Latex condoms offer protection. Latex condoms can be made weaker and, thus, less effective if used with an oil-based lubricant (such as petroleum jelly, hand lotion, cooking oil, lard, etc.). It's also important to be sure that fingernails and/or teeth do not puncture the latex.
If the sexual activity in which you engage is vigorous enough to tear a condom, perhaps you might wish to slow down, lighten up and modify your technique.
Bottom line: Be careful when you're being careful.
