Yes Nigerians have  plenty of God in their heads but i don't think they can ever have too much. We are actually very religious people... but as for Holy, that is an entirely differnt thing.

I think the problem of immorality and curruption you see around is as a result of visonlessnes. And the bible tells us that where there is no vison the people perish. It dosnt mean they are killed. It means they are brought down and crushed.

We do not have any spelt out vision as a nation. We do not know where we are going or what we want to achieve as a nation. Like a child born out of rape...he/she was not planned for. In America for instance, they can tell where their founding fathers had wanted the country to become and they all follow in that direction. They have a national goal.

Who were are founding fathers? We cannot even agree on their names. This is because no one wants to praise those from a different tribe. And remember this is one country where only the dead are celebrated...the living are despised. We do not honour our heroes. and this must stop. The History we studied in school had nothing to do with Nigeria. We studied the Benin, Oyo, and kanuri empires and these ar not Nigeria. it is like studying the early man.

So since our present leadership were not handed down aything, all they are doing is administration. Distribution of the countries resources. We need to do more than administer, we need to become producers. We need to have a common vision for ourselves as a nation...

So until we come together as a nation and discuss...'What is our goal as a nation?...Why was Nigeria born?' The plight of our people will not change  and they only option they will  have is to turn to God for help.

Our education system needs to be reformed and tailored in line with our vision.

In Europe, the goverment is their God. They depend on government for food, shelter, security and so on and the govt tries its best to provide. But in a coutry like Nigeria...You had better trust in  God or you will have yourself (and not the government) to blame.

And God has actually heard our cry and that change is about to begin Prasie God!

I bvelieve in Nigeria and Nigerians and so does God.

We are not ashamed to honour and reverence God in our daily lives for He has saved our Nation from wars, secessions and even natural disasters.

And don't forget, God has a way of calling back to order, those nations that neglect Him...those that think they do not need Him. He gives them a reason to cry out to Him; to mourn, fast and pray until they find Him and give Him His rightful place of honour and reverence in their affairs.

Proverbs 14:34 - Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

Nigerians are intelligent, strong, hard working, happy and God loving people. This is something to be proud of!

Nigeria is changing because people are working hard to make a change...

i thing your post needs a rephrasing to make an impact in nairaland. I think that if nigerians can redirect their belief in "God" to hard work then the country will change. The average Nigerian calls uses "God" to cover his laziness.

I don't think there can ever be too much of God, although a lot of people use it to cover up fro laziness

It used to irritates me when me and some people talk about the state of this nation and all they can say is "God will do it". God will do it, this i know; but saying God will do it without taking any concrete step to challenge all the people ruining this country is like saying i want to eat without making preparation to go get the food.

Until we can all remove the Holy-holy make believe, Nigeria may never progress as a nation.

Hardwork is not our problem in Nigeria. The problem is direction. We have always been hard-working people, but we have over the years discovered that it is as though were not making any headway. There is no direction. Hardwork is no longer rewarded the way it used to be. Listen to reports of Nigerians overseas and you will know that Nigerians are naturally hardworking people.

But hardwork alone will not solve the problem, we need a vision, a purpose, a plan, a direction. This is beyond making policies  and coming up with high sounding projects that never reach their compiletion or fulfilment. Our efforts need to be directed towards a common goal and vision which has to be spelt out. Every nation has a soul. What i am addressing here is the soul of our nation. What do we want to acheive as a nation.

If hardwork were evreything, the truck pushers could have been the richest fellows on earth.
Force applied+no distance covered=no work done. This is called the journey to nowhere.

If there is a clearly spelt out plan and vision, and everybody sees its workability and identifies with the plan, people will be motivated to work hard because they can see clearly where they are channelling their energies. They will not need to be forced to work hard. When people work and they do not see that their efforts are peoperly channelled towards a worthy course, they are discouraged.

We should come together and come up with a plan and Vision for Nigeria which is not based on dictates from International bodies such as IMF and the likes. We need a vision for ourselves.

Habakkuk 2:2 - And the LORD answered me: "Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so he may run who reads it.

When the vision is clear, everyone will be motivated to run with it.

I think there's a difference between being religious and being holy. Nigerians are too religious.

Great thread Trae.  Wow!!! The replies in this thread make me want to stand and clap.  I thought all the posts will be about oh we can't have too much god but you guys definitely have good heads on your shoulders to realize that this is a problem we are facing that's seriously eroding our work habit in the country.  Too many people are very content to sit back and say god will provide.  The most annoying is when I see our theiving leaders on tv thanking god for everything he has done for them while they're robbing the country blind.  Sometimes I wonder why god doesn't just strike them down right there on the spot.  If someone asks you how did you become successful enough to buy this big house and you say oh it's god's work when infact I know and you know that you stole the money then aren't you indirectly praising god for helping you steal?

Bringing up God in each and all of their communications just adds zero value to the content of what they're trying to say. It's only meant to prove how faithfull/chaste/good/... they are

It's a substitute for thinking and by doing so they want to exempt themselves from criticism. I have never seen a truly faithfull religious person wearing his religion on his sleeves for all to see.

In most cases, it's pure hypocrisy

fox the are not praising God.  i call them  God users. they don't know God.  infact most people only know the God they are introduced to.

what lack great work ethics.  most nigerians cannot work well without being supervised and sadly most think everything should fall from above without working for it.  no wonder theives strive in the society like wild fire.

there is a God no doubt as for nigerians serving Him, i reserve my comment.

a scripture says  some serve me with their mouth  but their heart is far from me.

Anyone truely serving God will demonstrate excellence because God is excellent. And He gives his children an excellent Spirit. So God should not be blamed for the lazy. That is a personal problem.

In fact the word commands the christian to serve with fear his master. the scriptures encourage dilligence and hardwork.

Ephesians 4:28 - Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give ...

Colossians 3:22 - Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.

The true christain is a man or woman of excellence.

Daniel 6:3 - Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm

Where does this the nonsense about being irreligious equals being 'western' come from???

America is one of the most ridiculously religious countries in the world...

Being African has nothing do to with being religious...being African means your family is from Africa, nothing more, nothing less...

To be religious does not mean doing God's will, in Nigeria here we have people pretending to be saints on earth hence all the wahala we have in Nigeria.

If people do the right thing God will surely be right with them.

Thanks man. America is one of the worlds most religious countries too. i hate it when people talk rubbish, but i even hate it more when people say that africans are more righteous than everybody else. What nonsense. Thatz y we can't solve simple problems in our countries. We have the worlds highest number of problems and we still see people coming here to talk bull. Is it any coincedence that those european countries that are less religious are the best places to live in the world eg the scandanavian countries?

I agree ooo. Too much God is a problem abi,  (trini girl is learnig pidgin sha)  Grin

Nah just kidding.  I think the real issue is not too much God, but too much religous BS.  So much BS that it deceives and robs you from enjoying the life that God blessed you with.

Silly hangups that stem from religious brainwashing like covering your head in church, marrying a virgin, mandatory tithing etc etc etc, faith without works ,  just sitting back and "believing God" to do it.

Religion is the real problem here.

@Topic

I know people tend to think that the Knowledge of God is righteousness.  This is a lie coming from the pit of hell. We are supposed to follow God with our heart. Simple and short.

There is the need for us to know that we are to serve God with our hearts not our heads alone.
