would the world be a better place? if everyone genuinely thought that there was only one 'god' (or 'allah') and everyone worshipped that said deity in the exactly same way would mankind suffer an easier existence?

I think so, but is it possible to have just one religion, some people will want to prove and even try to create theirs.

No, people would still find ways to form sects and fight about whose sect is the most erudite or something.
