i love jazz 2 - smooth, cool music that u can just lay down & listen. what fascinates me 'bout jazz is its vocal-less nature - don't need 2 have a voice singing out d lyrics, just instruments & d harmony is absolutely divine.

my favorite jazz artistes; Najee, Pamela Williams, Miles Davids, Gerald Albright, Will Downing, Spirogyra, Charlie Wilson, Kenny G!

fav jazz albums -
Sweet Saxation - Pamela Williams
Just an illusion  - Najee
Breathless  - Kenny G

I'm becoming tired of my old Jazz. anyone want to be a good samaritan in sharing of new Jazz or old ones that I do not have. I love Yanni a lot and I think I have virtually all Yanni's.

@ Miller
Appreciate your effort @ trying to broaden my idea of what jazz should be!Yeah Joshua Redman's okay,as for the old school guys you called,I grew up listening 2 them because those were my dad's favorites, especially John Coltrane, but you didnt call Billy Vaughn nor Herb Albert.Billy Vaughn's my best old timer, particularly his album,"An Old Fashioned Loved Song",I really want to have that album, but I can't even find it on sites like Amazon etc.I need tips on how to get it. It was released in 1972,no.6025 under Paramount Records.I ned you to solve this if you can.I'll try listening to the few of those contemporary jazz artistes you named which I havent heard! Later man.

I did not know that this kind of thread was already on Nairaland be4 i posted mine yesterday, infact i was doing the seach for responses when i stumbled on this. whew! i was extactic. having gone through a lot of the posts i now know there a great number of jazz faithfuls in nairaland. my own problem is that i have been a jazz lover since the late 70s and i used to have quite a large number of cassette recordings but i have lost all over the years. i started looking for some of my favourite artists and i was lucky i ran into one guy at Ladipo that sells pirated cds he was able to get some for me, but most of them are not the old generation i am used to. so will anybody tell me where in Lagos i can get original jazz cds or if you are abroad(out of Naija) we can talk so that we arrange how to go about it (about cost) and how to get to my present location. some of my favourite artistes are: Bob James, The Crusaders, Eric Gayle, Grover Washington Jr., Earl Klugh, Wyton Mersalis, Cedao Watanbe, Ralph Macdonald etc etc.and most probably this great blues icon BB King. By the way does anyone know about one Nigerian called Peter King (Peter Oba)? He returned to Nigeria from abroad sometimes early 80s and i thought he is a great jazzist, but he just went under since all these years .

@ Awoof;
You can always get old collections of Earl Klugh and especially Grover Washington Jnr,around.Just take a stroll to Alaba Market or any CD World outlet nationwide. As for the other ones, they are not really in demand so they may not have been pirated;but you can still get them,if you need an original copy(which will certainly cost you over 2k!) Those are available at Nu Metro Cinema, and I heard there's a jazz club somewhere in Lagos where you can get all those Archival Jazz Cds.I'll find out the exact location because I don't reside in Lagos.Goodluck!!!

Diana Krall….still climbing the ladders? I go fight you o

Please let it be known that Ms Krall captivates me with her music every time unlike the favorites mentioned above (KG, Coltrane, Miles, etc)
When I heard her the first time, I wan mara…, i say who be this?

Tell me of any woman in her league that delivers the same quality of jazz music.
When she sings I envision the beauty in her soul and heart, like it beckons onto me.
Plus, she has also added a feminine warm appeal to various jazz numbers of the notables.

To top it off, she is BEAUTIFUL.
(Lord knows i get tired hearing those brothas.)

Oh, my all time favorite (eventhough tagged Afrobeat) is no other but Baba himself Eba mi da, Fela Anikulapo Kuti simply because he speaks of issues we all can identify with in Nigeria, SUFFER SUFFER, YELLOW FEVER, DEAD BODY, HUMAN RIGHTS,ETC.
(him pickin them dey try but no measure up to their papa)

thanks a million for your response i appreciate it. Me too i am not in naija right now i would have probably benefited more from this thread if i had joined nairaland before leaving naija, but it is better late than never. i saw one or two other addresses in some earlier posts, i have kept them in my diary. by the way where is the location of this Nu Metrol Cinema in Lagos? and please do not forget to update me with name of the club you talked about, i hope it is not Jazz Hole on Awolowo Road Ikoyi ' cause i have that already. In case you get it you can communicate me on my mail giaoguntuase@gmail.com

I'm quite surprised going through this thread to see that some people really don't know what jazz is.
A post mentioned ENYA?Huh What has Enya got to do with jazz?
Najee is an instrumentalist, and does instrumentals not jazz.
If you can differentiate that from jazz, its like saying juju and fuji music are the same.
For me, the jazz bands are magical, Fourplay, Spyrogyra and even our own Jazz 38 [I hope they still do the jams at OASIS in Ikoyi on Fridays, I haven't been there since December]

afetr moving round the capital here, i have been able to locate some dvd/cd shops where i have been able to pick a few pirated copies (from Indonesia). suprisingly, cds/dvds from Indonesia have better quality than those  in Nigeria and they are all cheaper only $1.00. (N130.00) they even have them on mp3 based cds. i was able to get one mp3 cd of almost all Yanni's collection i play it for hours. i have also been able to buy 1 Dave Kosh collection of his bests, its fantastic, so also a cd of Joe Sample of the good old days 'The Crusaders' i know i will pump up my collections a lot before i scram from this location Wink

I expected reactions such as this, Truth is, RuuDie, you should check your own facts well; while Najee played contemporary jazz in the 70s, he was more successful performing with Instrumentalists like Paul Jackson Jr and Marcus Miller.
He touts as one of the innovators of "urban jazz", but isn't acknowledged as one

@donjohano:
Oh, yes, my friend!  You're talking very good stuff!  Keep that coming!

@topic:
And, while we're keeping it coming, let's not be contentious about semantics.  We're jazz lovers, here, so let's play nice!

Yes, there is instrumental jazz and there is vocal jazz, just as there are instrumental and vocal variants of other genres of music.

Let's agree to respect that there are various types of jazz (and yes, I know that, itself, opens a can of worms, so to speak, but we must not exclude what could, potentially, be beneficial to the art).

@drionelli - I'm a guitarist in my spare time (acoustic) since I was 13. But listening to Charlie Parker made me go out and buy an alto saxophone in Cambridge Circus, London, at the age of 19. Had a few lessons - realized I wasn't going to be Bird, although I'm not a bad acoustic guitarist.

Charlie Parker affected every instrument - but the guys on this thread have no idea.

Though someone did mention Louis Armstrong - VERY important. HUGELY important - Purely for the work he did int he 20s alone.

OK - modern jazz - Wes Montgomery - heard of him? The supremo of modern jazz guitar. You never heard of him. Don't mean a shit - believe me, George Benson and Earl Klugh heard of him. Ah, forget it.

maybe we need to actually look for a source that will tell us what jazz is all about. From my own list i gave in my oldies jazz artistes, i know in most cases the owners of the bands specialised in one instrument, use that as the lead instrument, while other instruments accompanied them and in most cases they stick to this as their symbol, they even snap pictures for their albums holding such instruments. as such:
Bob James 'was or' is a keyboard virtuoso, Grover Washington Jr is a saxophonist so also is Dave Koz et-al, our own Fela; and Tee  Mac is a flutist. Eric Gayle was a great electric guitarist, Ralph Macdonald was the greatest ppercussionistof that era, he appeared in almost all the jazz albums then. as a matter of fact there was a lot of collaboration among the artistes then. pick any album you will see most of these artistes i mentioned featuring. Ralph Macdonald even featured our own great Jimi Solanke in one his albums then . Jimi made some voice introduction in Yoruba. Also at that time Wyton Mersailis (perdon if i can't get the actual spelling of the names its been long Wink tried out our dear talking drum in one in one of his albums.
On a lighter mood. In those good old days when we were just coming into jazz world and actually it was Grover WWashingtonwe first knew, we thought he was deaf because most of his works never had vocals Grin Grin Grin

Hmmmmm!

I LOVE JAZZZZZ!

Jazz is the Art of Improvisation,  If u play any musical instrument without a jazzy touch then you aint ready for

improvement yet.

By the way Yanni aint Jazz o, Yanni is simply classical, any true jazz artist will agree with me o!

I don't really have a favourite jazz artist because it's all about creativity,  and i really appreciate difrenet styles, by the way i'm

listenin to RADIO-IO JAZZ WITH ITUNES ONLINE,  This guys are tight o!

Please if u want to learn how to play Jazz on the piano, I have beautiful jazz piano video lectures for ya ALL!,

Ha "Michel Camilo Trio- NARDIS" wan finish me here with TRITONES!!!

Nigerians are still growing with jazz although many of them are still doin the copy and paste stuff!

@ Ruudie
Thanks for Disagreeing with Makin on Najee not being a jazz artiste!
@ Makin
I think you should listen to Najee's "Heart Like Mine".When you do,you wont tell me he ain't a jazz artiste.
And do we define music by what the artiste is known for or the musical piece itself? Some songs of Yanni's like "Adagio in C Minor"and "Tribute" can be called Classical, while his "Dance with A Stranger" is undoubtedly Jazz! Some of Billy Vaughn's songs are called Easy Listening e.g "Sail Along Silvry Moon",while a whole lot of his other songs are generally accepted as Jazz.Like Miller said,Jazz is so broad,so much so that you can't really claim to define it accurately, and it just has to be dynamic, like other genres;so I don't want to hear y'all claiming that real Jazz was done only by those aged old timers!Times must, and always do change!Jazz lovers love to hate Kenny G,but I can't deny loving him for his own unique flavor, his Soprano Sax sounds lioke it was constructed for him alone!
No one has mentioned Boney James?
Abeg I no wan vex,so I no wan make another person call Enya name for here, abeg OOOh!
