Hey all,
What's happening now. This thread must not die o.
By the way, nothing much is happening in Jarus' office. We are just trying to settle down after the recent top management Tsunami. New people, new styles. Series of meetings with new management team. Well, I was able to finalize my June accounts on Monday, and felt relieved.

Hello Peeps

The work front has been a mixed bag l8ly.

FYE was a moderate success for urs truly but i'm in no way looking forward to December cos
na "GUNFIGHT IN BROAD STREET 2009" na im go happenas we keep looking for innovative ways to capture your money as deposits.

Btw dem suckas @ Head Office r reviewing targets & rumour has it mine is goin up some 75%.
I just hope the mega profits we posted on the wake of the FX storm will in our Share-of-Profits cos omo boy don dey eye some assets for acquisition & its cash down for me no Consumer finance crap (na we dey run the 19 so i know all the pitfalls)

Anyways my game plan is to work a redeployment to one of em Head Office desk/brain jobs (though i go still get target, my field experience will give me an edge).

Anyways to all ma peeps i wish y'all well in your endeavors

Quote
Absolutely not a waste. You don't have to be a project manager instantly simply because you have a degree in project management. You could start off as a graduate engineer, do some project engineering roles and gradually build up the full set of competencies required to be a true project manager. Most people who lead projects do not do a qualification and simply step into the role - their credibility as project managers emanates from having done a variety of roles themselves before getting into the project leading role.

That said, it all depends on the type of project management you want to engage in. If you're interested in non-engineering projects then maybe you can seek a role in management consultancy, but I still feel that a grad engineer role will give you lots of opportunities to practice project management.

You can buzz me on  IM (name is in my profile) so we can talk further

Hey all,
After a rain-filled weekend, spent quietly at home with my inverter and 3 generators (my yard now looks and sounds like a factory!), we are back again for a tedious work-week.
This weekend was kinda expensive also. First, my wife's phone fell down in the yard Friday night, and all my neighbours took turns driving over it. Long and short is I need to get a new phone for her this morning. Secondly, after hours spent online hunting for cheap tickets, I finally went back home to good ol' Arik - only for me to now book the tickets all wrong. Now I am gearing up to shell out penalty fees (yes, it was one of those cheapest, non-flexible tickets) this morning. Na wa. All the good bargains eroded!
Anyways, I'm looking forward to a solid 4 weeks (Yay!) out of this gridlocked factory called Lagos, during which I shall detox and go 100% green.
As always, the trouble remains having to come back. God dey protect im pickins sha.

@tollu, congrats on your customer care gig, but make sure it's a stepping stone to better things o!

@diggler, lol. At this rate bankers would soon be sponsoring bank robberies, targeting other banks.

Rest of y'all, easy o.

wow! This is a cool thread! I hope I fit in as a new comer, on this thread and the cooperate world.

I am a newbie just starting up on my own haven decided not to join the labour market but to utilise my skills and common sense as a Computer Engineer, Network Engineer and Website Designer and a bit of management skill. lol, jacky you would want to call me  Grin! yea, I acquired the skills so I can put them to use on my own.

Now going with the thread, Today officially marks the beginning of my office and am still trying to put things in place since am starting up with the little I can afford but with great hope to get it up soon. Nothing much to do, just feeling the environment and going through some proposals so as to know where I can start from. Kinda boring though but I am good to go!

« #563 on: July 30, 2009, 02:17 PM »

@ajanlekoko
we'll you're off the mark there. . . the main reason is in the picture i posted below. . .(had to read through my archives to get that Undecided) it represents funding of the power sector, notice the military regime?

on the other hand PHCN is overstaffed(dont say i said so Grin) and underskilled so even when the needed stations are built it wont be smooth sailing!

P.S. in power u shld start building a power station at least 5 years before you need it! now y'all can just do the maths.(i'll help you, u're 20years behind)

now on to my office,
the internet has vanished(i know its grammatically incorrect Grin) the comms guy just says the hub is bad(i can bet 6months allawee i know more abt networking than him).he has an OND in mech production, how he got here i dont know, i like him tho. The HR manager's secretary has spent all of today playing text twist(i installed it on her computer Grin) the engineers are 'laying' at 'oputa panel'*. In simple english little or no work is being done.(today is my CD<community development> day i dont even need to be at the office)

*oputa panel is the proverbial waterhole where u meet to discuss the days activities only in this case most of the day is actually spent there (different generating stations hv different names for it though, i hear the one in jebba is called 'house of assembly')

oh and i hear they aren't going to pay us our PHCN allawee until the 15th of next month(it was due on the 24th)

Netotse, u r welcome on board. You haven't said anything new with regards to the power sector being understaffed. We all know huge amounts of money go in an abyssmal amounts of power comes out. That only points in one direction: The usual direction, CORRUPTION.
Hope u youngies would be allowed to pum in fresh blood into that place someday.

BTW Big ups to you for resucitating the thread.

Anyways bizness has been same same.
All sorts of rumours keep filtering outta Head office

today its Layoff, tomorrow its paycut and everything inbetween with a sprinkling of sex and the usual intrigues.

All in all i know we made some mad profit in the recently endeed FY but due to the new provisioning fad actual profits r gonna be messed up. (and yeah there goes my SOP & my 42" LG flat screeen plasma)

Plus i know since this is naija the Ogas r gonna find a way to abuse the provision concept.

Omo boy is initiating new deals especially those that'll line my pockets wiv some brown paper bag money, without defrauding the customers tho.

Hope all ma peeps doing good

It all depends on the pay o. They are looking at upscaling their IB unit and they are poaching and tapping awon young boiz around. Friday will be a day ill hit the camp ground God willing with my long list of requests ( one of the them is to win a lottery of 50million and resign Grin)

Roll on another new month. . .
In came a new head of discipline overseeing the Energy as well as the M&E Department. . . Dude got lured back from Dubai apparently!
Anyways, i have made it known to him, this dude is young and hungry. . . . . .and prolly after his job in the next 2 years! Shocked Grin
Pretty quiet at the moment to be honest, just spending time on innovative products and ground breaking technologies as well as existing PM's
M hoping to interface with other departments this month to give me a broad knowledge of the whole engineering consultancy business
At the same time, i am working hard on my own personal thing, liaising with foreign companies on the possibilities of a technical partnership
On the other job, preseason training has been gruelling, but at least i hope to be sharper and fitter than last season when i didnt get any
Season starts next week and i am looking forward, hopefully i will get playing time, coz not really feeling the coaching set up at the mo! Undecided

I hope everyone is doing well and the job aint stressing?
Keep it all up. . . .

Re: Welcome To My Office
« #575 on: August 04, 2009, 10:53 AM »

@Ajanlekoko
the guy's engineering is very sound, its his moral degree thats from oluwole. we have a number of very good ppl here(enough to do the work that needs to be done) but the dead weight outnumbers them and that slows business down considerably.

if the generation was there you guys would get it. . .for real o, i know ppl the go on leave during the load shedding periods just so they dont have to be the one to tell the discos<distribution coys-the ppl that control your light> to drop load(there's always this sadness in the control room during the serious load shedding periods especially at night).

on the lighter side sha its the only period when we can touch the feeder belong to the senators in apo quarters(do we make them suffer. . .lol) i rem during my I.T. one of the first things i used to ask when i resumed in the morning was "are those nuisances still in"(i.e. do they have light) if they were it was lights off till some1 from headquarters called to ask how far.

thing about operators(the ppl that decide who actually gets light) is that they are usu stressed at these periods(we once got a call from someone that said she was 'hajia' and she worked with yar adua<---ppl aren't even s'posed to have our operational numbers sef) or once we got a call from war college that "we should know its a sensitive institution"(there was a match on that night) we soooo didnt give them light(that night was especially bad the whole abuja was practically in darkness) during normal times(i speak wrt the neps) dem no born us well to try that(soldiers will just come and arrange you!)

simple and short there's a heirachy when it comes to who gets the meagre offerings that come from the generation stations(yeah yeah i know thats not the way its supposed to be). Large hospitals, important govt agencies, military formations and lastly operators(see def. above) etc usu get priority, i'll try and expantiate on this later sha(i can only talk from a transmission point of view, i need to get more info)

P.S. its not everyone in PHCN u can bribe to get light. when you're talking about ppl that collect bribes to give you light or not to disconnect your light thats distribution. transmission ppl have no idea/business with whats happening on your streets(we work on a far far larger scale) and generation ppl have no business with wots happening anywhere outside their power station.
