So now we know that if u want to mention the other schs,u must take their I-20 forms to show at the embassy.

All the best to the Spring 2010 guys!

What i emphasized was not taking two I-20's to the embassy.  There's really nothing wrong mentioning that you got admission to other schools. 99% of candidates apply to at least 2 schools and they are aware.

Heh, not correct. You don't need to take any other I-20 there.
I believe what they asked Smile11 was if he had the admission letter from the other school.
I'm sure the interviewer was just looking for a way to ask more questions. I'll bet you if he had the other admission letters on him, they would have requested for it and started asking questions like "why didn't you pick this school na" "is it because it is more expensive" yada yada yada just to make your "f" up.
Just take the admission letter and I-20 of the school you want to go to.
If they ask for other schools, tell them you didn't bring it. Peropd.

I got thru wit ma Sec educatn in 2002,after that i studied Agriculture in University of Ilorin in contrast to my dream course which is ENGINEERING.i 've just finished NYSC last month. I did SAT in Jan with the score of 1997 and i just did TOEFL last weekend,i ave done CCNA as well.
I am thinking of starting all over again in courses that are relevant to my dream career, and the best i think i could do is to start over again in U.S,Y'know.am just 23,i need u guys advice on the choice of school in U.S (I'm actually considering Texas) and my preparation as regard that and the clues to the interview, and am planning towards Fall 2010.I need your frank advice

Texas is good but the tuition fees can run you mad. It was okay during my days but i think its somewhere close to 450 dollars per semester hr now. You'll be looking at at least $9000 per semester. Don't believe the hype. The fees on the sites are only approximations. When you add up all the fees it gets that high.
The reason is that most texas schools still use the "PER CREDIT HOUR SYSTEM"
Most people limit their classes to 12hrs. (minimum you can take to satisfy your international status) because of this.
On the other hand, ULL  and other schools in louisiana have a flat rate. You'll probably pay a max of $5500 for 18hrs per semester in lafayette, louisiana when a similar school in texas will cost you well over $12000 if you dare take 18hrs.

Why am i emphasizing this:

You already have a degree. Apply as a Post bac. student. This means you will indicate on your application that you already have a degree. As a result you will (if admitted) be given at least a sophomore status. This means you'll only need about 2-3 yrs to complete your degree. You don't need spending more time and money than you need to. THIS ADVICE IS REALLY ONLY VALID IF YOU INTEND TO GO TO SCHOOL BECAUSE I"VE REALIZED THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT MOTIVES HAVE STARTED POSTING ON THIS THREAD. MOST PEOPLE WHO GET REJECTED VISAS USUALLY HAVE NO BUSINESS AT THE EMBASSY BECAUSE THEY JUST WANT TO USE THE F-1 VISA AS A MEANS TO ENTER YANKEE
If you have more questions throw it up. My fingers are getting tired at the moment. Grin

Hanhan, you "f" up ooo.  kidding.
Y didn't you go to my ex school . UofH. cougar for life.
I'm guessing that's the clear lake campus abi? Univ of Houston, Clear lake?

Trust me, you don't need any encouragement. Nigerians are so many in Houston that they'll irritate you after a while. Just go to sugarland or southwest and you go tire. There's a huge Nigerian students association at UH as well as all the other Texas schools. I'm not sure about the clear lake campus though
If you need info about living in houston, hit me up.

@^ gbemxy. My candid advice to you is that if u have d opportunity to start all over again, pls do.Thats wat i plan to do cos i had to abandon my HND to pursue studying abroad.Let me ask you one question:Can u gain employment in Oil coys with your 9ja cert.?can u work anywhere else in any part of the world with that CERTIFICATE?U r only or will only be limited to working in this country. On the other hand, picture urself as a University of Texas graduate-getting offers from facebook, sunsystems, cisco, microsoft, chevron etc.- how will u feel knowing dat u can present your certificate anywhere in d world. If na me be u,I go start ooooooo after all my elder brother did so n he told me he's not regretting.
My word,I have spoken

I just saw this post. While i'm not trying to discourage you from studying abroad, why would you "abandon" your HND. I hope what you mean is that you have it as a backup. There is no guarantee on a USA visa. Make sure you still have the ability to return to your HND program because you never know. Never abandon CERTAINTY for UNCERTAINTY

Nice Topic, i have been following this thread for long but even though i have never replied, i dont miss a day wihout reading what you guys write ere. I already have my admission from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, not after long weeks of gettin their i-20 though,  My cuzin in Chicago helped me pay my SEVIS fee on the 30th of JUly and i had already booked my appointment for 3rd of August ere in Abuja, that day was just a miracle for me, anybody who appeared at Abuja embassy can testify to that white guy on counter 6, it was just a miracle how i escaped him, I still keep thanking GOD for dat,  cos he was meant to interview but i still dont know what took him off his seat and someone else counter 9 had to call me to interview me,  the normal shaking was there but i had to adjust myself fast,  he asked for my i-20, asked why i chose the school, wat i have been doin since 2002 that i finished my o level, asked of what my dad does and again asked why i chose the school. he didnt even ask for my SAT. When he asked for my SEVIS receipt, i told him it was still under processin and he checked,  he now gave me a letter that i can come back any tuesday or thursday 7:30am when the receipt is ready, Am already thanking God cos i know i have scaled through, My friend went through same stage b4 he got his, they didnt even ask any question when he went back to show the SEVIS receipt, they just gave him the green ticket to go pick up his visa in wuse II,  Am sure mine wont be different, cos Yankee is all am thinkin and talkin bout now lol,  This topic has really helped me and given me lots of confidence b4 my interview, Thanks to every contributor, Will surely come back again to share my good news when i finally have the Visa on my passport, Am very very very hopefully and prayerful,  Wish everyone all da best,  Long Live Nigeria, Long Live United States Of America, My dream land,

Pls, are there nigerians in Hawaii? I applied to hawaii pacific university simply because it's easier to get into. My problem now is that the boarding fee is very high, imagine paying $12,000 every session. I also want to know if the racial discrimination in Hawai is stringent.

Nice comments out here. Congrats to Tboy and Smile11. I'm happy for y'all.

I do have a question though : What if you've been admitted as a student, and you're sponsoring yourself i.e. you're paying the tuition by yourself, no parents or relatives whatsoever involved, does it look wise to go to the embassy with your bank statement bearing your name? If yes, do you by chance think it'll pose any problem in the consular believing that you can't sponsor your own education by yourself?

Given that by luck you may not be questioned by the consular for documents relating to your sponsorship/finance -- my second question is, how much minimum should appear on the statement as the account balance to prove you can afford your studies?

This is urgent!

@TheSeeker
It depends on your package. If you r the only sponsoring urself they WILL ask for your source of funding, the kind of job u do and that will determine hw reasonable she might be.If for instance your annual income is $25k and after all expenses u r left with one third of it as your savings, certainly one third of your annual income is not upto the annual tuition+fees of average yanky schools.
Alternatively,u can present a sponsor's statement alongside urs to prove to them that u will be supporting urself and so will your sponsor's.I guess others in the house will have something to contribute. That's my own 5cents.My word u have, I have spoken  Wink

Thanks a lot. I'm actually asking for a very close friend. He's got about #1.2M in his account, and still has a business that can fetch him between #100K-#200K monthly. However, I don't think he has any sponsor. But if it's mandatory he provides a sponsor, will it make any difference if his last name is different from the sponsor's? The school he's attending is about $3,000 per semester. @Nethacker & all, what's your view on this?
