Reading peeps talk about the great nigerian club of old is nostalgic to say the least, I can one ever forget the rivalry of old when the FA cup(challenge cup) as it was called then was of significance. Imagine a match between Super Stores(Collis Ebitimi a.ka barb wire) and the Flyin antelope(Rangers of Enugu) that had Hillary Azodo then. Ebitimi man-marked Azodo to the point of wanting to go to the dressing room with him Leventis Utd(Andrew Uwe),BCC Lions of Gboko;Edema Fuludu,Moses Kpakor, one of the best man marker naija ever had @ club level.Ahmoudu sure did have the remedy for the Northern Club then and his reign @ the cup winners cup was wonderful. What about some of some of our players that was plying their trade in some neighboring countries and had the dishonoo of scoring against some of naija clubs. The name Friday Ekpo readily comes to mind.He was playin for a Gabonese club then(cant remember the name now) and scored against one nigerian club then and thus eliminating the said nigerian club. What of Abiola Babes,a club financially backed by the pillar of sport himself before his demise and reputed for not winning most of its matches when Abiola is present in the stadium.Raymong King,Bode Thomas,Yisa Sofoluwe to mention a few were great players that graced the Nigerian league then

Now all our major players and budding talents are rightly playing oversea as beyond the passion for the game, man must wack i was a staunch supporter of Concord FC and i travel from Lagos to Abeokuta to see games at the Muda Lawal Stadium on weekends. One of those days i nearly got myself killed when stationery stores ( my darling club) came to Abeokuta and after conceeding a goal unleashed mayhem on the entire metropolis. My support shifted to JB when Concord was disbanded and its so painful im left with Gateway FC now. Although, i dont go to the stadium again, i still take delight in listening to scores on Mondays. Let the truth be told, the Nigerian league used to be interesting

The core of Nigerian players were playing for the various clubs then and you can not but want to watch and follow the clubs then because of one or two players. I was a sootin fan too before the advent of BCC lions and they stole my heart away with the way they always dealt with the northern club then. They just seem to have the antidote to them which erstwhile was elusive. I know Vigilante Insurance professional (VIP) and Obanta Also Nigerdock had a stint I was addicted to Sootin' and it pained me when they lost their relevance.

The way you guys are analysing Nigerian league of 80's to 90's like EPL of today really surprised me. I can also remember following Nigerian league in the period 1995-97. But today, I don't even know which club is in Division 1 and which is Division 2. Learnt Shooting star relegated some time ago, have they come back to Division 1?
I so much find Nigerian league uniteresting that anytime they are showing the matches on Supersports, I just tune on.

I have a friend (a graduate) who has been to every flying eagles camp since 2000. He was 20 as at 2000 & was told at the time to try out for u17 instead. Anyone remember Victor Brown of 2001 U17 fame. I saw this dude in a Jasper united shirt (continental match) as far back as 1995. He must've been 11 or so then.

Nice analyses of the glorious days of Nigerian football. Though was young then, Amodu's BCC Lions of Gboko readily comes to mind. The duo of Moses Kpako (Now an Assistant @ Lobi) and his brother, Terfa Kpako comes to mind.
Over the years, the packaging has been so bad that every talent ships himself abroad to join the rat race. However, I still every to lay my patroitism to bare by watching the Nigerian Premier League. Men, the it stinks. Imagine putting on your DSTV n the flicker that welcomes you is blur. The commentary:
1st commentator: Eh eh eh ( followed by loud cough) that is Yaro of Kano Pillars. eh eh em em imagine his height
2nd Commentatator: yes yes yes he reminds me of Peter Crouch of Chelsea when d lanky tin was in liverpool

I think Chief Lekan Salami is more fanatical that Baba Eleran. In late 70's, while at Liberty stadium watching sutin's match, news came in that one of his son is dead. He just told them he cant leave the stadium until after the match. Sutin to the core While chief Elekuru (aka Baba Eleran) mobilises the Danfo Drivers, mechanics, the market women for 3SC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/4374879.stmIt was very exciting in those days.

I feel so old right now. I must have been 8 in 1996 when sooting won the local league, I was 9 in 1997 when they played against Zamalek in the finals. I remember watching all that stuff on NTA and BSOS, I still remember Fata Ogundeji, Feyi Ogunduyile, and all those sport reporters back then. I had a female relative (I think she was my mother's cousin). I always stayed up at till 2/3am to watch games with her, she must have been my first older crush.
I remember the finals and how 3SC lost the penalties, I think Baruwa missed a kick too. I also remember the Patricks, sooting had about 3 patricks at that time if I'm not mistaken, Patrick Pascal, Patrick Mancha(sp?) and one other Patrick I can't remember.

I sorry for the Yak, maybe he'll be back again or maybe not is not a topic for today (We'll know about that in 7 months).
This thread has been very interesting and l enjoyed reading every piece of article on it, but what really caught my fancy is the way you guys have been analyzing the Nigerian league of old.
To be sincere some of you guys were mentioning back in the days when my popsy go put on baggy try to dey make pass at my mama, dem no even no say dem go marry, not to talk of still being together today, the backline of this is that l wasn't even born when you guys were talking about.
Talking about Shooting Stars, l was at Onikan Stadium last Sunday to see them beat Union Bank, the match ended 2 - 3 in favour of the visiting Shooting. One thing that stands out through out the match however was the way the Ibadan folks who had come with Shooting on the away trip to Lagos sang all through the encounter even when Union bank was leading 2 - 1 at half time. The passion with which they sang and dance was definitely in contrast to Union bank supporters who were definitely being paid and sponsored to rout for the team.
The passion with which the Shooting entourage sang made me leave the VIP stands where l was sitting with my friend to go to the popular side and sit in their midst, we sang and danced together to the tune of their traditional drums and songs.
The match is the second l have gone to see at the stadium, but l can tell you l really enjoyed my time out even though l have to monitor my club match (Chelsea) via my mobile phone for the two times l have been at the stadium.
Please lets cultivate the habit to go to the stadiums to watch the local league, whenever we can or at least when we know the foreign club we support have a game they will obviously win, we can spend the day at our local stadia. l have no club l support locally but l look forward to making up my mind on which one to support and l have enjoyed both matches l have gone to see.
Lets join hands to make our local league great again, its possible to still support them with the passion l noticed in the earlier posts of this thread.
Long Live The Nigerian League.
P.S
The match this weekend in between Julius Berger and Dolphins of Port Harcourt, it will take place at The Onikan Stadium, l will be there by the grace of God.

The Yak is certainly not finished. Yakubu like most other Nigerian players understate their ages by , He has his faults on the pitch (unwilling to get involved, loses concentration, unmotivated especially for Nigeria, sometimes lazy) He has more strengths , a good goal scorer, an excellent passer of the ball, assists more than he scores (this is one reason he gets called up to the Super Eagles). Yakubu will recover. He is not a player to ignore even though we have better attackers like Uche, Osaze, Nsofor, Yakubu is certainly the better goal scorer compared to these guys (records speak for themselves). I wish you a quick recovery Yak. Nigerians we should learn to be objective about our people and criticise appropriately. Yakubu I have observed is the most hated Nigerian player today. He has scored more than most people realise, 18 national team goals so far, Martins, Aghaowa, Kanu, Amokachi are all under 15. So hate him less please
