@ bilms

in other cultures, a mother's heritage is accepted as the child's, not the father's.

Besides, you can claim anyone you wish. . . .Nigeria is associated with too many ills so I don't really blame people for denying their country.

Those who do have their reasons and that is their palava.

bilms:

So they should rather deny their mother's nationality, like say being Nigerian is more important, abi? Besides what makes this Nigeria of a country so special?

if someone has an American born mother, then they're legally American, barring certain circumstances.

Correction: Any human, with parents of any nationality (including Martians) born on any "American soil" (including Guam), is automatically (no questions asked) an American.

What city in America do you live in?
I've met only 1 kid out of all the Nigerians kids i've met that claim he's american, not Nigerian.
Most i know call themselves Nigerian-American or something like that.
Re: Why Do Nigerians Claim Other Nationalities When They Go Abroad? by Nobody: 10:53am On Feb 15, 2009
its known worldwide that having a Nigerian passport is good for NOTHING when traveling,  i was born in France and until i was 18yrs old i had dual nationality and had to choose one then. its easier for me to ask for a visa to go to Nigeria and be "visa worries free" for other countries in the world than having a 9ja passport and having to ask for a visa wherever i would try to go. i know my origins/history/family background and that's all that matters to me.
in europe we don't have this "african european" thingy like in the states so most people i know who were born up here from 9ja parents call themselves French, British, Dutch or whatever because that's what they are, i am french with Nigerian ancestry.

oh My God.

i cant beleive this.

well, i think u guys need to change ur view about Nigeria.

The only reason y many people deny Nigeria is because of the situation here. even many nigerian claim they are jamaican, some calin to be south africa without no source.

but i think Nigerian will get better very soon.

all these people claiming that they can choose american because there mum is an american, i am very sure if there father is american and there mum is Nigeria no one would. they only choose america because of the wealth.

but u guys should watch. Nigeria is getting better and u guys will be ashamed of urself.

My mum is also an american, but still Niger still remain the bomb.
due to ur laziness make u choose us. u dont want to work but eat. they prefer an already made stuff.

american there to where they are by strugle and hard work. so u guys dont want to work just eat.

no wonder niger never better.

i am a proud Nigeria. and any where i go i will say God bless Nigeria.

That statement has been uttered for generations.
Since Donkey was a boy - and donkey's live a long time.

How soon is soon? You spend too much time worrying about the issues of others.
Be who you want to be, and be happy.

Most of you are first generation Africans/Nigerians born abroad and are already in denial of yourself/culture. Flipping hell, the west cannot be good for African children if all it does is to make them have such low self-esteem.

At least black/African American were held in slavery and forcedly divest of their culture and yet some call them akata derogatorily.

Re: Why Do Nigerians Claim Other Nationalities When They Go Abroad? by agathamari(f): 6:32pm On Aug 27, 2009
i think your confusing nationality with ethnicity. nationality is what country(s) you have legal citizenship from. ethnicity is the country(s) regardles of nationality that your ancestors are from.

example. my nationality is ameican. my ethnicity is irish, german and danish.

there are actualy conditions on citizenship. its been few months but when i was pregnant the consolate told me since i am a us citizen i must have lived in the us no longer then 5 years before the delivery (if out of country) and must live a min of 4 years in the us before the childs 14 birthday to obtain perminant citizenship of the baby (the problem obama was having regarding his because hawaii was a territory and there is no specific guidlinds of whether or not at that time territories were granted automatic citizenship) there are also similar requirements on foriegners giving birth in the us (after so many pregant women have come to the us to get citizenship for thier children and themselves throgh thier child (but those requirements are months not years)

Re: Why Do Nigerians Claim Other Nationalities When They Go Abroad? by last2laugh: 10:11pm On Aug 27, 2009
Well I haven´t ran into anything like that. Actually where I live Nigerians seem to be proud of their homeland.

And for a child to be for example an American on a paper doesn´t mean he/she isn´t Nigerian too. For me it´s more about the culture than the papers.
Re: Why Do Nigerians Claim Other Nationalities When They Go Abroad? by EDOYORUBA: 9:16am On Aug 28, 2009
SIMPLE AS, Most nigerian abroad that claim other nationalities are simply illegal immigrants in those countries.

The first thing that comes to the mind of most authorities once they hear the name "Nigerian" "is fraud, or immigration offences". Claiming to be Nigerian potentially opens up a can of worms for them. I say, I don meet one naija guy for London wey no get paper dere, Him name nah "Dele"
as in yoruba name "bamidele". This dude calls himself Dale, DALE, to everybody. and claims to be born in america, most of all has a fake amerinaijabritish accent.Lol
