real was ready to pay 10m pounds, chelsea was ready to pay 20m pounds, thats enough to replace all the guys easily, afterall how much did zokora cost spurs? 5million. if both mascherano and tevez cost 15million we cdve gotten them as well if we wanted to. anyways, at least reyes is on loan now with baptista coming in.

team commitment is the first thing - if cole doesnt want to stay why beg him? sell him off, afterall someone else was sold for him to get a chance.

Fellow Gunners,

I rarely talk here but do enjoy the posts. However, for those who's clamouring for us to sell Cole, what happens when u sell him and can't get your "target" replacement, or worse still sell him and Reyes, have 30mill in bank but still can't get your "target"?

We need to analyse things in two respects,

1 - What is the target of Arsenal FC with respect to this season? Is it to win trophies?

2 - Do u win trophies with cash in bank or players on the field?

Check out Chelsea for instance, there is the cash in bank AND players on the field. Selling Cole for £25m aint the issue, getting a ready replacement is more important.

The latest is a swap of Reyes with Baptista, and I see Cole and Gallas swap (with some cash of course) also coming by 12am

Lets get behind the club. No player is bigger than a club!

just for the sake of it, £30million for Reyes and Cole to REAL MADRID N CHELSEA is day light robbery!!! real willing to pay 17million for reyes wasnt really a problem as we have many midfield players but we need replacement

Cygan is gone !   Undecided

cole for 20m pounds is daylight robbery?? in what world? how much did barca pay for zambrotta - the best left or right back in the world?

arsenal didnt really have targets, thats my grouse with wenger, he kept saying the team is fine the team is fine.

if liverpool can get kuyt, newcastle get martins, chelsea get ballack and sheva, why the heck can't we get our targets if we make them?

we do not need cole- he only played 3 games last season - get rid of him and use the money to build - do it early like rosicky

goodbye to below average cygan, if he wasnt french and getting paid so little he wdnt have lasted this long

cole to chelsea for 20m is daylight robbery!!  Grin

Going to press to anounce players you are interested in is not a good move, arsenal shouldnt be accused of making empty promises which in other word make players lose focus and become disruptive in their clubs

with Gallas and the return of Lauren,Diaby,Clichy we can have a steady ride  Wink

If you are determined and not changing your mind like senna today hargreaves tomorrow, mascherano the next, u can get your man. chelsea wanted ballack for over a year and they got him. liverpool wanted that chilean guy for over 2 years now and they got him. c'mon!! if westham can get tevez and mascherano why wont we get someone we seriously want?

we've become very insignificant in the transfer market (except for selling our best talents to other clubs)- apart from trying to get baptista last season (which we failed because the player didnt want to come), who else have we chased intently over the last 3 seasons?

I hope with clich y and lauren our back line improves, as for diaby, he wont be back till november and december, his best years are stil 2-3 years away. are we going to wait till then?

How I wish Tevez came to Arsenal. whats the latest on Julio Baptista?
Hopefully Arsenal won’t embarrass us more against some low class outfit plus success starved teams as was with Aston Villa and Manchester city.
Let me tell you and I know you expect me to say, Arsenal will win two trophies. Guess what I won’t give you the satisfaction. We are achieving more that 4th in league, making to UEFA cup finals and FA cup.

Anyway, without much signings we are likely to be position 3 and this is worse.

I hope we will actually stand up to Chelsea & Manchester United still and not take the field as a formality to make our donation of 3 points. Never again! History or no history.
Last season we never took the fight to the two teams and we just rolled over for slaughter. We are big dogs men not likes of Sunderland.

need to always quote Deb, it's looking strange and worrisome (in my part of the world that could be misconstrued as stalking!!).

@ Akola and Debosky,
I believe neither of you are in the coaching team of Arsenal FC and from the little I know, AW has been after Baptista for as long as you both are citing regarding the Livepool move for the Chilean.

Whats the use chasing a lost cause? I bet sooner or later someone will say AFC should bring back Vieira. When a player deems its time for him to move on, there isnt much need to hold on to him against his wishes. Its just like every one of us pursuing our daily breads, when you feel the time is right to change employer, you do what "you believe is best for yourself".

There are three reasons why i quote people, one of which is Intelligence and objectivity.

Debosky and Lordi has disply that and last year Twinstaiye,SirK  and NightRider does similar things.

2) Where were you when i was the only Non-Gunner on this thread that support Arsenal against Barca?

3) Where were you when i launched a tribute  on Dennis Beckgham.

Ok let me see here, if you call a dog BINGO today and then go ahead and call it TIGER tomorrow, does that mean anything, NO ABSOLUTLY SWEET f@#k ALL!!

Like i said somewhere else, try not to bust a vien, i did say if you had anything to say, positive or otherwise, just post it!! picking words from others (selectively i might add) only helps reinforce what is already there, no matter how you try to sugar coat it.

And please no one is saying i know everything about ARSENAL, i am learning every day, even from NAIRALAND sport contributors (Even you kola Cool), but i do feel the constant need to brand anyone that doesn't fit into your idea of objectivity as biased, is a bit Elitist, its like saying because you are not British, you really have no worthwhile view on the EPL and so should shut up and listen to old Blighty speak. What that is mate is just rude and insulting!!

as much as we have particular friends on the forum who we seem to always agree with, it still gives you no right to brand every one else as a stupid fanatic of their club, as far as i am concerned you have every God given right to run out naked in the street and shout "ARSENALLLLLL ARE THE F@#KING BEST FOOTBALL TEAM IN THE WORLD!!" as a fan that is your right, deciding to be  (so called!?) objective and unbiased as your friends seem to be, is solely a perogative of the person expressing their view points, despite what you might feel about it.

So don't worry about the rest of us Biased and silly GONNERS, we can't help the way we are Cool, sure your Unbiased and intelligent friends will spare you the truama of reading our views, which frankly must be so horrible for you Undecided

Like my people say "Leave Story for Tortoise" - lets get back to the topic that is can arsenal compete?

in my opinion, with the addition of gallas, we are stronger defensively than we were last year, barring injuries and the quick recovery of senderos, clichy and lauren, we will have more than enough cover at the back, maybe even give Kolo a game off or two! as long as Lehmann stays fit our back line is fully solid, but till clichy gets fir abeg let flamini play LB, leave hoyte to the reserves and carling cup please!

midfield- it remains to be seen where baptista will play, but he no doubt brings needed direction, physical power and aerial ability to our squad, if rosicky didnt leave his shooting boots in germany we should have at least 2 midfieldders who will give us some goals this season. diaby will play largely in the reserves this season i think, unless we have some major injuries

as for attack - henry, adebayor, van persie and aliadiere will get better and score goals

walcott will continue his cameo appearances for a while to come.

i think this is the best tramsfer season we have had at arsenal since the season where van persie and fabregas came in

we actually got 2 quality replacements for players we sold out.

Yup thats right

I think Baptista can also play upfront or move infront of the midfielders as TH14 is deep down by the corner now he has more options on who to pass to for a shot at goal,

forget Kola and his word. we are here to have fun and debo, Kola & everyone is aware of all those only that we can't wash our dirty linen in public. A true gunner should take a bullet on behalf and not curtail. the thing is nerve recking men! Stamp your foot.

Gunners!
Gallas is not a bad aquisition either and Baptista will team up well in midfield.

Wenger was not a bloke to make that smart move of catching Rosiscky at only 6M and releasing Pires. we now have a player who can shoot from a distance just like Manchester United have with rooney, scholes & Ronaldo,Liverpools Gerrard & Alonso,Chelsea with Lampard and now ballack.
what we lack is enough back up bench power plus we desperately need a central midfielder like makelele.
Give us a break all you half gunners plus all anti-gunners. we are down but not out

@ Everyone,
Can Arsenal compete with the other teams this season? The answer is NO.
Arsenal cannot compete with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd and Tottenham because Arsene Wenger got it all wrong with the players he has got in his kitty.
Wenger needs to sign 2 good midfielders and a very intelligent striker.
Adebayor is a global deception and Wenger should loan him out for good strikers in other clubs in the Premiership.
The responsibility on Fabregas is just too burdensome for his age and experience. He is fast wearing out.
Arsenal needs a gritty player in the middle of the pack and Tomas Gravesen or Robbie Savage would have done it for Arsene.
I cannot wait for United Vs Arsenal match in a couple of weeks because i am sure Man Utd will make the gooners on NL see Arsene's weakness.
TH should be given a month's leave as he is now a shadow of himself.
Wenger complained about the world cup as being the reason why Henry burnt out but Henry wasn't the only player that featured in the world cup final.
Cristiano Ronaldo played 6 matches in the world cup like Henry and he is playing remarkably well.
Carvalho, Deco and many other players had a hectic summer but are playing well.
Gooners should stop making excuses for Henry and face facts.
Arsenal will struggle this season unless they introduce grit and the desire to win into their gameplay.

Anytime i see Jackal's name near an Arsenal thread i get Worried, Grin

I know i have already said this so many times, but let me repeat myself just for emphasis sake.  BLOODY NORA!! THE LEAGUE IS JUST 3 WEEKS OLD, AND EVERYONE IS ALREADY GETTING AN ORGASM OVER WHO IS GOING TO WIN AND WHO IS GOING TO STRUGGLE!!

Pompey are second on the table!? really shows how the league will finish hey!  Jackal when was the last time that Manchester United never won their first three games, or the question should be, does winning your first three games now determine who wins the league.

Besides, cross the spurs bridge first before talking about playing Arsenal.

The league is a maraton, and as you know running a maraton like a 100 metres dash is only recipe for failure Wink

Anyway every one should just calm down oh!! the league starts properly Dec/Jan and i predict this years will be the closes we have ever seen, as every team now has the potential to beat anyone else, (which has not been seen for a very long time).

So come back with this thread in dec, then i can tell you whether Arsenal can compete or not, deciding that now, is just premature as we have only played two games FFS.

AND LET ME SAY THIS OFFICIALLY: WHETHER WE LOSE AT OLD TRAFFORD OR NOT, STILL DOESN'T DETERMINE WHERE THE EPL CROWN WILL END UP, ( maybe the return leg at the grove will!) all it does is give Manchester United supporters bragging rights.

But you need to remember, that in every war you might lose some battles. and thats what the league is A WAR!!

@loyika,
I cannot believe u still think the EPL is a marathon.
It seems you're still living in fool's paradise because we all know Chelsea has raised the standard in the Premiership.
Doom looms for any team that loses more than 4-5 matches in a season these days, no thanx to Chelski for raising the standards to that level.
How many points can a team lose at the beginning of the season and still compete?
Man Utd had a bad start last season but they put up the most sensational come back between December and April and they were still 8 points behind Chelsea.
Chelsea won last season because they were able to win the 1st 8-9 matches of the season and they took that advantage to the very end.
A stitch in time saves nine and that applies to any team that wants to achieve in the EPL.
I have not said Man Utd will win the league but starting very well is now a priority for any team to win the premiership.
Arsenal has failed yet again to achieve a good start and it will need a biblical miracle for Arsene to get back on track.
Talking about Tottenham,
The last time Spurs won at Old Trafford was 1989. Thats fcuking 17 years ago. Shocked
Its a far cry for Martin Jol and his goons to surprise the new-improved United team.
Ronaldo and Saha will make a mince meat out of Spurs the way they have been able to humiliate London clubs this season
Fulham and Charlton have seen HELL already. Spurs and Arsenal won't be different this month. Grin

Jackal!
I must agree with you about our less signings plus lack of enough bench power rather good back-up. But still I can't wait to play Manchester United. don't even start poodling with history even Spain won a basketball gold they have never won ever since.
Meaning Arsenal will not take the pitch as a formalty to donate 3 points to you again as it has been the case in the past. this season with our bad start ,Gunners will take all the big dogs to hell and leave them their in heads.
I don't have to justify their winning but believe this. History or no history!

when was the last time arsenal lost at man city? donkey years ago - didnt it happen now?

when was the last time chelsea lost one of their first five games? at least 2 seasons ago - does that mean they automatically won't win the prem?

when last was portsmouth second on the league table?

leave story for tortise - on the field of play all these your stories don't really matter - its current form that will tell, lets wait and see

arsenal may not have spent as much as the rest, but don't doubt the resolve of the current crop, just because henry hasnt scored yet he should be written off?
that shows how shallow your footie knowledge is, lets see who can beat him to highest goalscorer this season, the only credible challenger (ruud) is gone, maybe sheva or tevez may do something.

we all know the bar has been raised- all across the league, thats why even chelsea will not be able to dominate the way they did before, its all going to be much much closer this season.

History does matter especially with a team on fire.
Arsenal lost at Man City because of Wenger's shallow judgement of selection and i am sure he will look back and kick himself.
Only die-hard fans like Nairaland goners will think Arsenal can compete with the present crop of players they have got.
Can Arsenal ever beat Mourinho's team? The answer is a big NO.
It will take Wenger's newbreed a couple of seasons to reproduce the 03/04 season because Arsenal lacks firepower in front of goal.
Overdependent on Henry is beginning to make the team so predictable that teams like Newcastle, Man City and Portsmouth now gets confident when playing the guinners.
Time will tell and i will remind all y'all by December 31st when the league will take shape.
