Can You Wear A Bikini?
« on: August 14, 2006, 03:46 PM »

From mere observation, l have come to notice that many nigerian girls do not wear a bikini. Even in America and in the Uk, they still tend to cover up.  Why is that so? Is it that we are so shy to flaunt our body or what? This summer, l saw a lot of Nigerian girls going to the beach wearing top and short skirt or jeans and bla bla. It looked so ridiculous in that you can still get a nice bikini and look cute.  There are so many unique styles out there in the stores that tend to do a great deal of covering. Well, l don't know if it is just me that observed this this summer but the ball is in your court.  What do you all have to say about this? Huh Huh

Like you stated maybe they're too shy.  Even alot of Oyinbo's and African Americans don't wear bikini so it doesnt really matter.  Most people wear what they'D feel comfortable in, as for me I don't go to beach (theres somethiings I just don't want to see).

Hmmm like luvu said, they may be shy or self conscious.
Am a beach lover, go to the beach as much as i can, ma swim wear varies, but i tend to go with mostly little shorts/board shorts and bikini tops.  .guess i've seen basically all sorts of outfits, frm itsy bitsy strings(almost none existant) to the covered-upto-there ones, you don't even know why they're are even at the beach in the first place but na their own biz

Yes i can wear a bikini.

Nigerian girls. You act like u don't know them (US). I mean we are all shibbily shabby, shy shy outside. That is how it is. I mean, u know. . . wearing shorts and spaghetti top to the beach and watnot. If it's an inside house pool party, You'll see them with infact g-strings self. Because they are not OUTSIDE.

Then again, it depends on individuals u know?

I sure can wear a bikini. As a matter of fact, I love it. You got flat tummy, show it off. Ok, maybe not just flat tummy, but if you have a good body show it. Why go to the beach in jeans and t-shirt?

But this summer, I went with a one piece. More like an halter one piece.

whats up yall? i have followed your comments regarding wearing bikinis to beaches, well i've got one piece of advice for yall "Always remember the daughters of whom you are" You are a Nigerain with a predated culture of modesty, moral uprightness and religous principle be you a muslim, christian or freethinker. I have studied in the UK as a matured student (MSc level) and i tell u, don't decieve yourselves thinking we have the same culture with the Western civilisation, because we don't. And as per showing what you've got, please save it for your husbands no matter how long it  takes, its worth it.

i actually agree with ashiruabdu
lol me i have remembered the daughters of who am i and im not going to be wearing a bikini to the beach or the pool or anywhere that is not inside my father's gate.
i mean i totally get how a lot of people raised here or even peeps who came over will not see anything wrong in wearing bikinis but i personally find it a bit off. (lol i've got a great body oh)

so i guess the same goes for a lot of nigerian girls. added to what hot angel said they may be shy, but a lot of them also don't feel right wearing the bikini outside so they cover up. causing themselves to look one kin when everybody is half naked and enjoying sun.

so i only do private beaches with my rich boyfriend from dubai  Grin

I totally disagree with the division of countries. I don’t think it is a Nigerian thingy. Most people wear what they feel comfortable in. I can wear a bikini but I will rather go in shorts. Basically it depends on my mood. How I feel like at that point in time.

Yeah me i go with shorts most times, but i usually wear a bikini top, surfs up, tides high yay! And i wear them not because of culture or identity, it's what i feel comfortable in because am a beach bum, plus its easier to move in those clothes when i go diving or snorkeling.  But shooo wear wetin you wan wear, i've seen them all

yeah true but due to the surrounding culture and moral upbringing, naija girls are less likely to feel comfortable wearing bikinis and stuff. afterall environment does affect personality (abi how do they say it)

@twinkledew, how many times have you gone to naija and saw girls wearing booty shorts or short shorts or even miniskirt on the streets in a place like lagos oh (when it is really hot oh, not like a normal harmattan day or sumn) , talkless of ikere-ekiti? so it does have a lot to do with country. you don't expect someone from say qatar that has been covering up all her life, to come to yankee and start wearing bikini tomorrow (unless she was omo-ita before before lol)

but of course with the world becoming a global village times are changing. i bet if you went to bar beach now u will see a fair number of bikinis

Cool  . People don't wear bikinis to the beach in Nigeria, they tend to wear such to schools and churches. You must have missed them.

A good number of people here have said it's a Nigerian thing. It so isn't. Being able to wear a bikini, in my opinion, doesn't have to do with whether or not u'r Nigerian. I'm 100% Nigerian living in Nigeria and I'm as comfortable in a bikini as I am in clothes!

i think its a culture thingy not necessarily shy. those of y'all that were born here and been here all your life can afford to wear them bikini's and stuff outside without minding whats up but those ones that migrated from naija to this land know how it is. back home u don't do such so why come here and be the opposite of eve. not like they can't wear it if they wann@ is just that they already know where they come from and their culture down there so they usually don't feel like going against there culture. they can wear it in doors but they aint bringing it outside. its just like me now, u can't see me wearing any thing x10 my size or wearing them baggys and stuff. i were my shirt always. i even find it hard wearing a t-shirt but i got a few of them though. u can't see me going out tying them durages and wearing them crazy ass tank tops and some baggy shorts even sagging it. i can't do that cuzz i know where i come from and i know how it is. i aint gon do what i aint gon do in front of my peps at their back cuzz it aint fair to me or them. u gott@ know u got where u come from and u gon try as hard as u can to rep it.

i have seen girls in bikini that made me throw up and i have seen the same girls wearing them shorts and tops and i be like "damn mami u fineeee". the shy factor is little. its more of cultural background and what fits u best.

hum, anyways l feel ya all but am still disagreeing with the fact of chicks wearing shorts and bla bla to the beach. In that , what you are trying to hide, everybody has seen before. I mean you don't have to be naked but u can wear something sexy and cute.

Theory of retrogressive modernisation

Prehistoric times
Africans walked about with little more than leaves to cover up.
Oyibos clad themeselves heavily in all sorts of exotic fabrics.

Modern times
Africans cover up and dress exquisitely; even cover up on the beaches.
Oyibos bare almost everything; even in the offices, where mini skirts and eye-popping tops are the order of the day.

This is the thing about Nigerians that pisses me off. What does wearing a bikini and God's temple and religion have to do with each other. I mean, com'on, it is not like you are wearing it to go to church or mosque or walking on the streets. I believe there is an outfit for everywhere you are going. So, it will definitely be inappropriate for me to wear a bikini to say school and wear jeans to a pool.

Oh well, to each his own. When we all stop deceiving each other about all these you are a Nigerian BS and you are a daughter of BS, then we'll be able to progress.

If me, that I am rocking my bikini is a good girl inside-out and you that you refuse to wear one is a rotten girl, I wonder who is a using her temple well.

I could put my bikini pic here, but like someone said, I don't want to make you blind. My profile might have one.

Well, itz simply not a culture in Nigeria to wear Bikini because it feels like being naked,
imagine a girl going to bar beach just on a bikini, nobody might say anything but she definitely wouldn't feel comfortable probably because she's the only one on it or the way people will look at her

i even thought you were talking about the men wearing Bikini Grin Grin
