From Amby Uneze in Owerri, 12.02.2008
Suspected hoodlums from Oforola in Owerri West Local Government in Imo state numbering over 200 at the weekend stormed the premises of the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Owerri and destroyed property worth several millions of naira.
The rampaging youths also allegedly carted away some property of the institution, thus forcing the college that reopened recently to close down temporarily while the students were asked to vacate the premises.
According to the Provost of the institution, Ucheagwu Mbanefo, the youths destroyed the college's auditorium, information block, tanks, blocks, rods and cement.
Said he: “The auditorium was razed, the information block, tanks, blocks, cement, rods were carted away by the community we are trying to develop. We are discouraged, but we are forging ahead. Government has come to develop. The people are completely opposed to development. It is the handiwork of enemies of progress.”
Registrar of the College, Solomon Akande, the monarch of Obosima community, Eze Paulinus Onyeukwu Chukwuneye and some elders of the area told journalists that the destruction is a setback not only to the institution and the community but to the educational sector at large.
Meanwhile, the institution’s authorities have reported the matter to the police, while calm has been restored in the college.
