SHOULD POST-JAMB BE INTRODUCED

Viewers I would love to know your comment about this current Post JAMB that is taking place, at different Unviersities. Should it come to stay or we continue with the normal tradition (JAMB only). Or any other idea(s) you think about, say it out.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by cushman(m): 5:42pm On Oct 04, 2005
If a university in Nigeria is not satisfied with the quality of candidates JAMB offers admission to then let it carry it's own method of admission. I don't really see any harm in it.

UNIPORT has just finished their own post Jamb examinations. The results are mind blowing. Just about 10% of the population candidates made 50% and above. A lot of high scoring candidates 270 - 280 could only gather 20% - 35% yet in an interview with Rivers State Television the candidates all agreed that the exam was not difficult. This only shows the high level of malpractice perpetuated during JAMB\WAEC\NECO examinations in Nigeria. This is actually another form of corruption. Many of the candidates could not even write a simple essay.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by niceguy(m): 1:32pm On Oct 13, 2005
The university post ume is nothing but a money making venture. All candidate paying N2500 for bankdraft.
University of Port Harcourt set 80 objective questions and one essay. The time allowed was 1hour but they collected
everything from candidate in less than 30mins, so JAMB cannot be compare with what so called the aptitude test
because jamb will give you much time to write to ur satisfaction.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by sekamykome(m): 3:57pm On Oct 13, 2005
Thepost jamb to me is not a bad move, nevertheless, it too good after weighing the pros and the cons.
You know that Nigeria is a place of chances. There are chances of the registrars and VC to make a real fortune from this.
The good thing in it is that if one can score as much as 290 in jamb that is tough then come and score 50% in a very cheap aptitude test. That is what i see in it all but if i am asked wether to discontinue it or continue it i will say it should be continued..

@niceguy, which uniport are you talking of? I was involved in the post ume exams at university of port harcourt, which department did u say wrote for only 30 minutes? The results are out and those people who are good materials got 50% and above. In my faculty which is management sciences, our candidates were giving full one hour to write their exams. A lot of high scoring jamb candidates could only manage between 25% - 35%. The only problem i think we should consider is the fees being charged by the various universities which range from N2500 till N5000.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by niceguy(m): 10:23am On Oct 14, 2005
Otokx, Aptitude test or what so called the screening exams is not the best test of knowledge
allow this candidate to get admission and see their performances in the classroom, many of this candidate in
question left school for many years ago, and so their head is domain. The only reason I saw in this process
is that they want to take style and scare the poor man children from going to school, because those with a silver spoon in their mouth can still go to school without writing the test, even though they come out with a flying colour or not. we are
living in a country of bribery and corruption(NIGERIA) bigman talk to bigman understand.

I think the idea is excellent coolif it taking seriously and they concedrate alot off people but we all know that there is always a way out even if aptitude test is conducted or not admission is still sure for some student who never sat for the exams.imagine the unilag test over 50,000 student took the test mean while they only need 6,000 student both 04/03 and the recent jamb so what are we  talking here... i think it luck and money that can get you to school here and some of this student that sat for unilag exam are already in school e.g"osu, efe and co but because they just want to got to lag.......as for jamb there nothing they can do about it cause they wrote there that if schools are not satified with the scores they should test them in the insittutes......and i will ask the special centers to canceal and start with schools special centers cause they cant sell anymore with JAMB....  cry

Well people that did not know the birth of JAMB quickly rise up and say post UME test is the best that has happened to education in Nigeria in the recent time but not at all.

In the efforts of FG to ensure that admission into universities in Nigeria is fair and just, relevant guidelines like marit, catchment area, educationally disadvantaged states were introduced in 1978.
through decree (act) No.2 of 1978 and amended by decree (act) No.33 of 1989 which established JAMB, joint Admissions and Matriculations board.

After the success of JAMB in conducting a criditable exams, additinal responsibilities was given to them to conduct exams for Polytechnics and Colleges of Educations. And due process was followed.

Now Universities have not been empowered to conduct Post- UME test, such test which some universities are now conducting before placement, to me is null, void and unconsistutional.
Before the post UME test should take off, it is either we scrap JAMB or amend the relevant act since JAMB will no longer be the final authority in the placement.

The fees charged by some of these universities are alarming. It shows education is now Plc in Nigeria.
If JAMB is scrapped, then the Universities can return to status quo ante and admissions will be based specifically on the immediate environment which describe here as "regionalism in education" especially in federal universities.

If post UME test is not urgently abolished it would be a veritable platform for unscrupulous university staffers to extort money from students, parents and guardians.

Post UME teat will encourage ethnicity, favourism, patronage, red-tape and other factors that will be a cog in the new admission policy.

If we are to scrap JAMB other examination bodies like WAEC and NECO should also be scrapped since exam fraud takes place at all levels of the educational system including tertiary institutions.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by Mfodm(m): 5:50pm On Oct 17, 2005
IT IS EITHER THE GOVERNMENT SCRAP'S JAMB, AND USE THE RESULT OF APTITUDE TEST AS A CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION, OR THEY CONTINUE THE USE OF JAMB, AND FORGET ABOUT THE APTITUDE TEST..
It is totally wrong, and unacceptable for Nigerian Universities to subject intending candidates to another test, screening, exam, interview, or what soever name they choose to call it, after a student must have passed JAMB exam.
By conducting Aptitude test, you are indirectly saying that JAMB is irrelevant, a White Elephant, and cannot be trusted.....This perception, i believe the Nigerian Government does not want... Perharps, this might be the reason why the Government has SUSPENDED the use of the aptitude test result as a criterial for admission NATIONWIDE pending the outcome of the STAKEHOLDERS MEETING on Monday 17th October 2005, after which directives and modalities will be given on the next line of action to undertaken for admission procedue.......................
I am fully in support of the suspension............IT IS EITHER THEY LET JAMB BE.......OR THEY SCRAP IT, AND USE ONLY THE SO-CALLED APTITUDE TEST................................

Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by niceguy(m): 9:40am On Oct 19, 2005
Mfon or any other person in the forum should clearify me about the post-Ume test.
is it true that the FG have cancelled it or still going on?
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by otokx(m): 10:08am On Oct 20, 2005
the FG has not scrapped the UME test, its a rumour being spread by those who have failed woefully. People that score 280 in JAMB cannot score at least 180 in such aptitude test and when u think that the exam was set from past JAMB questions you really wonder. Its no secret anymore, no poor man or his child can attend any university in nigeria. the money for handouts and accomodation, transport and feeding is quite large. The recent statetment from pro chancellors in favour of tuition fee only compounds the problem.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by pharrod(m): 12:44am On Oct 23, 2005
During the test exercise at the Nnamdi Azikiwe,Akwa , a candidate who applied to read LAW was asked the qualities of a lawyer. The candidate went ahead to answer that a good law,not lawyer, should read the Bible,a good law should wear suits,a good law should go to church everyday,a good law should be merriable. Then another who applied to read LAW in another university and she scored 320 points in JAMB,gave the name of the author of things falls apart as GENERAL SANI ABACHA.Yet another candidate who scored 290 points and applied to read medicine in one of the university said the difference between plants and animal was that man gets married and plants do not get married.I'm in total support of the test, most graduates now doesn't know how to speak good English or to defend their CV,nothing will show you that the person went through the four corners of the university.
What they are doing now is very good, let our younger ones read their books .

Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by Greatpeter(m): 9:09am On Oct 23, 2005
They are still selling handouts in our universities.

FG has just stamped the post JAMB test fee at One thousand naira now.
So which way?
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by otokx(m): 8:15am On Oct 24, 2005
the pegging of the exam fee at N1000 by the federal government is commendable.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by xxxnet(m): 12:39am On Nov 14, 2005
I want to confirm the cancellation of the post-JAMB test from my buds on this great knowledgeable site of ours. If this is true then, i pressume some special kind of insanity has desended on the custodians of educational welfare of this country. This I say because, we're were introduced to the new educational system and this other system meant to curb the admission of the money-for-hand-back-for-ground candidates who cant even spell out their names.

I appreciate the move but protest against the way educational mattters are handled in this country. It deserves much respect and attention if it is truly the best LEGACY!
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by Seun(m): 12:56am On Nov 14, 2005
The post-JAMB test has been deemed "unconstitutional" by the House of Representatives, but the Education Minister Mrs. Chinwe Obanji insists that the programme must go on:
"Education Minister, Chinwe Obaji, says there is no going back on the post-University Matriculation Examination (UME) test which universities administer on admission seekers, despite the views of lawmakers and others.

"The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a resolution urging her to withdraw the directive that universities should conduct the test, and advised schools to refund fees collected from candidates for the purpose. Majority of the lawmakers contended that Obaji violated the Constitution by the directive."

The cancellation of the post jamb test by our "reps" has proven once again that our leaders are still on seat to satisfy their interest alone. The post jamb test opened the secret of the high and mighty children who wrote the jamb exam in their own houses. Yes I am very sure that the post JAMB test is a well come development in our educational system and I am 100%in support of it. I read the mail written by niceguy shocked and I want to say that the exam was free and fair, if the time given was cut short how did other student pas the test under such a strict invigilation of which I am a living witness.

Hi my fellow student,my own suggestion is that JAMB should be canceled in nigeria,I am planning on protesting for that soonest,JAMB have really caused me a great havock in life,I sat for the EXAM this year,When the result result came out,i scored 282,my choice was unilag,i went for the screening test, but before then,i require the original JAMB slip for the TESt ,but i went to the JAMB office ,but all to no avial, there is too much people ,and i mark the day as Hell, the woman at the office told us that we can use the internet result to sit for the Exam,so that make me happy a little,so i use the JAMB internet result for the Test on the 7th Oct,On the 10th oct which is monday,I went to JAMB office to obtain my Slip,Because i will still need it for my Registration if my name come out of the Unilag list,On getting there,I was told my result was witheld,After spending much on Admission,This is the Money my parent left for my education before passing on.JAMB Y ME!!!!.Well i dont know where nigeria is heading to ..Thing are getting worst everyday.I am using this opportunity to appeal to my fellow student in they can co-operate not to obtain next year Jamb Examination to see what wil happen or to appeal that Jamb should be canceled,I guess we dont need it any more,Jamb have cause a lot of people like me a great havock...Now my Name is out in Unilag,WHAT WILL I USE TO CLEAR MY ADMISSION OR REGISTRATION?NOTHING,JAMB SHOULD BE CANCELED.....OLALEKAN.....

Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by oghos2k(m): 9:14pm On Nov 19, 2005
I DID THAT OF UNIBEN AND IT WASNT THAT BAD BUT ITS JUST THE TIME THAT WAS SHORT.THE POST UME STUFF IS THE BEST INNOVATION IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IN YEARS. ITS THE BEST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO DOES THAT ALWAYS GO ABOUT SEEKING RUNS OF VARIOUS TYPES TO SCORE HIGH MARKS IN THE UME EXAM. BUT ALL THE SAME, THE STUFF IS COOL.
Re: Post-JAMB Examinations in Nigerian Universities by Nobody: 11:36pm On Nov 20, 2005
reading thru the posts on this topic have been very revealing and downright amusing.
is it possible to score 270 and above in jamb and not be able to construct a simple sentence in English language written or spoken? I'm afraid for the youth of this nation. i wrote the exam about 7 years ago and scored 220, i remember crying my eyes out when i heard the result because i knew what i was capable of scoring. right in my school i knew colleagues who scored more than 50-70 points above my score who i had to coach in maths, physics and chemistry for the SSCE. Absurdities do happen!
Ironic that many youths who kick against the post ume aptitude tests do not batt an eyelid to fork out thousands of naira to write the TOEFL, SAT, and other aptitude tests for american universities.
If any meaningful progress is to be made in the nigerian society, our attitudes towards many issues must change. Some argue that jamb was set up to make university admissions "just and fair" on the basis of catchment area and educationally disadvantaged state status. I wish to submit that nowhere in the world is university admission uniform. Every university even down to individual departments have independent criteria for admitting students. Out of more than 15 differnet postgradaute depts in my school here in the usa, there are just about 80 students per year. With each student being the best in his/her individual areas. this makes for healthy competition among students and schools and is the major factor that drives the scientific dominance of the advanced countries today. it is no longer news that such schools also select the very best from africa, entice them with mouthwatering scholarships and make them work for their own societies. such students having been frustrated by the so called "just and fair" admissions policy of jamb.
It is ironic that many students who fail jamb (or score below 230) end up graduating with top class honors in american and british universities while those who scored 270 and above and made it into nigerian premier institutions cannot even manage beyond the first year.
It is not news that not every american can gain admission into schools such as princeton, yale and harvard universities where even some excellent nigerians have studied. It is such "fair and just" mediocre policies such as jamb that have kept us groping in the dark while countries like Ghana and southafrica without such retrogressive laws are begining to become attractive destinations for frustrated nigerians.
Many of our policy makers are also insincere, they insist on keeping jamb while their own children reap the benefits of liberalised policies in other countries. For where America and Europe to adopt policies like jamb, Nigerians will never have the opportunity to study there on the "just and fair" basis of catchment area!
