunted by the tax officials, not a whole group of people and their businesses. You people are claiming to be blind to read the wicked writing on the wall because it involves Igbo people and their businesses.

To boomtowner and yemmyse,
I choose to stand by what damola1 and Sam Milla said. Are you telling me that no one has ever responded to the notice he gave?. Why didn't he fish out the defaulters and punish them or lock their shops, instead of closing down the entire place. He must be your uncle or your your sugar daddy for you to support such acts. Or is he the new George Bush in Nigeria. The so-called governor should first of all do an enlightenment programme to have those traders sensitized. I think he lacks the rudiments of good leadership.

Civilized my arrsss. Because you all were doing what you knows best, that is ganging up here in support of illegal closure of Igbo shops in the name of tax collection which is purely illegal. When it's anything against Igbos including hacking them to death, that's when you all nigerians unite in your so called civilization. Anythign against Igbos is the major thing that unites you all. You can disguise as much as you want, i know the motives behind all of you posts here. What your fashola is doing is completely illegal. No sane people goes about hounding it's supposed citizens and closing their shops in the name of tax collection. That is idiocy at it's best. Ewu, where do you expect them to pay the tax to and how much do you expect each an everyone of them to pay before you and your fashola will get satisfied. Is it on fixed rate or pay as you earn as it's done in serious countries? Have you thought about first setting up solid tax collection system? Ohh sorry, your collective porous head doesn't know about that. All you know is kill them kill them, bring down their businesses because they are Igbos and they grow at a pace that is beyond your comprehension. Are you blind that you didn't read my comment about about how tax is supposed to be collected which is also on the locked up thread? I was not around initially and that's why you fools have the time to gang up here in bashing Igbo business men and supporting your fashola's illegal way of tax collection. Someone even called him a lawyer. nigerian lawyer anyway. What does he know about proper way of tax collection. Nonsense.

Cabali I don’t understand why you have to see the truth and still stick to your blind ways of interpreting the situation of the country. You seem not to understand what this whole issue is rather you just jumping here and make noise. Anyway I no blame you cos know you are just making believe that you pay tax. If you do disclose your identity and scan that your clearance certificate that proves that you have been paying tax for the past 2years. anyway learn that nobody is saying don’t pay tax but what we are saying is that what do you get back in returns if this is the way your democratically elected leaders believes things should be done. Put the tax system in place and let’s see if it would work or not. Those people in the village one way or the other are multi taxed by this same government let them ask their brothers (agbero's) to leave the people alone so that they can have money to pay for their tax. take time and visit the village and see how they are multi-taxed, in the morning they pay "owo-aro" in the afternoon they will still pay "owo-oson" and even in the evening they will still come and collect the same money called "owo-irole" and still the local government will come and ask you to pay your lock up shop fee and also your tenement rate dues so tell me how you think those people will feel when they know they don’t have to pay all this stupid boys and just the government. We should be talking about solutions and not defending the wrong doings of out blind government. Let’s proffer solution that is if they border to hear. One of the treads assumed that their next target is Alaba: well maybe they should take time on the issue and find a better way of allowing people to pay their tax like providing a place for them to pay their tax right there in the market square and should not make the same mistake they made with the village.
And lastly it’s not about tribe in here. So it’s not about hunting the Igbo people

I have no real issue with paying tax. In fact so many developed societies were built on monies accruing from paying tax. What i have problem with is the actual utilization of this taxes. Nigerian Government - at all levels - have failed us in that aspect. The vigour with which they impose or enforce taxes should be commensurate with the level of development, PERIOD.

I find that it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth, when I see a government headed by Fashola doing this. But then again, why am I angry? Fashola WAS Tinubu's Chief-of-Staff for quite a few years, and would have been privy to the wanton looting of public coffers and the state's resources that was perpetrated by Tinubu. Heck, how do we know he didn't partake of it sef?
All this clamour for people to pay their tax is a bit rich, coming from the Chief-of-Staff of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, self-styled Governor Emeritus of Lagos, who is still taking his 10% cut from every naira people pay into the coffers of Lagos state, whether as tax, C of O fees, Stamp duties, planning fees, market levies, development levies, LASTMA fines and so on. And he is apparently doing this through Alpha Beta Consulting, which is owned by Tinubu through proxies.
Another reason why I might not be inclined to support this action is because the public works going on now are heavily loaded in favour of, yes, you guessed it, Bola Ahmed Tinubu again!! This is because the Chaghoury's are his partners in a number of construction firms, including Hi Tech, which "won" the contract for the expansion of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, and several other contracts around the state. Also include ITB in that list, as well as Palmyra, all Chaghoury companies in which Tinubu has a huge stake, and of course, not to forget the sale of Lagos State's stake in the Eko Hotel group to the same Chaghoury's, supervised by, yes, you guessed it, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
So, while some actions of Fashola are commendable, including but not limited to, the beautification of Lagos roads, rather than their rehabilitation, I will not follow anyone blindly to canonise a governor because he is at least pretending to do his job. I'm more interested in results. I painfully witnessed the idolisation of Tinubu over a period of 8 years of unbridled corruption, executive laziness and lawlessness (the emasculation of the local government tier of government in Tinubu's time, cleverly disguised as a creation of more local governments, comes to mind, with agencies like LAWMA, LASAA and ideas like the Land Use Charge, which basically take away constitutionally guaranteed sources of income for the Local Governments - a direct VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION) of his government, while also observing the ignorance of our people, who hailed that drug-addled charlatan at every turn, jeun soke baba!!
The result after 8 years, compared to Jakande's 4 years in a more austere time for Nigeria (Lekki-Epe Expressway was constructed by Jakande in that time), is there for all to see:
Area Boys rule - like MTN, they are everywhere you go, at the market, collecting money from poor, hard-working Alaaru's, on the roads, dressed up as LASTMA or Man-o-war, or not dressed up at all, just collecting money from motorists and motor-cyclists alike, and Marwa had gotten rid of them!!
Bad roads, everywhere. Never mind the re-construction of Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, which took ages, and only takes care of the richest in society, the reconstruction of Gerard through to Bourdillon (where Tinubu lives) and Lagos Island roads, which are not really as useful anymore, since Tinubu's area boys chased all really big business away from there, save for a paltry few.
Everywhere else is bad, with a capital B.
And Fashola is closing markets, as if it's not bad enough already. He really should be careful, because when you create unemployment, the unemployed must eat somehow. Crime went up in Lekki peninsula when the sand-mining on Ado Road was stopped. I predict a massive rise in crime in Ikeja, due to the closure of Computer village, which will be nothing compared to the number of criminals that will be created from the closure of Alaba International Market.
I am Yoruba, Lagos indigene, and I appeal to Fashola to reconsider these closures AS A MATTER OF URGENCY, for Lagos was built on trade, and if people cannot trade anymore, due to draconian and militaristic actions of government, Lagos will DIE.

When people run out of ideas, like dlox01 clearly has, they resort to personal abuse and irrational behaviour. Witness his riposte to my earlier post:

U really need to attend Tax seminars and brush up on your fundamentals of tax, because what you have coated is out of context,Tinubu cannot get 10% of everybodies naira.i don't have time to lecture u now but please stop showing off your stupidity with your alpha beta consulting.

u are a retard, Lagos is way too big for a singular person to own everything.you take alook around u,theres more to be done dan just lekki express way and eko hotel, the worlds richest man did not do lekki express way o,think very well, the person that impacted on his people the most dint build a road,u have to pick yourself up and think of something to do because i can sence a pour of helplessness in your statement

Replete with the kind of language and warped logic that we have now come to identify with Tinubu and his co-travellers, his reply FAILS woefully to address the issue. He instead wants to drag this important matter into the gutter. Sorry, Mr dlox01, I'm not going there.
Instead, my reply goes thus:
I can provide you with evidence that Alpha Beta Consulting IS skimming off of the levies and fees we've been paying to the Lagos State government since the advent of Tinubu, and until today. I can, if you want, also provide evidence linking Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the said Alpha Beta. If you would like that, I can provide it anonymously in this public forum, and everyone will be able to check the facts out for themselves, because I will lay bare where the facts can be obtained.
You accuse me of running my mouth. Have you considered that the reason Tinubu dribbled all the party faithful to install Fashola is because Fashola is privy to ALL his atrocities, and being so inured to them, will not be shocked at all. Heck, he helped perpetrate some of them. You can start with Royal Gardens Estate, Ajah. Find out who the owners of Trojan Estates Ltd are, and you will see a clear trail to you-know-who.
Should I also discuss herein the little matter of the ILLEGAL transfer of state property to himself through 3rd parties to himself by Tinubu? Check out number 4, Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi. Used to be a Lagos State Government Guest House. Guess what's happened to it???
You call me a retard for stating that Tinubu has more than a passing interest in Hi-Tech construction company, ITB and other Chaghoury companies, but I see you have not actually disputed that fact. Telling, isn't it?
I also notice that your rants somehow failed to address the issue of clear violations of the Constitution, first by Bola Tinubu, and now by Babatunde Fashola, only focusing as usual, on the trademark of Bola Tinubu, personal insults.
Finally, I beleive that everyone should pay their tax. I have always paid my taxes, and still do, no matter what country I find myself in. Her Majesty's government can testify to that, I believe. However, I do not believe in keeping quiet when I'm obviously being CHEATED by the operators of government.
I want to believe that Nigerian, nay, Lagosians are not as stupid as you and your sponsors think. We may be timid, afraid for our lives, since we do not want to go the way of Funso Williams, but we are not stupid.
I'm glad that you mentioned in your rant that people want free death. Are we not at least entitled to die for free, even if every breath we draw must be paid for, in your warped world-view? Of course, not according to you and your sponsors, Tinubu and Fashola, hence the odious and incomprehensible "Coroner's Law" that was recently "enacted" by our rubber-stamp legislature, which makes it impossible for us to bury our dead without paying a massive penalty to the coffers of Lagos State and Tinubu.
May you and your ogas die unsung. May you all die horrible deaths and have no one to mourn over you. Oloshi. Ooo mo eni ti ooun ba fa ni??? Omo eko Gidi!! Ko ni ragba fun iwo ati awon oga e dede. Oun ti e so eko da ni o ma pa yin. Eyin apa omo won yi. Awon akotileta omo, afoju ni gbogbo yin.

When people run out of ideas, like dlox01 clearly has, they resort to personal abuse and irrational behaviour. Witness his riposte to my earlier post:
I find that it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth, when I see a government headed by Fashola doing this. But then again, why am I angry? Fashola WAS Tinubu's Chief-of-Staff for quite a few years, and would have been privy to the wanton looting of public coffers and the state's resources that was perpetrated by Tinubu. Heck, how do we know he didn't partake of it sef?
your right how DO we know he DID??do u have your facts??don't start running your mouth on weak foundation, how do i know u are not one of the people that looted with tinubu??
All this clamour for people to pay their tax is a bit rich, coming from the Chief-of-Staff of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, self-styled Governor Emeritus of Lagos, who is still taking his 10% cut from every naira people pay into the coffers of Lagos state, whether as tax, C of O fees, Stamp duties, planning fees, market levies, development levies, LASTMA fines and so on. And he is apparently doing this through Alpha Beta Consulting, which is owned by Tinubu through proxies.
U really need to attend Tax seminars and brush up on your fundamentals of tax, because what you have coated is out of context,Tinubu cannot get 10% of everybodies naira.i don't have time to lecture u now but please stop showing off your stupidity with your alpha beta consulting.
Also include ITB in that list, as well as Palmyra, all Chaghoury companies in which Tinubu has a huge stake, and of course, not to forget the sale of Lagos State's stake in the Eko Hotel group to the same Chaghoury's, supervised by, yes, you guessed it, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
u are a retard, Lagos is way too big for a singular person to own everything.you take alook around u,theres more to be done dan just lekki express way and eko hotel, the worlds richest man did not do lekki express way o,think very well, the person that impacted on his people the most dint build a road,u have to pick yourself up and think of something to do because i can sence a pour of helplessness in your statement
So, while some actions of Fashola are commendable, including but not limited to, the beautification of Lagos roads, rather than their rehabilitation, I will not follow anyone blindly to canonise a governor because he is at least pretending to do his job. [b]I'm more interested in resultsmention what he has endulged in and u have not seen results. I painfully witnessed the idolisation of Tinubu over a period of 8 years of unbridled corruption, executive laziness and lawlessness (the emasculation of the local government tier of government in Tinubu's time, cleverly disguised as a creation of more local governments, comes to mind, with agencies like LAWMA, LASAA and ideas like the Land Use Charge, which basically take away constitutionally guaranteed sources of income for the Local Governments - a direct VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION) of his government, please what constitution?which one said it was wrong for the government to create agencies?quote, while also observing the ignorance of our people, who hailed that drug-addled charlatan at every turn, jeun soke baba!!
Never mind the re-construction of Obafemi Awolowo Road, IkoyiMIND it o because na money them use build am no be free, which took ages, and only takes care of the richest in societyhave u steped or driven on that road??if yes, that would mean u are either Rich or that road isnt sevicing the rich alone!! the reconstruction of Gerard through to Bourdillon (where Tinubu lives) and Lagos Island roads, which are not really as useful anymore, since Tinubu's area boys chased all really big business away from there, save for a paltry few.
Everywhere else is bad, with a capital B.thatz for you
And Fashola is closing markets, as if it's not bad enough already, closing with a reasonPAY your TAXES.
I am Yoruba, Lagos indigene, and I appeal to Fashola to reconsider these closures AS A MATTER OF URGENCY, for Lagos was built on trade, and if people cannot trade anymore, due to draconian and militaristic actions of government, Lagos will DIE.there are states all over the world built on trade my friend, tokyo japan is one n they are structured n pay tax, computer village and alaba is not in anyway greater People like u just want Free, FREE FOOD FREE EDUCATION FREE MONEY FREE LIFE FREE DEATH JUST FREE FREEEEEEEEEE, EVERYTHIGN IN LIFE COMES WITH A PRICE TAG!!!GO AND PAY your TAX AND SHUT UP!!!
I disapproves to comments by people like 'Damola' and 'quotasyste'. Tax, in any country, helps regulate prices for commodities. These 'traders' at computer village and every other major markets in Lagos are just inflating prices of products, making excess of profits and keeping every peny of it for themselves. Whether there was notice or not, getting tough on tax has to start somewhere, someday! It is every trader's responsibility to read and know of his/her rights even before he/she starts trading, we'll all be able to criticise government when we have documents to prove our contribution to the society.
