Western Hypocrisy in action:
John Hawkyns initiated English slave trade in 1562. Hawkyns took three ships to Sierra Leone, secured some 300 slaves mainly by capturing them from Portuguese vessels, brought them across the Atlantic to Hispaniola, and sold them for a handsome profit. Queen Elizabeth I was appalled when she first learned about Hawkyns's slave trade venture, but after Hawkyns showed her how profitable the voyage had been, "Good Queen Bess" changed her attitude entirely and contributed a large ship for Hawkyns's next slaving expedition in 1564.

You seem to forget that Europe at that time wasn't as liberal as it is today. They believed in the rod as much as we do today. Haven't you read works of fiction from those times?
The same way of change that brought the abolition of slavery and the idea of human rights is the one that brought homosexual rights as well as non violent child discipline. The world is simply getting wiser.
This post is in reference to your graphic post in which you showed a picture of a badly beaten black slave.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! The same way of change that brought the abolition of slavery and the idea of human rights So apparently white people are lying when they say power does not give up power except in the face of equal power. Nat Turner a Christian preacher kills several white masters, within 30 years slavery ends in America. White people give Africans weapons to help them to defeat the Germans. Whites give up African colonization, when they can not get the guns back. is the one that brought homosexual rights as well as non violent child discipline. In Sparta Greece, white war soldiers were given a 12 year old boy to be their homosexual slave as he taught the boy how to be a soldier. This kept the young men in line and disallowed mothers from using their sons to rebel against the horrible rules for women. Non-violent discipline. The world is simply getting wiser. LOL Yeah, if you where rose colored glasses.

I think Nigerians are the biggest Hypocrites when it comes to Religion. But for everyother thing? am not too sure about that. White people like to pretend in public that they are such good people but peep into their house. An Example: There is this Mother i know always talking in a very sweet voice to her kids. But one day , one fine day she did not see that someone was looking (me) the voice changed to the voice of a demon. She kicked her daughter against the car and slapped the other one. They like to openly be what is expected of them. Nigeria will not pretend if the child annoys them in public they do not care they will use the demon voice to shout at the child and not (wait till they get home for that)

I disagree.
People are generally the same hypocrites regardless of country.
But, I personally think that white people (in America & Europe) are bigger hypocrites not b/c they are evil or anything like that but b/c that is there culture (i.e. their idea of kindness).
For instance, a white young lady might smile in your face then talk behind your back whereas a black person (Naija or not) will say "Bitch don't smile at me. Don't nobody like you" or whatever. It's mean but not hypocritical; with this person, you know where you stand. Black people (Naija or not) are a bit more prideful about being, er, "emotionally transparent".

Chinani,
Boo Yow!
You got it exactly right. Perfectly right. No African American could have said it better.
My mother (my brother's mother) regularily puts whites out of her house by cussing them out, all the time.
I am quite sure they leave, going blacks are just horrible, why did she act like that, I'm not racist.
They assume that she did not understand the numerous insults that they started the minute they walked in the door, things they would not have done to an older white lady.
Not realizing that their attitude of this little nigger is going to do what I say and I am in charge of her house was obvious from the minute they walked in and said something foul.
They think their smiling covered all that up.

I think we need to define hypocrisy. Its been used in different contexts in this thread (historical, political, religious, socio-cultual spectrums).
It is good for Nigerians to self-reflect and express self-criticism.
I am not Nigerian. I want to know more of "the Nigerian culture" and people. However the little knowledge i have had was coloured by the misconceptions that exist world-wide about Nigerian people being good at deception, law-breaking and unfaithfullness.
If we take the definition of hyocrisy as "insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not really have" Then Nigerians are perceived by many to be this way.
However, we can not generalize and i am of opinion that not all N people are hypocritical people, despite the fact that i personally have been badly lied to by a N.

@Brownsuga - Its amazing how you have turned this issue into calling us Nigerians a bunch of hypocrites all in the name of your relationship gone sour. This is what I have a hard time coming to grips with - If the Nigerian Prof you were involved with hurt you so badly, why are you so keen on learning about Nigerian people and culture as you have stated ? You mean the Nigerian hurt your feelings, led you on etc. to the point that you are going to do everything possible to learn all there is to about Nigerians and their culture Yet you want to sit here and write a thesis on Nigerian hypocrisy You need to check yourself. @topic - Why was the original title of this thread changed ?

@Gnature, u misunderstood me badly. I was saying the exact opposite.

I don't think i misunderstood you at all. http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-21996.64.html#msg608490You dissed us and then covered it up all within one post. If you meant well, then you need to put your point across in a more appropriate manner. What was the point of you writing the following ? "If we take the definition of hyocrisy as "insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not really have" Then Nigerians are perceived by many to be this way"What is this supposed to be ? A complement ??

A whites never lied to a white?
A Indian has never lied to an Indian?
If you bring this debate to that level, then it is no debate.
Chinani wins. Hypocrisy is the same in all people.
It wouldn't matter if one Naija lied to you, because surely one brownsugar has lied to you as well.
I think Gnature makes a good point.

I don't know why but often times people just don't understand what it is i am trying to say. And I am even hesitant in explaining my previous post for fear i will mess things up again.
However, i am trying to post or rather re-post my already stated opinion becoz i am saddened by the extent of the misunderstanding. Gnature i didnt like your attitude, the quote you took was NOT my opinion, ok? I said that there are many people who see N people that way BUT i don't. Even after explaining you still attack me, it is intimidating and downgrading to demonstrate such aggresiveness and to quote me out of text by refering to personal issues that have nothing to do with the topic.
It is no secret that there are severe misconceptions of N. I didnt creat those and i tried to defend that in my opinion. Was it the definition that annoyed you? Or my associating it with the perceptions of N people in the world?
And having said that, i think your accusations say more about you than they do about me. I am here to understand, not create havoc, that is not my nature. I hope i clarified things and i apologize for the mixup.

Brownsugar,
Your misunderstood, really because your way of saying things is so well understood.
If I had a nickel for everytime I have heard "my parents, friends, co-workers, the rest of the world, thinks lowly of African Americans --- but not me, I don't agree with that even though an African American ___[insert crime or moral offense]___ me one day".
I would be a billionaire.
What are you supposed to get a cookie for not being like the rest of the world, even though you have experienced what the rest of the world complains about?
What is your point exactly?

Your attitude towards her seems to prove her point about Nigerians. Showing superiority due to nationality is the sole reason this world is in such a shitty state. The issue was if N people are hypocrtical , When we have to deal with people like Gnature and his breastfeeding mum Dress-whatever (in whom he obviously confides for every little step taken) i am afraid that is pure Hypocrisy at its best, How can one be so stupid and blind to multiple explanations and an apology!?? BS, u didnt have to apologize, there is a global perception of N people and there is YOUR perception. Anyone who ustands English can distinguish bween the two.

I am the one that is being breast fed and needs to take English classes ? Young Man, you need to calm down. There is no need to act childish here. If you took the time to read the thread, you will have a better understanding of what transpired.
Brownsuga was trying to say that many people see Nigerians as hypocrites but she doesn't. I understand that. It was the way she went about putting her point across that I objected to. All she had to say was "Many see Nigerians as hypocrites, but I don't" or something along those lines.
In addition, I had written Ynot previously that I have forgotten about this issue. So I really don't know what warranted your childish behavior.
People often cut in the middle of threads without having the slightest inclination of what is going on and remotely resort to name calling.
