Hey guys I have a problem. Please post IF and ONLY IF you have a solution.
For security reasons, I hid some files on my computer. As in
Open the folder -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View
And I hid the files from there.
But now, if you go through Tools, the Folder Options menu isn't there.
It isn't accessible through the Control Panel either
Each time I load DOS (I want to try to un-hide it with DOS), the computer just begins restarting.
HELP. THIS IS URGENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Information given is insufficient.
What Operating system are you using?
However, assuming it is Win98, you can try this. If you have another PC or you have a friend that has one. Simply remove the hard disk of your computer, add it as a SLAVE to the other computer, then you can search for your hidden files.

I use Win XP I don't have any friend to do such with. The thing I want to do is DISPLAY those files. There are some files I named randomly, to increase security. I just put my hand above the keyboard and let it fall, whatever keys that get pressed are the filenames. There are some files I've forgotten about, but I know the exist, do you get? ?? You can't quote all the files existing in 'My Documents' can you? I need to see those files!!! Tayo

Make use of Nero Burning ROM to read the files or just read them in good old DOS

ajiboyet, this is what you should do without people thinking that I am pulling another effects! as they called it here
I am sure you are using windows DOS version 6.1 and above? If you are, go to your command line by going through start - Program Files - Accessories - Command Prompt.
But if this is disabled by the administrator with a policy script, then go to start - run and type cmd/command line, this will open up the command line interface. Do the following
C:\> cd directory //Change to the directory you want to unhide your file(s)
C:\directory>attrib /S /D |more to show you all the attributes associated with a particular file(s)
Attributes are
1. + Sets an attribute. 2. - Clears an attribute. 3. R Read-only file attribute. 4. A Archive file attribute. 5. S System file attribute. 6. H Hidden file attribute.
To unhide a particular file do this
C:\directory>attrib -H filename
or
To unhide the whole directory, do this
C:\directory>attrib -H
Remember you can use UNC (Universal Naming Convention) to reference the directories and files i.e
C:\>attrib -H C:\nairaland\software\pictures
or for a particular file
C:\>attrib -H C:\nairaland\software\pictures\filename
You can get more help with attrib by typing
C:\>help attrib

@sbucareer As much as I don't like you it seems its only us that are flowing. If you read my initial post (the first post) you'll see that I wrote that every time I load DOS (I use DOS very very very well and I know many many many of the commands), my computer begins to restart. It happens on some computers in school, and I used to pray that it doesn't happen to mine. Now it's happening. I miss DOS very much, but this isn't about missing DOS.
Do you have a solution to my DOS problem?

@sbucareer When I say I don't like you, it means from previous posts. Like I said, you and I are flowing. It seems it's only you that understands my problem. There's nothing you've written there that I don't know. So the "unfathomable chasm of knowledge" is unapplicable to me.
Please, I need a solution to my DOS problem

I seem to be making more foe everyday, well - I wish I knew what It is I have done? Be it vivid or off beam to those my words or gen has offended profoundly, I only wish you can see pass the beleaguered nature of the forum.
Nevertheless, coming from a city that forbearance is everything in life, I am left with absolute acquaintance to my folks.
Back to the question ajiboyet, I understand your question but I would need more clarity on what you meant by "Each time I load DOS (I want to try to un-hide it with DOS), the computer just begins restarting."?
Are you trying to unhide it through Windows i.e GUI or through command line i.e DOS before the computer begins to shutdown? In either case, I should think that there is a virus on your computer.
Windows has got no security measures that will start to shutdown without warning unless it has caught a virus.
Solution
Well, my recommendation is to log into window and do nothing for like five minutes or more to see if the computer tries to shutdown. After that try to navigate to any directory other than the one you want to unhide your files to see if the window begins to shutdown.
Furthermore, if it doesn't then try to navigate to the directory where your files are, hence hidden and see if it start to shutdown.
If it does, sorry man you have caught some sort of virus and would need an antivirus software
But if windows do not shutdown when you access other directory other to the ones your hidden files are then I would suggest you copy them to a USB drive. Here is my command that I would use:
C:\>attrib -A -R -H c:\directory\*.* | xcopy c:\directory\*.* D:\USBDRIVE
This will copy all your hidden files without disturbing the virus to issue command for window shutdown. If the Virus intercept you command and know what you are trying to do and issue shutdown command, sorry man you are out of luck.
Finally, try Norton antivirus and see if it can remove the virus. Good luck

Another way is to use System Restore if you are using XP/Pro. I will really like to see some people answers to this issue. I can belt they would never find the solution.
Unless you have access to Window Runtime level signal commands to understand what is giving the shutdown command, and the answer is no you don't.
Remember, I am not Microsoft or work for them all my contribution here is mere recommendations. You can take it or leave it. As I can see here my recommendation is the only forthcoming one.
If you don't have recommendation or solution just don't come and show your snazzy words and disappear.
PS Make sure your System Restore is to the last point before this issue started

for example if you're using win XP, u might try installing a higher OS like win server 2003 or Vista and try accessing those files from the new OS. There things to keep in mind though, the filesystem and the partition.
If where u saved the files was partitioned with(example) NTFS make sure that the file system u will use for the new OS is going to be NTFS. because FAT can't view/access NTFS, but NTFS can view/access FAT.
when installing the new OS create a new partition from your existing free space, leave the OS that has the files alone, or u will end up 4cking the files up.

My another recommendation is to run a dual boot. Let the first active boot be set to the hd (Hard Drive) that is ok (Working). Login to window and access the second hd, see if you can copy or retrieve your files.
Come on, one of this recommendation has got to work for you. Good luck.

Hey dude, it's really easier than yu think. With this method, u'll need another pc with either wireless lan or a lan cable for networking. I'll skip some step here assuming yu already know how to network 2 pc's and get them 2 see each other. 1. Share the folder containing the hidden files on the network so that pc 2 can see them. 2. If pc 2 can't see them Click TOOLS-FOLDER OPTIONS-VIEW-VIEW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS 3. Click OK Now yu should be able 2 see your hidden files from pc 2. Hope this helps. ikeobidi@yahoo.com
