10 cultists drown in Rivers Written by George Onah Thursday, 26 February 2009
Port Harcourt—No fewer than 10 suspected cultists are feared drowned in Elelenwo River, in the outskirt of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while trying to escape arrest when security men closed-in on them at an alleged initiation ground. Vanguard gathered that two bodies have so far been recovered as at press time, yesterday and it was discovered that most of the dead were students of some tertiary institutions in the state.
Contacted, Spokesman of the Joint Task Force, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa told Vanguard that the security men who swooped on the degenerates “may have been JTF of the police wing” but that information on the issue was still scanty.
It was learnt that over 30 people were involved in the initiation ritual, six of who were picked up at the place but those who attempted to evade arrest simply “jumped into the river on sighting the security men.”
Witnesses said the crowd of initiates and those conducting the initiation “suddenly scampered in different directions when their sentinels signaled police presence, following which some dived into the river and attempted to swim across” but were swept off by the furious current of the river.
A source said majority of the boys were from the surrounding communities of the river and had traveled from various schools and places to embrace the nocturnal group, “only for them to meet their doom.”
Pairs of shoes and scores of trousers, shirts and caps littered the bank of the river, just as it was learnt that some people have been mandated to fish out the remaining corpses, some of which may have ‘sailed’ to other parts of the water.
