Accidents and Carnages on Nigerian Roads
« on: May 11, 2005, 12:25 AM »

I travelled to Akure last week and there was this ghastly accident that happened along Akure-Owo road, 25 people including 3 Corps members lost their lives in this accident involving a Mercedes 911 and a Toyota Hiace 18-seater bus.

What was the cause of the accident?
A herd of cows crossing the road, and over-speeding drivers ...

I wonder why these cattle rearer guys roam about with their cows along express roads?

Unfortunately, this is just one of the many accidents that has been occurring of late.  I even had a bitter taste of this while I was travelling to Akure along Lagos-Ibadan express road, our Mercedes Benz E-class got crashed in a multiple accident involving about 10 cars caused by a tractor trailer with failed brakes.

What's are the causes of these accidents and how can they be reduced?

What a pity! What an avoidable lost of lives!

Well Mamba, you have already identified the first two of the causes of road accidents, which are:
- A herd of cows crossing the road irreverently
- Over-speeding
Others are:
- Bad roads
- Drunken drivers
- Vehicle not in good shape or not roadworthy
- Lack of adequate road signs
- Incessant check-points on the road by the Police
- Inexperienced drivers and
- Carelessness and wanton disregards of safety regulations while on the road

How can road accidents be reduced:
It is a joint efforts by both the government and drivers on the road.
- Let the government take good care of the roads through regular repairs and maintenance.
- Let every vehicle owners make sure their vehicle is roadworthy by proper servicing and maintenance.
- Let the drivers behave responsibily while on the wheel. They should not do anything that will endanger other road users or their passengers, and they should obey all traffic laws.
- As for the nomad people or cattle rearers, the government can deal with them, if they have the will and political muscle to do so.

Last week Thursday, I had an accident in Abuja while I was coming back from the bank to withdraw some money.

Along central mosque in Abuja, the road that leads to Tofa House after the bridge, I was supposed to past through NNPC back to my office, because I work in NITEL.  So I passed through the middle lane with a Honda Civic.  I was about to divert to NNPC when the the policeman asked me to go straight and not to divert or else I will be arrested.

So I passed through Grand square.  After Grand square, the next thing is for you to divert back to NNPC, and there was a car before me that was 307 first class while mine is a Honda Civic.  And you know what it means if I bash first class car.  I tried all I could not to bash the 307 (thank God for that).

After the 307 has left, leaving me at the junction, I had already passed before I noticed a car coming with a very high speed and it bashed the back of my car.

So please tell me who was at fault.  Thank you.

Are you sure your brake lights were working?
If your brake lights were functioning then It's the guy that bashed you that's at fault...

Two of you were probably overspeeding because you tried to avoid a collision with the 307 so it's still partially your fault too sha!
