Job Title: Rural Volunteering Development Coordinator
Country: Nigeria
Term: 6 months
Start date: September 2006
Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Canada is seeking a Rural Volunteering Development Coordinator for a volunteer opportunity with the Nigerian partner organization Fantsuam Foundation.

This placement is in support of VSO Nigeria's National Volunteering Program, with the aim of promoting and strengthening local and national volunteering within government, civil society and corporate sectors throughout Nigeria.

This is an exciting position and will require the volunteer to work with Fantsuam Foundation to: 1) raise the profile and standards of (local) volunteering as a means of promoting development in rural and underserved Nigerian communities; and 2) promote volunteering for community integration and civic harmony.

Specifically, the volunteer will be required to:
Identify and assess how volunteers can most effectively contribute to rural development initiatives
Design a program to recruit, select, train and support volunteers
Produce a volunteer policies and procedures manual and training guide
Facilitate volunteer management training
At the end of the placement, the volunteer will be expected to have:
Designed a database for managing volunteer information
Developed and organized training sessions for volunteer trainers
Piloted the volunteer program with Fantsuam's partner organizations
Trained Fantsuam staff in program implementation and management
Qualifications: A demanding placement, the volunteer will ideally have:
Experience in volunteer program design and implementation
Experience in managing volunteers
An in-depth understanding of the potential of volunteers in community development
Experience with software development and database management
Experience in working in a cross-cultural setting
An inclusive and gendered approach to community development

About the project partner:
Fantsuam Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 with the aim of pioneering micro finance and ICT services to enhance rural development. The objectives of the Foundation are to: 1) strengthen the local economy by providing financial support and ICT training to small and micro enterprises; and 2) promote self-employment and self-reliance among women and youth through economic empowerment.

Fantsuam is overseen by a board of trustees made up of Nigerian professionals and has a membership of 3,500 who come from women's groups from the rural areas of Atyap, Bajju, Godogodo, Gwong, Gworok, Ham, Fantsuam, Moro'a and Numana.
