Interesting how excited everybody is about this. Why not just purchase a real refubished laptop for the same price? http://www.pcsurplusonline.com/ has laptops for as little as $59. But then again, shipping to Nigeria may not be so easy.

Stones instead of Bread?
Recently this headline caught my attention: “A LOW-COST LAPTOP FOR EVERY CHILD - Effort to link world’s rural poor to Internet with $100 computers gets boost from U.N.” Shivers went through me. Over the years, my wife and I have traveled to more than two dozen Third World countries and have seen children struggling with unbelievable obstacles—hunger, disease, and countless other ills. Amazingly, these children were happy with the little they had. Certainly they needed help—but not low-cost laptops, as trumpeted by the headline I referred to above. That would be like giving stones to someone asking for bread.

you've all had a good discussion so far, but mind you if you notice what has been said about this so called laptops, you'll see it's for kid, they kept repeating children, children, to use for their studys in school maybe in learning ABC, 123, and change the power source every 10 mins. i can as well assure you that this toy won't be lesser that $300 when it first gets here cos even 15 million production of this year will hardly serve lagos state alone, you know our population, and the few priviledged ones that manage to get it will want to sell X3 (u no, biz now). moreso, i believe, most of us here are no kids, u can't compare a p4 or P.M intel centrino, mobile technology laptop, that can handle projects like video & sound editing, macromedia flash, corel draw, 3d animations & games and so on, with a 486 sys if you know what all these means you will know that you dont have to wait for a coming toy before you get your sys, cos u'll be disapointed that it might not be able to handle what you wanna do. also, i can assure you if it is a computer of less than $100 that you want. you av a lot of them in ikeja and other places. its just dat Hi tech guys have passed that, and such sys can't handle our kind of jobs. hope u understand. so no point waiting, get what you need today and start doing something. if it comes i'll also buy it for my kid sister. a known devil is better than an unknown angel

what do you guys think you're going to get from a 100 box laptop: perharps a good memory or a good graphic card or a good processor or what !!! i ask. The computer is intended for nursery/elementary school children , stay off the topic of a $100 laptop, it's capital B/S.

What is the $100 Laptop, really? The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display—both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3× the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data. More at http://www.laptop.org/faq.en_US.html But too bad its not going to be produced in comercial quantities

its so funny how most of u guys love awuf well the laptop in question cannot be used alone as in it need some sort of mesh network positioned into the space & its not some type that u can just pop a cd rom into & start doin stuffs. Its a gadget or some sort of miniature of laptop not capable of any real job. I read it sometimes ago that those coming 2 west africa will run Wazobia Linux you know its an open source thing. So don't be this-illusioned. go 2 otigba wit dat amount add little money u'll bring home correct p3 pc. cheerio

Well, let me give you all the bad news It seems nobody has bothered to research on this laptop. It doesn't have a hard drive. Only four USB ports Has only a word processor, a web browser and one other thing I don't remember Bill Gates and Intel are dissing it badly And, It's not going to be available commercially.

fellow nija, below is the way we all shld thinking, " instead of diverting these laptops into the wrong hands. . .why doesn't someone figure out a way to make a similar one. Then, all you need to do is raise the start up capital to create a prototype and start production on it." we can come up with a cheaper way and paint every home with laptop. Nija might be on her way to compete with India, i beleieve we have the IQ, just infrastructure. this is one way the youths will stay steps ahead of 'porvaty legacy' our mindless politican wants leave for us. you can also check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimputerChinwe U:B.

They don't want it to be bought by individuals. They want the government to buy it and then give "for free" it to the children. How naive. If you prevent adults from buying the notebooks legally, they will obtain it illegally.
