Well everything contributes. Watch the kind of food u eat. Don't eat food with high level of cholesterol ie. greasy foods, food with high fatty contents etc. Don't stuff your face with fast food. Eat healthy (try more vegetables than meat). I know people who'll put small rice in their plate and a pot of meat to go with it. NOT GOOD! Try eat everything on a balanced level and remember A FAIR AMOUNT OF VEGETABLES!  For some people stress might be a problem. Some people under stress add serious weight. So if u kno this is the case for u, then avoid stress like a plague. Try excercising a little' too. Say, twice a week go to a gym or try running a mile or two. I know it ain't easy but it pays off at the end. You've prolly heard all these before but I'm jus trying to help (and I hope I did  )

All Nigerian food is healthy to eat as long as u don't OVERLOAD!  Remember, TOO MUCH MEAT IS A HUGE PROBLEM! Cos' I kno 9jas we like meat.  Also avoid too much rice, because believe it or nat too much rice (or any other food with alot of carbs) makes u add weight. Like I said before, eat everything on a leveled scale. Let one not be too much more (ok maybe a little' more; but not a significant amount) than the other.

well, I think that the safest way to lose weight is going to a dietitian ad starting a cardio routine. You also need to know why you are gaining weight, it could be an emotional issues which my not be treated just with a diet.

Depends on the person. Ma mom gains weight under stress but I lose serious weight. Sometimes people under stress begin to binge-eat and so they add weight. Others like me, starve themselves or rather lose their appetite. Hence, they lose weight.

enough excuses we as black people eat to much s h i t palm oil-lard-pork fat-to much rice-sugar-to much starch, our food is to oily and not enough veg or fruits, to stay slim i went to super healthy way, i use honey or fruit sugar no cane sugar it has empty calories(no nutritional value what so ever apart from sweetness) use olive or sunflower oil only and just a little when cooking low salt or non at all loads of veg with every meal plenty fruit with every meal eat seeded or whole wheat bread never white bread it will just make u fat lots of water i do not eat chocolate or sugary drinks unless it is that time of the month  take the fat of every meat you cook especially chicken stock cubes STAY AWAY FROM THEM THEY OR ONLY CHEMICALS AND FAT) exercise, walk or f u c k more eat three meal a day that is how i keep slim

the number one thing for anyone living in the states or any so called "first" world country can do to get a healthier diet is to eliminate anything with the following additives
MSG Corn Syrup Hydrogenated Oils of all kinds.
They are all manufactured additives made from corn through various enzymatic processes that are not meant to be consumed. Especially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HOV). Unbleached HOV looks almost like candle wax and is added to baked goods to increase their shelf life. Corn Syrup is the reason diabetes is a so called "epidemic" in this country. Prevention is ALWAYS, ALWAYS better than treatement. Eliminate those 3 things and excercise and eat your local food. Fast foods are not only bad diets, they are KILLERS. (most fast foods are baked with HOV because it makes foods taste better, they also add corn syrup and msg to make them taste sweeter).
Infact refined sugars like Sugar cane are bad as well but not as horrible as corn syrup which really isnt corn syrup at all just like Hydrogenated oils aren't oils at all but fats that have a trans conformation (as opposed to cis fats that occur naturally in higher concentrations). Not only did the sugar cane kill millions of slaves who harvested it it is killing people now that consume the bleached, refined product.
The guy who said stay away from stock cubes, wow, thank you for that. Those things are POISON. MSG and TRANSFATS all concentrated into one delicious cube. Use salt in moderation. Cook with palm or coconut or olive oil, refined vegetable oils like corn or canola are bad.
Meat is good and good fat and good cholesterol is essential to your food no matter what is fed to us by companies pushing grain products like corn and its derivatives. We humans have grown and lived on meat for thousands of years, our bodies are meant to consume meats and the fats that are present in them. The problem comes when the meats we consumed are from animals fed grains instead of their natural food, injected with hormones and bred in factories unlike the animals that occur in nature so that they have even larger fat content and develop toxic chemicals from the hormones and pesticide from the grains they consume. Most cows in the US are fed corn, not grass, because it is cheaper. When you feed an animal food it is not supposed to it it becomes sick, so they inject it with hormones to combat the conditions it develops, they kill the cow, package it, place preservatives so it stays "fresh", package it with CO2 so it doesnt oxidize and voilla, preprocessed meat that is bad for you in more ways than one.
The moral of the story is simple. Stay away from PROCESSED FOOD. Processed food is the reason cancer and diabetes are the top health related killers in this country. Sweden took the initiative and banned transfat. The US will never do the same as long as pro Corn Agribiz like ConAgra continue to exist in the form that they do.
Eat Organic vegetables, farm raised meat, consume as little sugar as you can, stay away from substitute sugars like Nutrasweet (they are 1000X worse than Cane Sugar, they claim the calories are not empty, sure, they are non caloric much like DDT is non caloric, both are not meant to be ingested), eat ogranic eggs from farm raised chickens, coconut is excellent especially the oil, cook with olive and palm oil as opposed to corn and canola oil, we have lived on foods like yam and palm oil and ground cooked peppers and beans for years, they are good for us as long as they are not genetically modified or preprocessed.
PS I am not a lady, I just realized this thread was for ladies to stay slim. However my facts still stand for both sexes.

the most healthy place according to CNN documentary is an island in Japan average age of people there is 95 to 100 years. They don't eat meat there at all. 80-90 percent of their foods are fresh/raw fruits and vegetables.

omoge, you partly right, but in biology apart from nurture there is nature, both are intertwined.
Southern Nigerians, for thousands of years, have eaten stuff like Yam, Alot of Vegetable stews, and our bodies have evolved to metabolise that type of food. When we where colonized alot of processed food from Industrialized countries made our way into our diets. They are the LAST THING we should be eating as these foods have not even existed for more than 200 years. And people wonder why they cause so much sickness. The Chinese have used MSG for the longest time in THEIR DIETS. Their body has evolved to eat that stuff. We have not. Africans are more prone to high blood pressure. Why? Because for years we ate very low Sodium diets. When you introduce such diets in such a short time span you get the problems and sickness.
The further away from processed food you are the better you will be. It is that simple. The more processed food is the less nutritional value it has. Ultra Pasteurized milk for instance has such low nutritional value that synthezied calcium and Vitamin D has to be put back into it (and the synthezied forms do not digest and metabolize like the Organic forms)! Imagine, this is milk, one of the most nutritional food on the planet, the process of Pasteurization destroys nutrients that it originally had!
Alot of ORIGINAl Nigerian food is just like the original food of other cultures like Rural Japan and China. it is high in Vegetable, some Meat with little starch. Meat is good for you (wild meat, not the animals they cage and pump with antibiotics and hormones in the West) and has certain fatty acids and nutrients you will not find in Vegetables. When it comes to food the Western Diet save for Italian and Greek (Mediterranean) has nothing to offer but poison.

People should also take into account that when we heat those fruits and vegetables at temperature over 107 degrees we destroy the natural enzymes, nutrients, and vitamins that are really good for the body, Not only that we destroyed them, we denature them which also is not good for the body. From personal experience, I would tell you that it is a long process. You will not see results in one week but will find it overtime. I had a lifestyle change because I developed high blood pressure in my very early 20's while weighing about 120 lb.
