GtBank Domiciliary Account = N50,000 ?
« on: February 01, 2009, 12:25 AM »

I asked a friend to help me ask at a GTB branch and apparently, its N50,000 to open a domiciliary account (or N10,000 for a current account). Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

Certainly; your friend deceived you. I opened both current and domiciliary acct. with GTB late last year.  To  open current acct. the minimum deposit is #5000. Some branches require having current acct. with them before opening dorm. acct.  The same requirements for the two of them.( 2 reference form; NEPAL bill for proof of address; national passport or driver license; one passport). Provided you have current with GTB; you just fill dorm. opening acct. form and pay minimum deposit of $100 no more. Next time try to make effort on your own to do certain things for yourself when it comes to money. You should have visited any GTB bank before embarking on your friend. No one can like you  more than yourself. Thank God is not more thank #50000. Be careful with such friend.

I guess it depends on the branch.  Some branches like to discourage people, I dunno why.

Hey guys,no need for tempers to flare,I think the friend may probably have talked to an intern in the bank, who obviously knows next-to-nothing about the requirements, but for stupid pride did not want to be seen as not knowing, therefore he/she gave a wrong figure,or the friend may have misrepresented the facts, however they require $200 to open a dollar denominated dom account @ GTB,and $2000 @ standard chartered

When I wanted to open an account with a Bank, the gateman turned me back at the gate and told me the minimum deposit was 80,000 Naira for a savings account.  (This was false.)  Why do you think he did that?  If you have lived in Nigeria, you'd know that banks don't behave reasonably.  They behave as if they are doing you a favor by doing business with you.   And though GtBank is generally an exception to that rule, isn't it possible that some isolated branches are still in the stone (UBA/FirstBank) age?

Or am I wrong about this, people?  Am I the only person banks ever discouraged from opening an account with them?  I remember that when trying to get a domiciliary account, one of the young reps asked me to go back to the university I skipped to get my transcript.  Is that a form of encouragement too?  You are either completely ignorant of banking in Nigeria or you just hate me personally.

They will do that when you must have opened the account and not when you are making enquiry on how/what it takes to open an account as they won't like to scare you away.

actually, this is from personal experience, i opened a current account and a dom account with gtbank completely free of charge, all i did was pay in 5k into the current a few days later just to get it activated.so i guess, it sometimes depends on the branch,

Two things - why are you asking a gateman about opening an account? What do transcripts have to do with opening bank accounts?  Huh

If you want information about account opening, it is not arbitrary and MUST be clearly stated. I don't think it's too much hassle to go into a bank to ask yourself or better yet check on their website if the information is available there.

You can even call the helpdesk number available on GTConnect if you require information but cannot access the internet.

Hehehehe - those are rhetorical questions.  Grin

Since you answered, let me indulge you.  Grin

Ok, even if the gateman tells you that - do you regard him as being competent to advise you as to how much is needed to open accounts? Is that his job? Basically what I'm getting at is that his advice is meaningless and should not be given any credence.

Obviously you didn't ask - in what context was the question asked? Was it needed as evidence of income or identity or what exactly?

Of course I did not regard his opinion as authoritative.  Geez, man, don't type when you're high.

The security man tried to discourage me from opening an account with the bank by giving me false info which I didn't even ask him for.  presido1 says it makes no sense, so I'm trying to make him understand that bank employees do lots of things that make no sense.  Hence the two stories.  That's all.  Geez.

Sorry sir.  Grin

I don't regard a gateman's comments as 'discouraging'. It's like saying you go to a place to buy a house and the gate man tells you the house costs 300,000 and you feel 'discouraged'.  Grin

In essence, a gate man should be completely disregarded and is irrelevant to the conversation. The comment about the bank officials asking for transcripts on the other hand should be probed further. Simply saying they asked for transcripts doesn't give enough context to make a determination of what happened.

Security man trying to discourage you ? Listen to yourself man.Is the security man in charge of opening accounts even though he is employed by the bank?

Is that the Job of the security man. It is either you dont know your rights with respect to whom to deal with in a bank or your are just plain Ignorant. Maybe you should have gotten those transcripts. Joker  Grin
