Hausa Language To Be An Official Language In Nigeria
« on: January 08, 2009, 05:20 PM »

Language is among the factors that are hindering the development of Education in Africa, and Nigeria in particular.  If we can compare some countries that are incalcating knowledge with their local language you will find out they'r developed compared to their counterparts. E.g it took china a centuary without  using foreign instructional materials in teaching and learning process. Majority of books going to china has to be translated into chinese language. This is a country where they speak one language.
In Nigeria, we have not less than 250 languages, with three Major languages. Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Lol!
In my opinion if Nigeria is to centralise oNe local language, and as an official language HAUSA will be suitable,
             Reasons
the number of people speaking  hausa in the country is highly  proportional compare to other languages.
International recognition. Hausa is highly recognise and speak in the world than any other language from Nigeria.
Your critic and opinions are  welcome . But no abuse.

This is an unsurprising suggestion on your part considering
how inept you seem at English.

Since the Hausas are the most uneducated, most backward , most underdeveloped, most militant, most violent, most fanatical and most disease ridden of the 3 major tribes why don't we have Yoruigbo as the official language?
We are talking of moving forward aren't we?

na fighting?? What we want is your opinion. Ok, You said Yoruigbo. Thats right. If yoruigbo has ever exist in Nigeria, what are the factors to be put into consideration in centralising it as an official language??

the only reason anyone remembers Hausas is because those in Nigeria had the good fortune to find themselves in the same union with southern nigeria. Anyone bothering about hausas in Niger or Chad?

Such an idea would only be used as a tool to suppress/oppress other ethnic groups. Is it not Nigeria?

Oga poster

You're going to start a fight withthis kind of post.

anyway, Hausa is a bad decision.  There are other tribes in Nigeria, that would love to have their language as the main language in Nigeria. Hell i'm Igbo, i'll love Igbo to be the main language.  Anyway, to involve everytribe in Nigeria, Pidgin English will be a perfect main language in Nigeria.  Every tribe in Nigeria speaks it. Everyone in Nigeria know what pidgin English is. We should promote Broken English as the main language in Nigeria. Don't you think?

@Post,

I believe you are looking at one side of the coin with your proposal.  Let's look at the other side, follow me. . .

Hausa is adopted as the official language in Nigeria.

Next. . . adopt Islam as the national religion of Nigeria so we all can practice one religion. Afterall we all speak one language.

Next. . .adopt sharia as the law of the land, afterall we all speak one language and have one religion.

Next. . .it is unlawful for women to appear in public unless it is with a husband or a male blood relative, . . . it is unlawful for women to appear in public in any dress outfit that does not conform with the guidelines of sharia, . . . it is unlawful to listen to certain types of music, . . .it is unlawful to party, . . . . afterall we all speak one language, have one religion and exist under one law.

Next. . . it is lawful for men to marry more than one wife but no more than four at any one time, afterall. . .

wait a minute, I think I like the last proposal. . . Grin

Poster, I guess you get my point.  In case you are wondering, I speak, write and read Hausa fluently and I am muslim but in an environment that proposes live and let die, youwill not get my vote.  I advocate live and let live views.

If we must adopt a new language more befitting, then I think as Ify suggested, it should be pidgin.  There is life in pidgin, english grammar is stern and dry. . .too formal.

well, am not a professor in history, i will keep on researchn. But i will give u a challenge ask your comparetive education lecturer you will get what i said. With caution. There are minority tribes but chinese language is the most influential, and almost is been spoken by everybody.
@ negro
Dont felt despondent. We need to reach the verge of travesties involved in our educational system. One of our educational objectives is toward vocational and technical training, this is to enhance self reliance. Unfurtunately is not valid in the sense that the purpose is nt fullfill. The tranees are nt meetn the capabilities required for self reliance. And dont bet wit me, language is the most influential factor that is hindering our development. Let me side an example to u. Assuming there's prevalence of rindapest. If a fulani herdsman, or Igbo herdsman will be given chance to speak in their natives  about rindapest they will sort out the solutn to tackle it. But that oppourtunity will nt be given to them, Hence, the development has been mitigate. I stand to be corrected.

@poster
while i agree of all the major nigerian languages,hausa is the easiest to learn and frankly sounds best,i dont think it should be made the official language considering the ethnic mistrust that exists in nigeria as a result of the watersheds in our country,
as for education,the south east,south west and even south south are relatively better off educationally leaving the hausas to catch up,so if the language was the problem then surely they should have been educated in large numbers by now going by your assertions, the problem has nothing to do with languages as the problems are much more fundamental than merely languages,and i bet you even if the official language is changed to hausa,the more educated and enlightened parts of nigeria will end up knowing more about the hausa language reading and writing e.t.c than the indigenous hausas

Chinese does not formally exist as a language. The official language of China is Mandarin.

Hausa should not be the official language of Nigeria. Do you want to start another war? Like some other poster said, the issue goes deeper than just language.

@poster, you contradict yourself with your China example. China does not speak one language. There are so many other languages and dialects in that nation. Some of them are undocumented or unrecognized, some don't even have an official alphabet or writing system. And yet, China managed to rise.

In a sense, Chinese can be considered a language, but there are so many different variations and dialects that one dialect may seem unintelligible to the other.

Just like Jamaican English, Caribbean English, [some forms of] Australian and British English are totally unintelligible to me.

@ zinachi.
Yep! Chinese doesnt exist as a language, accepted. Mandarin is the official language of China. Right? The question is, is mandarin a foreign language or a local language?? If Mandarin is the later then definately there's a lesson to be learn. Let local language be an official language. I opine Hausa, which one is yours and why?

Swahili is the most popular and widely spoken language in Africa.

Hausa is the 2nd most popular and widely spoken language in Africa.

Yoruba is the  3rd most popular and widely spoken language in Africa.

I never knew there was anything called "educated language".

So much for blasphemy

@Abu-Maryam:

It would be nice to have a local language as the national language of Nigeria, but Nigeria has too many butting personalities.

In America, although English is the national language, all official documents and most educational documents are written in English and Spanish. Sometimes including French, Mandarin, Portuguese, and other languages depending on the state. Maybe Nigeria can keep English as the national language and then have secondary, tertiary, and so on languages depending on the state?

Personally, I would say that Mandarin is a dialect of Chinese. However, because of the broad differences of many of hundreds of dialects, some people may argue that some Chinese dialects are not dialects at all, but totally different languages. However, I think Mandarin is widely recognized as a sub-language or dialect of Chinese.

Pidgin is the best alternative because almost everybody in Nigeria understands it, at least you don't need to go to school to understand it.

English should be the main language.

In a country where picking sides based on tribal affiliation can get one killed, can't we all just settle for English, considering its the 21st century lingua franca.

It makes sense economically.

@ Topic,

That would NEVER happen. After the Sharia debacle we have in the north, do you think any right thinking southerner would endorse Hausa? in your dreams. Rather than that, you will find the Yorubas cast their lot with the Igbos and vice versa. Adopting Hausa will be one step to Shariadom. Thanks but no thanks. As far as I am concerned, English is perfect as the official language (No favouritism, No bias and most citizens are at least bi-lingual. We have the added advantage of being able to communicate on the world stage).
