Christians: Do Not Resist An Evil Person?
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:39 AM »

"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'

But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.

If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles."

From: Matthew 5:38-41

If someone wants to cheat you, steal from you, or harm you, do not resist!  Is this '[b]mumuism[/i]', or is it the word of God?  Do you live by this principle, or do you have a good excuse for ignoring it?

I believe in the existence of a supreme creator.I'm a theist, but i'll be damned if i let anyone stick his or her own version of what God is,wants,or said down my throat.

You are so funny.

So smart and very intelligent and yet you seem so innocent and naive. I mean that in a good way so please don't banned me ;D

You don't have to be an atheist because you don't believe the bible is correct.

I don't believe the entirety of the bible but what I do believe is, that we have to abide by certain basic principles and that has nothing to do with the bible or turning the left cheek.

Turning the left cheek from what I was tought really meant,

"If someone is telling you something and you disagree, instead of getting mad, turn the right cheek and listen with your other ear"

It is simply a parable, not the word of God. The parable simply means, listen with and open mind and a closed mouth. The basic principle of this is to allow for fair and positive communication.

The meaning got pushed out of it's true meaning because of religious warfare reasons. If the enemy is forced to believe that one should take a beaten instead of fighting back because it is Gods way, one will loose all that one has, including his mind. This method makes it easy for the one who's mission is to win against his supposed enemy.

The power of arbitrary reinterpretation!

"Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also" becomes:

"If someone is telling you something and you disagree, instead of getting mad, turn the right cheek and listen with your other ear"

This is dishonest.  You're just making the bible say what you want it to say.  Why bother?  Why not just do your own thing?  I don't feel compelled to twist the bible to make it support my lifestyle.  I just disregard it.

seun, why are u trying to mislead young christians?

When Jesus was trying to say in that parable, is that as christians we should avoid revenge. In the days of the law ( MOSIAC LAW) it was said an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But CHRIST was trying to preach PEACE and nothing more.

My Uncle is fond of saying this" IF U SEE TWO PEOPLE LIVING TOGETHER PEACEFULLY, THEN ONE PERSON NORMALLY ACTS AS THE FOOL'.

if someone slaps u, and u revenge, the outcome will definetly be bloody and thus lead to truoble and more trouble.

Remember when JESUS was about to be crucified, he was slapped by the high priest, Christ did not retailate neither did he turn the right cheek, instead he asked 'WHAT HAVE I DONE THAT U SMITE ME"

In essense, what I'm know Christ was saying is that we should avoid anything that will bring dispute amongst we chrsitians even if we have to PLAY THE FOOL SOMETIMES!!!!!

Hypocritical Christians like to twist the bible to say anything they want it to say.  Shame on such people!

From my little understanding of the yoruba language OLUWASEUN means THANK U GOD, Now as an ATHEIST, which GOD are u thanking?

To become a full time ATHEIST, please start by changing ur name, so that we will know that u are for real.

DO NOT RESIST AN EVIL PERSON, TURN THE RIGHT CHEEK IF HE SLAPS U ON THE LEFT.

Why would u take thing in its literal meaning like that. Christ was just saying we should be very tolerant and be ready to take shit to avoid trouble.  So am i twisting the scriptures?

Our elders are known to talk in proverbs, and so was Christ. For instance they say, "when u eat toad, make sure u eat the big one" Does it in anyway imply that we all should go toad hunting?

When Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes o the Father but by me" you took it literally.  You took, "except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" literally.  Why not this one?

talking about being born again, the literal meaning is going back to ur mothers womb to be born again. Abi?

But being born again in its real sense does not mean going back to ur mothers womb, it simply means accepting Christ as ur Lord and Savoiur and turning to a new leaf.

By saying that, you've won the argument.  That's what I get for arguing with Christians about the bible.

I said that is what was told to me. African Griots have told me that, that was the true meaning before the revision of the bible was translated from its original text.

I am not a Christian, nor  Muslim.

I am not anything I am just me doing my own thing.

I believe in God and the Goddess the leaders to the laws of the opposites who rule this planet.

Honestly, I really don't care about what Christians believe or what the bible Say's, I was just contributing to this discussion.

IMO because you are an Atheist, you are looking for other Black Atheist because you don't want to be alone.

You are not alone, there are many black Atheist. You just probably won't find them here in Nairaland because most of these black folks in here have been watered down by the Christian and Muslim religion, they can't think for their self.

I just saw this show on television the other day where this black atheist couple felt that they were not being accepted by people because they don't believe in God. They were the most beautiful and loveliest couple I have ever seen. They both had very good jobs, they live on a farm and they took very good care of their children they also appeared to have a sincere love for each other.

There are a lot of black Atheist out there but you won't find them in here. The closest you are going to get to an Atheist or to someone who understands and Atheist in nairaland is someone like me who does not claim a religion and accepts people as they come. You won't see me trying to convert you and so called 'help you save your sole" before the day you die.
