And since the lady in question is just the acting VC , me thinks there is enuff time for Baro and his cohorts to make a case for Prof. Obesere as the Permanent VC.

Quote from: Baro on February 12, 2009, 03:37 AM

A qualified Bini should emerge as substantive VC  immediately after the University Governing council is constituted. Therefafter if the Binis insist  they want to continue to churn out VCs back to back, then they would be TRIBALISTS, but as it stands now, The Binis are simply  fighting for their overdue right

@Baro,

That is a good suggestion, but must this emergence of a "qualified Bini" respect the established appointment procedure (EAP)? Won't you say that following the EAP is essential in determining who is "qualified" or not?

For many reasons, I disagree with your suggestion. It erroneously assumes that the EAP is political process. Yes, under the military, VC appointments were sometimes done by fiat, however, the EAP is not usually a political appointment. Such an appointment, to the best of my knowledge, is based on qualifications, proven integrity, management skills, leadership abilities, etc. A committee ultimately sits down to choose from a wide pool of applicants.

Why should such a process be jettisoned to accommodate the wishes of one relatively unknown organization? If that organization is unhappy with the outcome of the process, shouldn't they (and you, Baro) be asking detailed questions about how the process of appointment works and what can be done to improve upon it if need be? That no Bini man has ever been appointed VC of UNIBEN, if true, may seem deliberate, however, the real questions should be directed at the process and not the result. If you abandon the process for quick-fixes, the respite may be shorter than expected.

According to Baro, the guy is the DVC for Academics in Uniben and by some hierachy (best known to Baro) , the DVC for Academics becomes the VC  when and if the incumbent VC leaves. And to make matters soothing (at least to the Bini warlords) , the guy na bini guy.

i just graduated from ben in '07 and i must say Nwanze did a good job by speeding my exit date from the university after the Obe Rasaq saga.

i don't care who or where the VC comes from,i just want him to touch the lives of his students.

BTW VCs are not appointed by any council or committee - they are usually elected by the senate of the university. There's element of politicking there and any Professor is qualified to apply to be the VC of any university where vacancy exists - irrespective of the University where the Professor is from.

So if the Binis are interested in "capturing" the VCship of UNIBEN in the next dispensation, the best they should do is start campaigning now - not on the pages of newspapers or in Nairaland for that matter, but getting close to those who will eventually cast their votes in selecting the final 3 candidates, whose names will then be forwarded to the Presidency by the university council for appointment - where there's no concensus candidate.

Finally, I would want to know the relative ratio of Bini Professors at Uniben to the other Professors from other parts together

There are too many Ibos already in Edo state giving everybody sleepless nights as armed robbers. We certainly do not want them again as uniben vcs. Can they attempt occupying that office in kano? Remember the uprising prior to the onset of the civil war

The new VC of UniBen is said to be Igbo, but she has been in that university for long where she rose through the ranks and weathered many storms to become the DVC. If she deserves to be the VC, then so be it. The FGN appointed her based on merit and there is precedence with other appointments. These Igbos find themselves in non Igbo places because of the Igbo spirit of living anywhere in Nigeria. If an Edo wants to be VC in Yorubaland, for example, he should get employment in Yorubaland and rise through the ranks. When it is his due to head the establisment, he should get it without anyone asking him to relinguish the position simply because he is not Yoruba. How can you stay in London and expect to get a job in Canada? The registrar and indeed the Bursar of the Federal University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State are Yorubas. Heaven has not fallen and Igbos have not complained.

BENIN—THE crisis rocking the University of Benin (UNIBEN) over the appointment of Professor Uche Gbenedio as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University (UNIBEN) was laid to rest yesterday, as the Governing Council of the institution confirmed the election of the Provost, College of Medicine of the university, Professor Emmanuel Kubenje as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Gbenedio’s removal was sequel to a directive to the senate from the Governing Council of the university, led by Professor Mmuendaga Jibo, which mandated the senate of the university to conduct a proper election so as to ensure that due process was followed
.

It was learnt, however, that when the senate sat last Friday for the meeting, a court order was served on the senate to stop further deliberation on the election of a new acting vice-chancellor, but Vanguard learnt that the meeting went on after all and Professor Kubenje emerged as the new acting vice-chancellor.

Chairman of the Governing Board, Professor Jibo, who confirmed the election of Professor Kubenje as the Acting Vice-Chancellor to newsmen, when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Adams Oshiomhole at Government House Benin City, said the earlier appointment of Professor Gbenedio did not follow due process.

According to him, a mistake of the past had to be corrected.

He said:  “We have a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education to follow due process in the appointment of an acting vice-chancellor and that is what we have done.

“The issue is that the former acting vice-chancellor was appointed before the Council came in. And according to the university law, only council can properly appoint.

So we are accelerating the process of appointing a substantive vice-chancellor now, that was part of our deliberation today”.

Asked about the court order stopping the appointment of a new acting vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Jibo said “there was no court injunction. We are in a democratic system, any body aggrieved can go to court and when the court rules in his or her favour, we shall respect court decision”.

Commenting also, the new Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kubenje, said they are working hard for the emergence of a substantive vice-chancellor, disclosing also that he would not be running for the position.

“ As it is now, there are no aggrieved party any more. We are the aggrieved party before because we wanted due process and we got it,” he said.
