Entire Computer Village Shut Down Over Tax

There is no need to fight over the issue of tax here in this forum, we should accept the fact that the right thing to do in any situation that affects human economy is dialogue, both parties should come together and work out a solid and agreed plans to sort the issue for the progress of the state

Everybody wants something good,a better country,a better environment.a better living but nobody wants to pay the price.Even the village women and men pay taxes.how much more in the city.When the citizens are going the wrong way and the government retaliate everybody open teeth and shout the government is bad.but when it is the reverse the citizens are good.imagine it is this same your igbo and yoruba brothers and sisters that queues up at the embassy just to leave the country to another mans country where he pays tax through his nose and he doesnt complain.but to pay it in his own fathers land he is shouting.and for those who calls  fashola a drop out have u considered that despite the fact that you are the investor of books and fountain of knowlede there is a problem with you 4 a dropout to be ruling you and if you can do better why havent we seen your face even in the newspaper.nawa fellow nigerians change your menatlity if u call your governor a drop out yet he knows about paying taxes how much more you an elite  why didnt you educate you brothers and siters why they have to pay theier taxes if they dont know.

I wonder what we have been able to achieve in Lagos after the closure of the market. The real thing our so call SAN was able to achieve was that he now has money to share among his friends for the ILEYA and CHRISTMAS celebration and some fools are saying EKO ONI BAJE.
Let’s face the reality we have not gotten any leader who think about development in our country I am not saying that we should not pay TAX but what are the benefit of the tax that we pay?
I asked a friend 2 days ago when she showed me her tax clearance certificate if she has benefited from the tax paid in Lagos and her response are as follows:
- I have to wake up very early in the morning so as not to get to the office late and I have to pay extra for doing that.
- I have to pay extra when I am coming back home just because there is congestion caused by bad roads.
- On getting home there is hardly light from PHCN.
That the worst of it all is the bad road that you have to experience before getting home e.t.c.
That is someone that pays tax. Please let’s get things done the right way. Our country is rich enough to put all this things in place and then everybody can pay their tax if they are enlightened enough that the tax is going to the used for maintenance.

Tax is good but let’s put the social amenities in place first just like the developed worlds are doing.
I have the following questions and needed help to understand
1. Who are the people expected to pay tax?
2. Are the graduates that do not have jobs also pay tax?
3. How do I pay the same tax as my friend that earns like 3 times my salary?
4. Should students also pay tax because they school in Lagos.
5. If yes where should they get the money from?
6. Should robbers also pay tax at least they have a job at hand.

Tax is also meant to provide financing so social amenities can be put in place. The problem is we in lagos have been paying taxes but so far, it seems the money has not really been used to provide the people the expected amenities and so I, like you, am wary of paying more taxes, without some assurance that this time the money will go to good use.


Technically, everyone ought to pay taxes. I use the word 'technically' as I believe that is how tax ought to work, but I prefer that what we have be a solution tailor-made for Lagos, that works best for us.


Technically, you do not pay taxes if you are unemployed.

This is arrant nonsense from all these yoroba, hausa and other nigerian minority folks. When it's to kill Igbo people by any means, that's what unites you foolish nigerians. Asking people to pay tax by force of closing their shops where you don't have a serious tax collecting system in place is nothing but pure insanity. Those of you using America and Europe as your comparison, have you ever asked yourself why tax payers in those countries rush up to pay their taxes instead of waiting for their IRS to come asking for it? Have you ever seen anybody who in his whole sincere most heart is ever willing to pay taxes?

You can claim there is, but fact is there is not, but the solid systems in place makes it possible for people in those countries to pay up their taxes or face the law. Yet under such solid and tight tax collecting systems in those countries, there are still people evading and finding their ways through it and successfully avoid paying taxes. In those countries you are blindly using as comparison, every official registered businesses, how ever big or small must have their own accountancy office where they are affiliated to and this is by law and they pay this accountancy office at the end of the month.  The job of this accountancy offices is to account for everyday sales of their customers who are these business shops, industries and so on.

Some accountancy offices might have up to 20 business shops under their care, this in turn makes them to employ more workers. Such is part of the job creation that you porous heads in nigeria doesn't know about. You have fresh university accountant graduates roaming your Lagos streets without work and all you idiots are here hailing your fashola for closing down Igbo businesses. Each an everyday, this accountancy offices knows each and every sales that their client's selling machines recorded for the day.

All the sales receipts are turn in to those accountancy offices on daily or weekly bases depending on your agreement with your accountancy office. The accountancy office in turn is responsible for calculating your everyday business sales and turning in the record to IRS which in turn sends you your tax bill for the month. Now, don't pay and face the IRS music. Do you see that IRS don't deal directly with business owners, rather they deal with your accountancy office.  Now, i am giving example about holding the little business shops accountable for paying up their taxes. Check out how many accountancy offices that will spring up in Lagos if every shop is forced by law to be affiliated to an accountancy office. Check out how many fresh graduates those accountancy office will employ and finally check out how easy it will be to collect taxes from those alaba shoppers.

What makes these accountancy offices attractive in those countries to have them account for your business is that they will also in turn help your business to grow. You don't spend unnecessarily when you know that someone is counting all the money you made in your everyday sales and that tax will be deducted from your money according to the account he made and presented to your country's IRS and not according to your own very account which "must" have cheating inside it against the government.

In those countries you are quick to blindly use as comparison, no registered business does their everyday sales account by themselves. It is not allowed by law. You must be affiliated to an accountancy office that does your everyday sales calculation and you pay them for their services. Check out how many accountants such offices will employ in your nigeria if such rule is being used other than sending yoroba alayes in uniforms with tax office receipts in their hands to invade Igbo shop/businesses in the name of collecting tax. That is not an efficient way of collecting tax from anyone. Don't expect anyone to pay you tax through such way.

All of you opening your dirty stinking mouths here, have anyone of you or your parents and siblings ever paid tax at anytime or the other in nigeria? Tell your almajiri government in connivance with their yoroba servers to copy the American and European tax collecting systems and put it in place in your rotten country nigeria and lets see how people are going to evade taxes. In those countries, we hear that so and so individual is being hunted by the tax officials, not a whole group of people and their businesses. You people are claiming to be blind to read the wicked writing on the wall because it involves Igbo people and their businesses.

You seem not to understand what this whole issue is rather you just jumping here and make noise. Anyway I no blame you cos know you are just making believe that you pay tax. If you do disclose your identity and scan that your clearance certificate that proves that you have been paying tax for the past 2years.
anyway learn that nobody is saying don’t pay tax but what we are saying is that what do you get back in returns if this is the way your democratically elected leaders believes things should be done. Put the tax system in place and let’s see if it would work or not. Those people in the village one way or the other are multi taxed by this same government let them ask their brothers (agbero's) to leave the people alone so that they can have money to pay for their tax. take time and visit the village and see how they are multi-taxed, in the morning they pay "owo-aro" in the afternoon they will still pay "owo-oson" and even in the evening they will still come and collect the same money called "owo-irole" and still the local government will come and ask you to pay your lock up shop fee and also your tenement rate dues so tell me how you think those people will feel when they know they don’t have to pay all this stupid boys and just the government. We should be talking about solutions and not defending the wrong doings of out blind government.

How can i pay tax,when i know the money will be squandered

And he is apparently doing this through Alpha Beta Consulting, which is owned by Tinubu through proxies.

Another reason why I might not be inclined to support this action is because the public works going on now are heavily loaded in favour of, yes, you guessed it, Bola Ahmed Tinubu again!! This is because the Chaghoury's are his partners in a number of construction firms, including Hi Tech, which "won" the contract for the expansion of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, and several other contracts around the state. Also include ITB in that list, as well as Palmyra, all Chaghoury companies in which Tinubu has a huge stake, and of course, not to forget the sale of Lagos State's stake in the Eko Hotel group to the same Chaghoury's, supervised by, yes, you guessed it, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He really should be careful, because when you create unemployment, the unemployed must eat somehow. Crime went up in Lekki peninsula when the sand-mining on Ado Road was stopped. I predict a massive rise in crime in Ikeja, due to the closure of Computer village, which will be nothing compared to the number of criminals that will be created from the closure of Alaba International Market.

I can provide you with evidence that Alpha Beta Consulting IS skimming off of the levies and fees we've been paying to the Lagos State government since the advent of Tinubu, and until today. I can, if you want, also provide evidence linking Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the said Alpha Beta. If you would like that, I can provide it anonymously in this public forum, and everyone will be able to check the facts out for themselves, because I will lay bare where the facts can be obtained.

Finally, I beleive that everyone should pay their tax. I have always paid my taxes, and still do, no matter what country I find myself in. Her Majesty's government can testify to that, I believe. I disapproves to comments by people like 'Damola' and 'quotasyste'. Tax, in any country, helps regulate prices for commodities. These 'traders' at computer village and every other major markets in Lagos are just inflating prices of products, making excess of profits and keeping every peny of it for themselves. Whether there was notice or not, getting tough on tax has to start somewhere, someday! It is every trader's responsibility to read and know of his/her rights even before he/she starts trading, we'll all be able to criticise government when we have documents to prove our contribution to the society.
