@ FRESH -B

With all due respect i cannot respect those igbos who perpetrate or even condone this Osu custom.  It is not logical, and is is unspeakably cruel, it is UNGODLY, hypocritical and discriminatory.  Your suggestion that i respect it is like asking me to respect the views of whites who felt slavery was a good idea -  hell no, i don't have to, and i wont.  Those people that believe in it are backward, self-righteous and utterly deserving of my contempt.  I do not care what is considered "best practice " among a bunch of heathens!  I think it is ridiculous, how can you ask me to respect something that i think is BS?   Huh

EVen those igbos that follow it themselves recognise that its basis is ludicrous, but they follow the custom merely because they are afraid of speaking against it.  Afraid of being disowned or ex-communicated by their communities.  You want me to follow-suit in sheep-like fashion and i wont do that, sorry.

I had never heard of this Osu thing until a few years ago, and i conclude that this is because my daddy had the good fortune of being born in a more progressive igbo village.  I remain grateful of this. Wink

@ Laudate

"Don't understand what you mean by osu is a past tense. Kindly explain. You can only call something a past tense, if that thing no longer exists or if it is dead, buried & there is no longer any trace of it. Unfortunately, the  'osu'  issue is still alive & thriving in many communities in the East, even as we speak. So why are you using the word "past tense?" I don't get it o!"[/b]

It can be present tense to you only and only if you dwell in it and live in and by it.
I call it past because its dead and dead forever. non-Igbos who no their cultures are no better than mine always like to drag matters like this, expand it and then spread it to claim they no when they no not.
I DO NOT USE IT AS A BENCHMARK AGAINST ANY LADY for mi marriage.

@ Es,

"All i can say is THANK GOD my daddy did not raise us in one of these backward, idol-worshipping igbo villages!! "

It will be a very good idea if you treat mi culture with respect--It is Best Practice.
It is unequivocally absurd to see how we jump to accept other cultures tha are more deeply connected to satanism than ours. "i like rock muzic because, , i like halloween because, , i like to show my modernism by behaving dirty with my man/woman on the high streets because,  etc without knowing their origin and wha they glorify.

No culture can be perfect to 100%. not even the Yisreali's. But where we see a negative sign, all we need to do is to avoid it, correct others in understanding and diplomatically to win their hearts.

We got hyper carried by other cultures that we hav lost ALL OUR VITALLY IMPORTANT VALUES-- you don't hear the good ancient rythem again. Not even our instruments; opi, ogele/ogene, samba, ekwe etc theses are intruments that Ekekereuwa/Ekekeleuwa would hav Loved. they create the perfect melody.

Its stupid to spite people on pains of discrimination and brutality ones ancestors went through. People complain that most of the Deutsch countries are racist especially on blacks "colored", and now a tradition who ostracizes one for the his lineage. Whats the difference?
I'D gladly Cheesy marry an Osu if we are both in love

@ Eso

I do hope you don't misunderstand mi. i do not ask you to bow to the brutality against God and man which is also prafanity, vulgarity, blasphemy and idolatry. i have rather asked that you  mind your language such as this; daddy did not raise us in one of these backward, idol-worshipping igbo villages!!

you can be constructive and not destructive. also remember tha you can't tie ya children not to go to Igboland.
i love it tha you sound like a Christian. but itll b fantastic and maltonic if you show love, compassion and understain in your language and attitudes as Christ would want you to

Of course I'D marry an "Osu". It's folks mentality that makes "Osu's" out as outcasts. As far as I'm concerned, God made them, as he made me! If marrying an "Osu" would turn my family against me, then so be it. It would just mean my family isn't worth having.

hiya  Wink. How is Colchester?
I agree with you there, most times you just have to live your own life and do what makes you happy.

@ Kula: Colchester's fine, thanks. 3 days of sunshine in a row, so hopefully, no more freak weather!  Smiley

Sure, there are customs and traditions, but I'D say this particular one is pretty outdated.

More than 30 mile! It's exactly 50 miles to drive from Braintree to Eltham, South London. I'D say, more like 80 miles. Hmmm.

Re: Would You Marry An Osu?
« #176 on: July 08, 2007, 07:50 PM »

Me posh? Not at all! It's just that, uptil January this year, I lived in Braintree, and have a friend that lives in Eltham. I zero the tripmeter before each trip, so know it's 50 miles from Braintree to Eltham. Add another 25, and take a different route (probably the A1) and it'll be in the region of 80-odd miles.

@ Fresh B -

Very simply, I consider those people who condone this practice to be backward,  i say what i mean and mean what i say.  If you do not participate in the ostracisation of Osus, then my comments do not apply to you.  Its that simple.

@esoterik
the fact that your surname is nwosu does not mean you are osu. if i have my facts right, you assumed you are osu b/c your maiden name is nwosu. well that's not so.

the osu thingy is a terrible stain on ibo culture. anyway, i do believe it will go with time. i personally see it as a form of racism. some peeps may disagree. no wahala. but that's how i see it.
